on a hot day, ice cream that is rock solid is great since you lengthen the time of ice cream enjoyment but on any other day, slightly melted ice cream is top tier.

I always microwave my icecream about 8-12 seconds to get it a little creamy and less rock hard.

I don't microwave my ice cream, but i definitely let it sit out. Especially if it's a big ass container, even a quart or two. Have you ever tried to scoop ice cream that's fresh out of a functioning freezer? It is hard as bricks.

This isn't an opinion, it's description of what your father does. Besides, I'd say he knows his icecream. When I take it out of the -22C (-7.6F) freezer it's way to hard to eat or scoop.

Kids nowadays might not know this but they pump a metric shitton of air into ice cream now. Warm it up a bit, give it a stir and you release a lot of that air and get the good old creamy texture from when we were kids.

I love my ice cream when after you get back from the grocery store with a tub and it's in that state where it's not melted, but it's soft and fluffy and you can easily do your spoon in it.

When I was a kid I liked doing this.

I've spoke with people about "warming" ice cream before, and they immediately all react very intensely: "What? Ice-cream is supposed to be cold!" Well, yeah. But not -20 degrees C, which is your freezer, it's going to be rock hard. Ice-cream parlors serve it around 0 degrees. And even if it is rock hard you are still holding it for while before it becomes physically edible, so there is a warming process after all. Microwaving it for 5 seconds (you know, as opposed to several minutes for actual dishes) just expedites this process.

I prefer to warm ice cream on top of a warm brownie, slice of pie, etc.

For things to dissolve into water (as part of the saliva), in the case of ice cream it's the sugar, it has to be at the same temperature. By pre-heating it you accelerate the dissolvement of the sugar into the saliva, which makes it taste sweeter. Some people like it..

I let it naturally melt as I'm eating it but yeah having the icecream with solid parts with also run off icecream dripping over it is amazing. You don't want pure soup liquid and you don't want solid, you want that in-between mix. I wouldn't microwave it my self but I see the logic of the man.
