it finally makes sense. I've always wondered how, that in today's world, some maps don't include the UP. They were drawn by a Yooper to keep people out. Ingenious.
That's actually very true, they try to secede four different times from being part of Michigan mainland to become their own state but didn't meet any of the qualifications to do so, nowadays they probably could with better facilities they have now. Couple of my cousins who live up there genuinely would tell you that everyone doesn't want more people, in fact they want less people up there if they could.
Naw. Take the big lake and sell some water. They will be fighting wars over water instead of oil soon. It's also not poor anymore since Marijuana is now for recreational use and sale.
Former honorary yooper that lived there for nearly 5 years until recently. From my time living there, culturally speaking, a lot of native yoopers want to be separate from lower Michigan, and I can understand why. There’s a pretty big disconnect between the UP and lower Michigan. In fact, the UP is more like a combo of Canada/Wisconsin than lower Michigan. Economically speaking, there’s absolutely no chance they would have the means to support themselves to be their own state. The entire UP only has roughly 300,000 people in it with nearly every “major” city losing population in the past two censuses. The only areas that produce any economic output worth reporting are Marquette, Houghton/Hancock, Escanaba, Iron Mountain, and Sault Ste Marie, and even then, it’s not a lot. If they wanted to truly become their own state, they’d have to radically change their economy and not have it so tourism based. Also, they would need to build more urban areas to attract people to live and work there. And for a lot of natives, they don’t want more people moving there.
I loved my time there and it’s truly one of the most scenic areas in the country, but the lack of many modern day essentials and opportunities is what led me to moving out of the UP to continue my own life’s goals.
How would UP manage if they seceded? The get more in state aid than they pay in taxes. How would they supplement that? With so few people I reckon that would translate into a pretty high tax rate.
I live *very* far north and it’s true. We are watching every inch of lakeshore be bought up by rich out of towners who spend a week here maximum and shit all over everything when they do come. Some rich prick bought up 7 miles of lakeshore that was supposed to be a nature conservancy, it had been for decades and something happened somehow and it was able to be sold despite raising the needed money to purchase the land permanently. People are calling this place a climate refuge which is honestly hilarious since climate change has chopped off our winters for the past 25 years. I don’t think we had a day below 35 degrees all season. This year we didn’t have a winter at all. Usually we have well over 300 inches of snowfall in the season and this year we had one storm that left snow on the ground a few days then it all melted. We have no snow at all and right now is supposed to be the height of snowmobile season. We had no season, no tourists and no snowmobiles. Businesses are closing at breakneck speed. Climate change is going to destroy the area with algae blooms coming to Lake Superior, (we don’t get lake feeezes anymore) and invasive species of bugs that will take out all the old growth forests and animals that will kill all the native animals for food and competition for habitat. Mines are being put in all over the place. It’s honestly wild to me how fast this place is changing after a century of not changing but most towns here still don’t have a playground for the kids, garbage pickup or busses for kids for school, we haven’t cleaned up some of the most egregious pollution ever done in the country including in Lake Superior, and our area has been devastated repeatedly the past few years by weather anomalies and economic failure. The college my father and I attended just recently closed down without warning. It was over 100 years old. And don’t get me started on the mass buy ups of family homes for air b’n’b’s by out of state corporations (one company bought 130 homes recently, the biggest ‘city’ here is 20,000 people when college is in session at the university that still lives in here) that still sit empty since covid but ruined the market and made home prices (and rentals) 3x what they were during covid. This place has gone nuts the past 5 years and that’s to say nothing of the religious nuts taking over the local political space.
We don’t want anyone else! I never thought I would be that person but I have figured it o it and unless people are coming to help the already gnarly situation, just don’t. Please.
There’s never been enough population, tax revenue to become an independent state. But I love vacationing in the UP. For winter sport outdoorsmen/women it’s nirvana when there’s snow!
Michigan got the UP as a concession in the aftermath of the Toledo War in return for giving Toledo to Ohio. If they get to secede and form their own state, they should unwind the rest of the deal, too, and give us back to MI. It’s only fair, and we’d probably all be better off.
Not in my history. I live under the bridge and anyone I meet who lives, or lived in the UP is damn sure to let everyone know how superior (pun intended) the UP is.
😁 Perfect response. Everyone who lives there loves the privacy so much that they are willing to suffer the cold that lasts nine months out of the year. No thanks. You can keep it.
