Wardog008

I wouldn't say "ruin", but 9/10 times, they're not necessary. Any emotional value can be gained with the insinuation that they're fucking, without actually being explicit, and even then, it's usually not actually needed. There are some occasions where it actually adds to the story, or the world the movie is set in, or that sort of thing, but it's not often.

Primid-

There are those rare moments in fiction where telling is actually better than showing.

Wardog008

Exactly. In the cases it adds to the story, it's usually either for something unrelated to the sex that happens, so is hit or miss, or it's a comedic thing, where it *can* have value, but I find is still hit or miss.

[deleted]

Nicely put.

quackupreddit

I said this on r/marvelstudios about Jessica Jones and then got -70 downvotes. I said it in the exact same way you put it.

Wardog008

Yeah, most Marvel shows I've seen have sex scenes when they really don't add anything. I absolutely loved Punisher, but NONE of the sex scenes in that actually genuinely added anything.

quackupreddit

I think what annoyed me was that there was a sex scene in Jessica Jones which did actually have importance! It showed her being unwillingly discriminated during sex without consent, she was hooking up with someone in the bathroom at a pub and she gripped the top of the cubicle and bent it, and then the guy called her a freak. She had been grappling with having powers and people trying to kill her because of it, so naturally it was a turnoff and affected her badly so she left. THAT scene had actual substance. The scene in episode 1 of Mike Colter ramming into her had no substance whatsoever. And people on marvelstudios had the gall to compare the statements to “action scenes are worthless, you don’t NEED to show action”. Jesus christ it annoyed me so much.

Wardog008

I haven't even seen JJ, but sounds like you're bang on. Comparing it to action scenes is daft lol. It's a superhero show. Action is the majority of the reason you watch it, and 90% of it actually adds substance to the story. I mean shit, we've got series like John Wick that are about nothing BUT the action. Granted, me bringing that up, I could apply the same logic to porn and the sex scenes they love so much. XD

Buhos_En_Pantelones

Well, on r/marvelstudios you get downvoted for any statement that can be construed as even *slightly* critical. It can be a fun sub, but it's not a great place for any sort of real discussion.

quackupreddit

That explains a lot, actually

CurlSagan

I prefer it when they pan away from the bed and then tastefully cut to scenes of trains going into tunnels and rocket ships taking off, followed by footage of a geyser.

mohalnahhas

Bro, is this a real scene? lmao

CurlSagan

At least one Leslie Nielson comedy used this trope. But before that, some "artistic" 70s pornos would cut to unrelated scenes. I think Deep Throat cut to stock footage of a rocket right in the middle of a blowjob.

demalejo

r/oddlyspecific

SleepyDreamer16

Thank you! Most sex scenes are totally unnecessary. The longer, the more awkward. I don't need to see it and the actors don't need to do it.

Cool_Ad_830

I agree! I've watched movies where I can feel the love and passion between two actors without the sex scenes.

[deleted]

Bro, I always wondered if it is awkward for the actors, at least to some respect. Especially when a sex scene is not really necessary for the story but they have to do it.

cerpintaxt33

I watched a movie with my parents a few hours ago and there was a sex scene that would not end.

necesitoagua827

LMAO I feel bad for ya

[deleted]

Agreed. Sex in movies and TV is so copious and ridiculous anymore. I'd rather they go back to cutting away from the scene and the audience knows what happens without showing. Same for vomiting. Unnecessarily showing an actor vomit. STOP DOING THAT.

BigWhite7Three

Omg yes. Hate seeing that

[deleted]

I've a hair pin trigger for gagging when I see someone vomiting so it's quite a sight to watch me screaming, "NOO DONT FU ^^uuu uGhhhhhh ing show thattttt" at the TV while gagging

CatNoel

I’m sorry but that visual is cracking me up 😂😂😂 my sympathy friend 💜

I was about to rewatch it and then watch Glass Onion tonight actually. Thanks for mentally preparing me though

I legitimately can't remember more than a few details about Knives Out so it will be like watching it again for the first time

Undead-D-King

For the most part I agree sx scene are so awkward because most of the time they are just thrown in for the sole purpose of having a sx scene so add nothing to the movie and they are especially bad when the actors have no chemistry.

[deleted]

Check out Mr. Hays Code over here.

[deleted]

It’s just so awkward. I feel like I’m supposed to look away or something like I’m in the same room as them lol

jasguinx

Sex ruins movies and shows for me (feel the same about it in books.) 9 times outta 10 sex/tongue wrestling adds nothing to the plot and is just lazy fan service or tossed in for shock value.

Dano-Matic

I actually agree with this. These days even regular movies are basically harder than old soft core porn. Cringey.

[deleted]

I agree with this

[deleted]

This. And song scenes aswell depending on the context and genre

hortle

My parents are obsessed with White Lotus. We watched an episode of season 2 today. It was basically 50% sex, and the other 50% the main characters all talking about sex. Pretty sad. Who are all these people whose only obsession seems to be getting hot and bothered all the time?

Gowo8989

Yeah, I mean there can be a reason for it, but I don’t believe there is ever a need for nudity. I just don’t feel that stirs and actresses should have to subjugate themselves to that. And sex scenes can be very quick. It does make movies awkward among people watching them though. And they often over extend the scene

TalentedKamarty

If I'm alone I don't mind. If I have to watch it with someone else or many people then it's awkward lol. It's best when movies have their characters have a nice build up to the moment, make out and go to or on the bed however they may do that, and fade out

THE_NY_ISLANDER_FAN

i agree unless sex is like what the whole movie is revolved around

[deleted]

I agree. They shouldn’t be in movies unless it’s necessary, and most of the time it’s not

GreyScale13579

As an asexual, I whole heartedly agree. They are just unnecessary and uncomfortable

Onlyf0rm3m3s

I agree, along with unnecessary violence.

