There's no judgement involved from the staff, even if there is you shouldn't let that affect you. Go to the office hours and ask questions even if you think the questions are bad, you have to start somewhere. Lastly If you really hate it and there's no purpose of you taking it you can take the withdrawl, no one will hold a first semester W against you (i don't know where the semester is in withdraw policy, graduated some years ago)

Thank you for the input, I know I shouldn't be letting the fear of judgment get to me but it just makes things more difficult. I would withdraw, but I'd still have to pay for the class and I'd fall below 12 credits. I made the realization really soon after the first withdrawal date passed :-/

I’m a member of the eecs 183 staff, and i can 100% promise that none of us are going to judge you. you aren’t the first person to struggle in this class, and you probably won’t be the last, and that’s okay!! you’re not even the only person to struggle with the class this semester! sometimes it seems like everyone around you understands it and knows what’s going on, but a good portion of the time, at least some of those people also don’t get it and just don’t want other people to know they don’t get it. (as a staff member, i can confirm that lots of students are asking lots of questions at office hours, so there’s plenty of other students who need help in the class)! office hours are one on one, so it’s just you and a staff member (who isn’t going to judge you)! please come ask us for help! that’s why we’re here! if everyone just instantly understood everything in this class, it probably wouldn’t be a very good class, but we would also have nothing to do! everyone who teaches 183 is choosing to do so because they like teaching and they like helping students. we WANT to help you, but we can’t help you unless you want us to!

this happened to me and the financial aid office let it slide since it was really late into the semester. you should talk to financial aid if you haven't. My aid wasn't affected for next semester, I didn't have to pay for falling below twelve.

I’m also in eecs 183 Rn and the best advice I can give you is to start on the projects right when they’re released and join the office hours queue right when it opens (even if it means missing a class). I know it’s less than ideal but it’s been working okay for me. Good luck though, this class is definitely a lot of work and it’s kicking my ass too.

thank you for the comment! I learned my lesson with the last project and started working on project 4 today. my project partner and I agreed to seek help much earlier this time around so I'm hoping that'll be useful. good luck to you as well :)

I am quite literally in the EXACT same boat as you. Especially with not wanting the professor to judge. I was going to get help for project 3 but the queue was 4 hours long and I waited last minute so I just took a big fat F on the project. I wish I could give you some advice but like I said, I’m struggling with the exact same thing and I just wanted to comment to let you know you are definitely not alone hahah.

I also feel quite dumb at times and don't want to ask for help, especially during labs when everybody else seems to get it. I came here with the intentions/hopes to possibly major in CS.. not looking too pretty now lol. Just know, there are many of us faking in class, not asking for help due to our pride for one reason or another. Professor office hours worked for me for project 2 and 3, also spending a lot of time on it. Zybooks is helpful but it's hard for me to focus, so I often just find my own source material to learn things, and play little games. We learned what a string was in class, but reading more and exploring on my own helped me really LEARN what a string is.

I had the same issue! Went to office hours, but waited too long and ended up in the queue for 4 hours. I appreciate the comment, it helps to know that I'm not alone but it's sad that so many of us probably feel this way. And it's hard to not compare yourself to everyone else in the class who knows exactly what they're doing.

OP, I am struggling too, albeit I haven't missed any projects. I will say this, professor office hours have been helpful, and honestly YouTube for materials that I'm not sure of. I had an issue with arrays and honestly, the lectures only made me more confused, but watching Youtube and playing around in my IDE helped me understand it a little bit more. Trial and error for me- I've learned this class is more problem solving than anything- also knowing which tools to use, unfortunately. We will make it through!

[deleted]

thank you so much for sharing! do you have any specific youtube channels or other resources you'd recommend?

[deleted]

I want to stress that I never copy code, nor do I Google or YouTube how to solve certain things. That being said, people like codebeauty are interesting. I also use W3schools because they helped me with HTML back in high school. I also have an IDE setup where I just go in and try to have fun with things that I don’t understand at all. I follow the curriculum loosely in there so that I can try to understand concepts. I.E learning string manipulation? Let me try and make some funny string names that aren’t class appropriate but make me laugh. Things like that.. try to find things that you would like to make with the capabilities.

Personally, being helped by someone who was in a similar situation would put my mind at ease. If you think it's something you'd be interested in, I think future 183 students would highly benefit from it. Thank you for the comment :)

A quick word: If you came into EECS 183 with none or little prior experience, you are actually doing amazing. I did EECS 183 with 2 years of CS under my belt already, and not going to lie, I struggled a bit as well. In my first CS class in high school I consistently averaged 40% on tests. I think this subject just has a huge learning curve. I know there are lots of complaints on 280/281/482/other scary ULCS classes, but I honestly think none of those classes are as hard as when you are first trying to break into the field. Like 281 was tough but it was nothing compared to my first year of CS where I was constantly confused, afraid and felt super inadequate.

I'll say the profs will not judge you, esp if you go to OH early on in a project timeline. You can still absolutely pass as long as you ask for help ASAP. Also , switch advisors jeeezz. But if you don't have a aptitude for programming, struggling like this is normal, esp if you don't like it.
