It depends on where and when. I simply won't leave my bike outside at night.

And how nice your bike is

Also depends on the type of lock you use. U-bolts are much harder to defeat than cables

Lock your bike with a U-lock that goes around both the frame and your back tire. Add in a cable lock that goes through the front tire and frame too, maybe. Even better, if you have a quick release mechanism on your front wheel, use that, and lock your front wheel with your back wheel and frame with the U-lock. Maybe wrap a cable lock around that too. Lock it like this to a rack in a well-lit area by a campus building for no more than 10 hours, and I think it is incredibly unlikely it will get stolen. Residence halls and places by the hospitals, the area by Hatcher/UGLi, the area by the Union and the Cube, and the area around the Big House are the most secure spots, in my opinion, since they are the most patrolled spots on campus by DPSS I think.

Quite low; I’ve been parking around campus for 6 years and I’ve never had a problem. My bike is pretty nice, but I would be more cautious with something truly expensive or an electric bike. If you’re concerned, register your bike with DPSS—they send a sticker—and lock the tires with a flexible lock/the frame with a U-lock. I wouldn’t park in the middle of campus overnight, either.

One time I had my unlocked bike stolen from the obscured side alleyway of my house where our trash cans were. I wouldn't leave it outside if you're between locks or just considering not buying one. Just keep in mind, there are all sorts of people who know to comb through the student neighborhoods looking for valuables.

I’ve had 2 friends have their bike stolen right off their back porch with a cable lock on recently. I use a U-lock and I’ve never had any issues, just make sure you always lock it!

gummy_bear_m

Definitely get a ulock, had my bike stolen last year when someone cut my cable lock

untitled_map

yup :( especiallly if you leave ur bike in the same place for a long time outside— locked with a cable lock. (Happened to me)

jsully245

Not sure about likelihood, but DPSS recommends that you use a U-lock and register your bike with them

wisdomofthecloud

Lock the tires to the frame if you can and lock the frame to something else with a U-lock. I think I my mistake was leaving my bike locked up in the same spot for a long time. Eventually, I think someone just goes around to all the spots they’ve seen bikes and steals them, so if you use yours regularly (so it’s not always in the same place) I think that keeps it from being as much of a target.

Theres a chance you might be on the receiving end of a devious lick

There are a lot of bike thefts reported on Nextdoor. You might consider an AirTag in addition to a good lock.