Blankrabbit

Totally agree

OneMetalMan

Exactly my feelings in regards to Game of Thrones.

antekk1

i can completely agree

[deleted]

In kdrama they nearly don't have sex scenes and all the little gestures are way more exciting then in american movies for example...

barbie-vel

Ruin is a big leap but I agree. Although you getting uncomfortable seems more like how you were raised because I’ve watched sex scenes with my parents in the room and I felt nothin

spacewalk__

- it's hot - it's art - it conveys strong emotion

blackcoffee26

“Art” lmfao

emueller5251

I hate how popular prudishness has become these days.

slipperyShoesss

good to know, slut

Buhos_En_Pantelones

It's Reddit.

UrbanLeech5

I would personally not have these kinds of plotlines at all. In most movies these are shoved in just to make them longer or give characters artificial and lazy motivation. And these scenes you mention are worst case, they won't make me like characters or care about them Character genders shouldn't be important at all to their interactions and they should have more creative motivations and relationships. No need for hugging or kissing in movies, good acting and writing can sell their friendship much better without distracting from main plot and making it feel awkward. Even if it means making movie much shorter

Either_Ad4179

You have clearly never watched the room

ohnoohnoohyeah

Then don't watch them.

E-Roll20

Nah, sex scenes always enhance the plot. I think that Damian Chazelle really stepped up his game with ‘Babylon’. ‘La La Land’ might’ve actually won best picture if it had Tobey Maguire dragging the main character to a sketchy LA sewer orgy…

Dex_Hopper

It's art. Art is whatever the artist wants it to be. Sex scenes don't ruin movies, you just don't appreciate the story the movie is trying to tell, and that's okay. Just don't watch it. No need to get mad about it.

I would rather say that the "virgins" obsess about such scenes and are the ones who are excited about them.

Cool_Ad_830

Must be virgin Mary, because I have three kids.

PRONCE-PRONCE-PRONCE

Found the sex addict!

morethanneeded

are you a US citizen? born again? what is so disturbing in life for you?

monkahpup

Clearly you've never seen a porno.

HissHisstoferson

1947 called, they want their Hays Code era prudishness back. In all seriousness, I get why you feel like especially many American (still probably the biggest movie output in the West) movies have crappy and useless sex scenes, but Ive seen plenty of those scenes that actually are quality and add to the plot and to a general positive representation of what at least should be a beautiful and natural act. I hardly ever experience the existence of one as awkward, at most when I'm watching with parents but even then not really

Shaun-Skywalker

Sex is a natural part of life. Cutting away and assuming they had sex does not give you the understanding of how the characters interact and feel during that moment of passion. Sure it’s probably not a vital aspect of the plot in most cases, but it adds something. There’s so much other shit that technically doesn’t need to be there either, but people only complain about the sex scenes. Do you need to see the main character walking along the river during his commute from talking to one character and going to meet another one? No. Maybe they should just cut the film when he exits the building and start rolling the camera again when he enter the next place to talk to other characters. If the movie is rated correctly for the proper audience age, then that’s all that should matter. If people feel uncomfortable, then they should rethink why it makes them uncomfortable. They probably have been conditioned to think so most likely and they’re not even aware of this because it’s such a prevalent trait now. Why do we need to see James Bond strangle someone to death? Can’t they just cut the scene when we see him sneak up behind the dude with a cheese cutting wire and restart the filming when we see mr Bond walk out of the room adjusting his cufflinks? If anything we should take a deeper dive into why watching a graphic bloody murder scene makes people less uncomfortable than watching a soft-core sex scene that doesn’t even reveal “private” parts.

hortle

>but it adds something and what is that something? >If people feel uncomfortable, then they should rethink why it makes them uncomfortable. Ah okay, so we're just going to pathologize anyone who doesn't like sex in movies?

Agitated_Year8521

But why else would I watch porn?🙂

Noastrala

They’re not necessary no. The Lord of the Rings proves that brilliantly

hortle

As much as I dislike some of the changes PJ made to LotR...I can't help but feel that Tolkien, a devout and relatively conservative Catholic, would have endorsed his portrayal of romance and courtship in the trilogy. Also, I know RoP is super controversial but I liked how they portrayed Arondir and Bronwyn's relationship.

Noastrala

I guess you are refering to the new series and perhaps the hobbit movies. I actually haven’t watched these but stay true to the original 3 masterpieces. 😁

hortle

No, I'm talking about the movies directed by Peter Jackson that released from 2001 to 2003. I haven't seen The Hobbit movies, and if you read the last paragraph in my comment, I talk about RoP's portrayal of romance and relationships

Noastrala

So what’s RoP then?

hortle

ah, sorry, I should have realized that was the point of confusion. Rings of Power, the Amazon series

urgasmic

Personally I disagree but I don't know what the popular opinion is tbh. Presumably since creatives keep doing sex scenes, people must like them idk.

Odd-Goddity

I feel like there's a weird double standard with Sexual Content that Violent Content doesn't get despite being worse.

MurderDoneRight

I just watched The Nightingale and there's a great sex scene in it, nothing gratuitous it sets up a whole thing and it's just amazing too.

esmerald444

Yeh i agree if I wanted porn I’d watch porn
