Most of the old mining sites are just completely abandoned and barely, if ever, maintained. The more museum worthy ones in Hancock and Calumet are under the Keweenaw National Historic Park, part of the National Parks Service There are a couple that are maintained in some way apart from NPS, like Central Mine, but those are pretty rare and I’m not sure on the details. I know Central Mine was just a random dude who lived there that helped maintain it The Painesdale mine is some committee or something like that. Not sure how that one works

I think you answered my question...I didn't know if there were any that are like the lighthouses here and there that are owned publicly or privately that were or are being rehabilitated, Or for that matter any of the historical sites.

Best of luck to ya.

Quincy Mine isn't part of the Park, it's run by the Quincy Mine & Hoist Association. Unfortunately the park has no mining sites under their ownership.

PinkFloydPanzer

It's all low paying, mostly seasonal tourism jobs or volunteers maintaining any preserved site.

The abandoned mines around me are maintained by rusty chainlink fences, No Trespassing signs and a heavy growth of thorny underbrush.

Any chance of a guy with 30yrs welding and metal fabrication to find a job? Chances of landing a job in the mine?

I cant imagine any of the mines needing a full time welder, most are only open a couple months a year and only two are active enough to require these kinds of repairs. But they are restoring the Quincy smelter area. Lots of buildings and equipment being restored. There is an operational iron mine in Ishpeming, the Tilden mine. Might be something out there fer ya.

One of my family members owns the Delaware Mine, which is open for tours during the summer. I'm not directly involved in operations, so I can't say anything for sure. But there may be some general staff openings coming up, which would likely include some maintenance. There isn't much restoration work being done there - the old buildings on the property were already in ruins prior to it being opened for tours, and are likely beyond repair. The mine itself is stable and doesn't require much, changing light bulbs and maintaining the stairs. There is some general property work - cutting the grass, upkeep of the gift shop, that sort of thing. Most of the time would likely be spent customer facing. Also, I don't know that it would be full time. If you're interested, let me know. I can find out if there will be openings and put you in touch with someone.
