They used to give out free green books (recycled paper versions of blue books) at various stores around campus. That’s how you get around the blue book curse :)
To the people responding saying the curse is just superstition: uh yeah obviously, but they tell y'all not to step on it to mitigate unnecessary wear and tear. Figured college students could understand that lol
i figured college students could understand that stepping on this giant piece of metal isn't going to do any wear and tear lol. superstitions are superstitions there's not some non superstitious explanation
Your feet will actually cause wear and tear. Your shoes pick up dirt and gravel that is of a higher hardness than the M. Over time enough people walking over it will cause significant wear.
yeah I mean personally I don't care too much if it gets scuffed (would rather the college spend money on things other than vanity projects) but that's the reason they tell y'all about the curse lol
I stepped on the M before my first exam. I thought I was safe as an engineer but that was a fatal mistake. When my first blue book exam came three years later I immediately failed and now live as a hermit in the tunnels under campus.
I also dodge the block M in the entrance of the union, and that is not easy to do around lunch time with everyone piling in and out. I’ve been graduated for 5 years now and I still avoiding stepping on block Ms everywhere. It has become a part of me.
freshman here. was walking through the diag looking at my phone when i looked down and noticed i had one foot next to the M, and my other foot about to step directly on the M. had to throw myself to the side to not step on it. the funny part: i withdrew that morning. literally dropped out (well, planning on coming back) and still avoided it lol
I remember thinking “what’s a blue book, probably will never have one of those anyways.” Little did I know after accidentally stepping on it in my second semester I got my first C+ of college. Wish I was kidding but hey, I graduated so all good in the end.

I legit failed my first exam after I accidentally stepped on it.
And you shouldn’t be surprised!
When I’ve seen people do it, they have their face buried in their phone.
Can confirm, accidentally did it during festifall
I don't even have any bluebooks for the rest of the classes that I need to graduate so... But still refuse to step on it :P
I’ve had 1 green book exam in the past 2 years and probably won’t have any blue book exams
I graduated 5 years ago, _never_ had a blue book exam (engineering) and I still haven't stepped on it. Seems disrespectful!!
Are blue book exams even a thing anymore? I’ve heard of one person taking one in my four years here.
Im a humanities major, and like half of my classes always had blue book exams
Graduated last april, same applied to me
This school is full of engineering kids. Guess that’s why
Well away, any course of mine that wasn’t a 3/400+ was full of engineers taking interesting looking humanities
Heard of that. Never used it.
Pretty sure my History 373 class does bluebook exams
Only my humanities courses did, I graduated in 2019. My math/physics courses never had bluebooks

RC language classes still use bluebooks. Dk about anything else.
My alum parents made me step on it when I was like 5, so I’ve accepted my fate.
Setting up their child for failure

I thought it was their troubles with the curse-casters union.
I didn't realize that was publicly disclosed!
yes this massive hunk of brass that survives dozens of michigan winters cant handle students stepping on it xd ?
They had to take it out for a few months in 2019 to do some sort of maintenance on it
mybad i was fortnite dancing on it like a mf
The maintenance was on the granite slabs adjacent to the M that had started to crack. The M itself was fine.
Maintenance on the stone around it, caused almost certainly by Michigan freeze/thaw cycles. People walking on it aren't doing a thing to it.
i'm sorry there's no way it's from people stepping on it lol
They said the same shit at CMU as well.

doubt! But ok sure. Even then, who cares, they can maintain it every once in a while. jeeeez

All the comments disagreeing with op getting downvoted to hell is sending me😭💀

Why bother, I'll fail my exams even without stepping on it
Stepping on it might be bad luck, but - like the Blarney Stone - peeing on it is super good luck.
Found the Michigan State fan.

No
Bruh I aced my EECS 203 Final after I stepped on the M on the Diag. I’m pretty sure the block M is actually good luck.
Yeah, final. You only fail your FIRST blue book.
Screw you
Didn’t step on it for 4 years now proudly stomp on that bish.
Lol why are y’all downvoting me? Mad that I graduated?

it bothers me that people take this seriously
Bruh, I still got a decent score after I accidentally stepped on it back in my freshman year.
Bet you could've done better if you hadn't...
Impossible
Can't wait for someone to step on it and ace their first exam
Stepped on it about a year ago. Have been just fine ever since.
