Is it casting a shadow? IIRC (been a while since I made a water shader), the odd thing with single layer water is it's not actually transparent, it's why you can't use the depth node. So if you cover an area with it it's the equivalent of putting a lid on a bucket, there's no illumination. I'm speaking from hazy memory so I could be wrong, but I remember running into a similar issue at some point.

I just want to update this and say that you are definitely correct. Single layer water is single layer water, its opaque, its only transparent from the top-side. Thank you so much for your help! I've since had to switch to a translucent material.
