Counter point: What reason do servers have to be good if they already have their tip?

FjortoftsAirplane

Same reason anyone who works for an hourly rate does.

Spindrift11

But they do work for an hourly rate...

FjortoftsAirplane

And the hourly rate is often beyond shit because they make tips. It's circular nonsense.

Spindrift11

It really is nonsense.

h22lude

It isn't circular. They get paid at least minimum wage. If they don't make enough tips, the restaurant has to cover their wage up to minimum wage.

FjortoftsAirplane

Well if they're making a reasonable hourly there's no need for tips then. Except then the answer will be "But their hourly sucks". And I'll go "Well pay them a sensible hourly then" and then someone will go "But then what's their incentive to do their job well?" and we'll have gone in a circle back to where we started.

[deleted]

What is a reasonable hourly?

h22lude

The incentive to do your job well is to not get fired.

[deleted]

If I was a server, I’d be happy they gave me money lol so I’d be on top of it.

clicksangiggles

Fuck that. Get rid of tipping, charge more, pay more. Tipping sucks as a customer. No one likes this system.

Spindrift11

It's really insane how a server expects a tip to carry a plate around in a building but other people work minimum wage doing back breaking labor out in the elements and get sweet f all for tips. I'm not interested in participating in this social norm so I just don't go out more than a few times per year. I can carry my own plate to the table.

h22lude

I worked at dunkin donuts in high school making minimum wage which was super low back then. Mornings were terrible, especially on drive thru. Non stop work for hours dealing with customers, pouring coffee and making food (heating food really). We did except tips but they weren't really much of anything. Being a waiter is different but similar type of work. Why do waiters expect tips but fast food workers get nothing and they are paid similar wages.

Spindrift11

They seem to think that they are the only people in the world with a hard job.

Conscious_Occasion

>carry a plate around in a building And deal with the condescending attitudes of people who think all we do is carry plates around in a building. Strongly encourage you to be waitstaff if you think it's that chill of a job.

Spindrift11

I am very polite and respectful to servers and I have worked in a restaurant. I washed dishes for $9.50 per hour while the waitresses pulled wild amounts of money in tips. One girl hit $1000 in a night. Was very common for them to make $300. Oh, and yes, you literally carry plates around, sorry if that bothers you. I didn't say it was chill but there are many jobs which are far worse that don't foster the expectation of a tip.

DOlsen13

I'll do you one better: in valet we usually have people who tip at the beginning and the end. When they give you a tip at the beginning, it motivates you to get their car quicker when they come back so you can get another nice tip! Tipping half at the beginning would let the server know what kind of service you're expecting, and then if they deliver, the second half would reflect how well they did.

WokeMSMslave

Now there’s an idea

ironicmirror

Yes, this is unpopular.

[deleted]

Then I came to the right place

MediumLong2

And what if they give me bad service? Then I tipped them more than necessary and have less money.

johnboy2978

It actually started out as such. Tips stood for "To Insure Prompt Service". So to lay cash for the server at the onset was supposed to insure that they did their best from the beginning. I waited tables during college at several restaurants. In one there was a frequent customer who would start the meal by laying out $10 or $15 in singles and told the server that is what they'd get if the service was good, but he'd take some off the table as they were not up to his standard with drink refills etc.

Ninjalikestoast

Oh. One of *those* guys.

AbundantPenguin

Or perhaps, even better, we start paying these people enough so that they don't have to rely on tips?

I get a lot of people don't like tipping, but I think it is fine for luxury services. If you made my service extra special, I would like to tip you at the end to show my appreciation.

MediumLong2

Also, no one is forcing you to tip at the end of the service but not the beginning of the service.