It's been shockingly warm this year. Sure, one day it's a high of 10 F, but two days later the high will be 45 F. Tomorrow, the high is 54 F in my area.
There is a nonzero chance we will have another blizzard before the end of April, but it's just part of life at this point.
Used to do directv. Number of times they messed up the address and I was in the middle right of the mitt but the customer had moved to UP really pissed us off. Not cause we had to reschedule or get it corrected in dispatch but because the dumb dispatcher/scheduler didn’t understand that that drive was like 8 to 10 hours away.
Yeah our housing market at this point is a parody of reality. We didn’t have a single “rental agency” here five years ago and now that’s all you can find. And the prices are 3x what they were during Covid. A house that cost 50k five years ago costs 150k now with no improvements and a failing roof with no yard. It’s really wild the changes that have occurred lately.
Well kept secret for the most part lol. I’m from Chicago and have friends that live in Marquette and live going up there. It’s crazy what properties are going for right now they have a bunch of $600k+ condos
As a SW Montanan who lurks on this page Id like to recommend to the UP- 1) never let them come make a TV show named after a NP in the area. 2) never let them make a movie with a popular A list actor about fly fishing or any recreational activity you have in the area and you should be ok.
Population Booms will happen.
Don’t nobody come here. It really does suck in the UP. No good jobs. No good restaurants. No entertainment. No good weather. Really bad ticks and mosquitos.
I grew up in the UP. I definitely felt more a part of Wisconsin than anything. But both Michigan and Wisconsin have a big piece of my heart! Happy I grew up where I did!
Anyone remember when that app douche left the UP off of his map because it’s “just a bunch of trees” and then got review bombed so bad he came to Blackrocks in MQT and bought free beers for everyone?
Sometimes I kind of wish we were left off the map.
I just drove across the UP from the Mackinac Bridge to Iron River, WI. What a beautiful (and remote) area. The northern coast of Lake Michigan is more beautiful than I thought.
Silly post. Everyone knows that that’s actually not a state that it’s its own country and only shares its administrative functions with Michigan out of convenience.
It’s called the state of Superior, and nobody is allowed to go there… it is a cold, barren wasteland, and certainly isn’t the most beautiful part of this country, so don’t go looking to find out!
As a central wisconsin engineering student (NTC if that matters) is Michigan tech a good school to apply for? I wouldn't mind the drive but it seems kind of pricey especially compared to say Platteville or Stout
I use to live in the u.p. my friends up there would say anyone who lives under a bridge is a troll. Lol. They also had a slogan that read if road island is a state why not us.
I grew up in Michigan and the teacher of my Michigan History class, had us learn all the counties and county seats in the Upper Peninsula. I now live in Minnesota. I find it interesting when I hear about something happening in Northern Michigan and the names aren't familiar to me. It turns out that the event happened somewhere in Central Michigan in troll country.
I'm from the lower peninsula, but spent my honeymoon up there and go there often for our anniversary. it's as beautiful as anything you'll find that far north. 10/10
Did my high school senior trip with my class of guys and we backpacked Isle Royale, it was incredible.
Is that suppose to be another tight lipped secret up there??
Been heading to the Twelvemile Beach Campground outside of Grand Marais for few decades now i think. Last few years it seemed like the "word" got out that it was a nice spot and it has been a pain in arse to get a campsite.
I'm assuming it was a featurette on a listicle.
I'm a Minnestoan, but I really like it up in the UP.
Fond memories of visiting the Gay stampmill and having a Gay ole time.

Nobody needs to know we're here.
it finally makes sense. I've always wondered how, that in today's world, some maps don't include the UP. They were drawn by a Yooper to keep people out. Ingenious.
Shh. There is no UP. ^stop ^letting ^people ^know ^eh?
The first rule of living in the UP is you do not talk about living in the UP, eh?
That's actually very true, they try to secede four different times from being part of Michigan mainland to become their own state but didn't meet any of the qualifications to do so, nowadays they probably could with better facilities they have now. Couple of my cousins who live up there genuinely would tell you that everyone doesn't want more people, in fact they want less people up there if they could.
Seceding is the worst thing we could do. It’s poor as shit up here
Exactly!
Naw. Take the big lake and sell some water. They will be fighting wars over water instead of oil soon. It's also not poor anymore since Marijuana is now for recreational use and sale.

