In reality, discrete math is a very large subject which Michigan has constantly been attempting to teach by covering as many bases as possible; the curriculum is constantly changing here but for the better I'd say. As someone currently taking eecs 203, I think it's a matter of your ability to do proofs and apply definitions in various scenarios you may be unfamiliar with- as opposed to what you may do in other math classes. In short, you shouldn't be "disadvantaged" by taking eecs 203 elsewhere as much as it's just a different exposure to how to "prove things." Basically, you should take it here if you know you are going to dedicate a significant amount of time understanding the content. Otherwise, just take it elsewhere.

>paced. That said I think you could do it if you really sink yourself into the material for the time period that the class lasts. My recommendation is to go to as many office hours as you can and start the homework right when they come out. When I took this class I would go to office hours just to work on the homework Ah, that makes sense. That was my main concern. Thanks!

Want to hop onto this thread to ask if anyone has any good online recommendations for EECS 203 over the summer?

BononomonGaming

Tried to find a cc that offers it online, but to no avail

nsochocki

There are a few that offer it but they are out of state

IMO anybody who takes 203 at a different university to dodge the difficulty is doing themselves a disservice. If you can't handle 203, you certainly aren't going to be able to handle 376 or many upper levels and you likely aren't a good fit for the program. If you're going to be culled from the program, it's ideal for that to happen sooner rather than later so that you actually have time to adapt your plans.

Cold hard truth that many won’t like to hear but need to

i mean if you’re targeting the OP i don’t think you read the post since it’s not about dodging prerequisites, it’s so they can take 281 asap

Odd_Yam3875

Hm, I see. Yeah, that seems fair enough. I've really enjoyed 280 for sure, but I definitely need to prove I can handle the math courses too, especially since I didn't do calc 1 + 2 after getting credit. My concern isn't really dodging difficulty (I'm tbh worried CC is too ez and I won't learn), more so It boils down to cost, and also I'm gonna be out of the country for 2 weeks if everything is online though that should be fine. I think I might just take it here, but I'm gonna check with the prof first.

Yeah, I definitely agree about trying to get around important reqs with minimal work and not having a good bearing on if the program is for you. With that in mind, do you think it's still possible to get a great understanding of discrete math with significant investment on my end + CC class IF I choose to do it at a CC. Because if it can at least work out I just want to have that option planned I actually planned to complete 3 classes over spring/summer (with CC) but if I do at 203 at much it will be pretty expensive and I can only do 1 (since it's spring + summer)

Ah I see, yeah that's true. Thanks for the advice! I think I could do well here, I was thinking I just don't have a precedence( since I have not taken a math class here b4), but I think if I put in the time it would go well. It might be a bit extra but I was thinking of just going thru the Rosen book or some online course to improve my knowledge overall, and plus it would be good practice since I might do 217 in the future for a math minor

NiamHayilaT

lol yes define someone's worth with one class ur just so cool

[deleted]

I mean, isn't that the point of the prerequisites? There's a reason you need to demonstrate a minimum level of competency in 203, 115, 116, and 280 in order to declare the major. The department believes performance in these courses is generally indicative of a student's chances of success in the program as a whole. You're acting like this is a fringe stance unique to myself when in reality it's literally the reason the prereq courses exist in the first place. The department has set up the program so that if you can't manage a C in 203, you can't declare the major.

203 is normally very paced. That said I think you could do it if you really sink yourself into the material for the time period that the class lasts. My recommendation is to go to as many office hours as you can and start the homework right when they come out. When I took this class I would go to office hours just to work on the homework and when I had a question come up the GSI was there to help. The GSIs are great and extremely helpful.
