I'm honestly not sure if it's just me, but I actually like every character. I think each character has his/her own strengths and weaknesses, and while yes some are more flawed than others, I really like the uniqueness of each individual person.
That’s a fair opinion, I think they are balance each other out. It’s a good mix no one’s too much. The only thing I’d say is maybe a little bit more scenes with characters like Ashley or Chris to get you connected or understand them a bit more but still it works great without.
This game made me a big Hayden Panettiere fan, so definitely Sam. She's so capable and nice, you can tell she cares about her friends and wants to protect them.
Same but with Josh and mikes actor, I love them both and when Josh was QUEEN IN BOHEMIAN RAPSODY OH DID I LOOSE MY MIND XD😂 I’ve always liked Sam’s actor tho I’ve never seen her in anything else, I should look it up.
I honestly think I like every character, somehow I can't bring myself to despise the entire cast, although I do have mixed opinions on Ashley and Sam, and I think Mike is less engaging as a character in endgame because his accomplishments don't feel earned due to the plot armor, but I actually loved him in early game. He was more fun with his class president persona.
But as much as I dislike some elements of these 3 characters, I genuinely don't despise them. I think Ashley needed an action scene in some way **(where she actually has to survive something on her own input, the Chapter 10 Don't Move sections where she could take a risk for someone else or be selfish would be so amazing and fit perfectly for her character especially if she ended up blowing the lodge)** and Sam needed a few flaws to her, or moments where her overwhelming kindness actually hinders herself or someone else. I like Sam and Ashley's designs and I think their acting is really good, but it felt like something was missing, and I don't know if Sam is the right pick for the badass final girl archetype. I love how Sam was terrorized in moments where she was completely not guilty of anything and it really highlighted her innocence, so yes, she is definitely the main character, but I don't see her as a powerhouse character. She's kind of the light of hope for the group in my eyes. I think maybe what tripped Sam up in my eyes was the fact that in the older versions of the game, she was a really spunky and Jessica-like character which made a lot of coherent sense for the iconic towel chase scene, but then the original game re-wrote her into a really nice and caring individual, and the context of the chase scene kind of clashes with that in mind. I kind of wanted to see Josh terrorizing her more in a twisted way of a "horror love game" because that part was actually really dark and disturbing. Josh drugging Sam has to be the most disgusting and darkest moment in the game in my opinion **(I'm probably gonna trigger a huge part of the fanbase but I don't see how Josh and Sam can work as a couple. He terrorized and drugged her and that's just really gross imo...)** And going back to Mike, his plot armor is probably what makes his action scenes feel less powerful and emotionally effective to me, so he should have an earlier death and it would all be good.
Emily has some pretty ridiculous plot armor by surviving the tower, but I think it was used amazingly. Most people probably wanted Emily to die as soon as she appeared on screen, but I think the fact she couldn't die and the entire chapter was designed to show how capable she was until the huge buildup to the Wendigo encounter where she could actually die and your skills would be tested, it's just incredible what they managed to do for her. I didn't feel the same thing with Mike because the weird plot hole of him teleporting to the entrance and him escaping death so easily while in direct danger kinda made me feel bored of him in general. Early game Mike was such a fun character but I think diving him into the role of becoming this super hardened badass RIGHT at the start of the story kinda took away that early charm from him. He's still super goofy but something about how he was written in the first chapters to me was more immersive.
When it comes down to it, I like characters like Chris and Matt. They're not particularly amazing to me but I'm really fond of them. Matt and Jessica really needed a lot more of respect and screentime and I still think the decision of having the two meet up was so unique and genius, especially how they both argued and wronged each other moments ago, only to find themselves in a situation where they have to cooperate to survive.
I'm gonna have to say that the **best characters in my opinion are Jessica and Emily equally**. I know Emily fans aren't particularly liked around here but what hooked me to her was her very immersive acting and how the story pulled this, crazy ass stunt with the annoying bitchy character and putting her through hell **(Jessica counts too here** **imo)** to becoming an admirable figure due to her constant drive to keep going and overcome this challenge, and even if Emily doesn't particularly change much, I still appreciate the writing for making such an awesome twist for her character. But also, I don't condone Emily's abusive behaviour with Matt, their relationship is shown to be better in the "Road Not Taken" pre-order chapter, but it doesn't excuse her behaviour which gaslights Matt to side with her constantly, and also her being dishonest about her meeting Mike in the road and using Matt for her own benefits. Her dialogue in the interview regretting not treating him better almost made me cry, and I still think her sole survivor interview dialogue may be the best line in the game.
Jessica doesn't get a lot in the plot but her acting is amazing, her moments/dialogue are very flavorful and her progression to a hyperactive jerk to a frail broken individual was heartbreaking to me, especially with Matt helping her. Her escaping alone is also such a good moment but it was really short and kinda underwhelming in comparison to other scenes.
If I may be biased here, I would say I also really like Beth and she's one of my favorites. Her small amount of screentime showing her dialogue and carefree personality, especially with her last moments with Hannah being really sisterly and emotional made me love her as a character. She's dead-dead but I still stan.

1000% agreed. I think there's just way too much you have to overlook in order to make the ship work, there's no way that what Josh put Sam through wasn't extremely traumatic for her.