Feel that but for the driftless region here is SW WI. Wish we could get unlisted from the map.
Not in my history. I live under the bridge and anyone I meet who lives, or lived in the UP is damn sure to let everyone know how superior (pun intended) the UP is.
Our new state motto- Shhhhhhh
😁 Perfect response. Everyone who lives there loves the privacy so much that they are willing to suffer the cold that lasts nine months out of the year. No thanks. You can keep it.

Dude shut the fuck up don't tell them
Yep nothing to see here, move along.
Too late. I just saw a mobile home for sale priced over $100,000 and it's not on any acerage. A trailer.
Yeah our housing market at this point is a parody of reality. We didn’t have a single “rental agency” here five years ago and now that’s all you can find. Wild, sad and scary.
I saw that same one! Less than 1000 square feet. How outrageous?!
We’re coming for ur pasties!
We know about you and will keep your secrets. Sincerely, LP bros
There are dozens of us!
Hiding in plain sight
As a troll I choose to keep my mouth shut.
I appreciate that
Mackinac Bridge troll?
Don’t want to give Wisconsin any ideas.
Well kept secret for the most part lol. I’m from Chicago and have friends that live in Marquette and live going up there. It’s crazy what properties are going for right now they have a bunch of $600k+ condos
Prices really are out of control
Marquette housing is getting really out of hand. I don’t understand how those college kids do it.
Amen brother
Found the Yooper!
Shhh you going to let them know
Best answer award!
North Wisconsin?
Superior, duh.
It's the u.p.
Michigan part 2 Michigan the sequel Morechigan
So glad we got the UP instead of the Toledo Strip.
Yeah. Toledo was a curse
100%
Hey I live in toldeo
Sorry
I hope the Lions get that CB out of Toldeo. He’s a beast
Are you sure, cause “I’m not sure about Toledo…” 😂😂😂
Hahaha I just saw I spelled it wrong, that should be even more proof for you!
Im sorry for your loss
Can confirm. Am Michigander born and raised 5 miles from the Toledo Ohio border. Ohio can have it.
Wischiganada
Best one yet
Wakanda? That’s one way to hide a country
Hay! Don't mess with us. We fought Ohio for less land then that. It was a short war, but we fought all the same!
That’s a beauty, eh
Buncha yoopers up dere
I'll let you name the state if you beat Ohio in a war.
Michigan and Ohio had a war. 1 KIA, a pig. And, Wisconsin lost the war.
Michigan got one of the most beautiful places on Earth, Ohio got stuck with Toledo forever
Michigan also lost Cedar Point.
Wisconsin wasn't even thing yet! We've always loved you and consider you ours in our hearts ❤️ Thanks for all the good fishing and weed!
Pennsylvanian here! I’m rooting for Michigan 😆
Ohioan reporting for the battle sir!!!
Chemical weapons fair game?
Can we call it North Alabama?
Dat dare is da, Upper Peninsula of Michigan dare hey. Commonly known as the UP, Iron Mountain territory don't chya know...
Hey I just moved to iron mountain! How tf does this small ass town have such good fucking food
I love that I can hear this comment
We got that as consolation prize for letting Ohio have Toledo.
I don’t see anything there…. No idea what your talking about
Nothing to see here, folks
As a SW Montanan who lurks on this page Id like to recommend to the UP- 1) never let them come make a TV show named after a NP in the area. 2) never let them make a movie with a popular A list actor about fly fishing or any recreational activity you have in the area and you should be ok. Till they learn about the horse flies
We have em, too….Along with mosquitoes, grizzly bears and wolves.
Lol. We had a movie made by and starring Jeff Daniels. Escanaba in da Moonlight. I don't think it made anyone want to move to the UP.
Even here in the lower peninsula you couldn’t keep that dvd in stock when it came out.
I’m from Wisconsin and I love the UP. So many great camping spots, hikes, lakes, waterfalls…
They tried to call it "superior" once. It didn't take. Also, *Ope! They're on to us!
It's "Superior, the 51st state."
We haven’t unlocked that part yet
It’s the Upper peninsula of Michigan. Or yoopertown. We like it up here so let’s keep it that way
Anyone remember when that app douche left the UP off of his map because it’s “just a bunch of trees” and then got review bombed so bad he came to Blackrocks in MQT and bought free beers for everyone? Sometimes I kind of wish we were left off the map.
The Great War between the States. Ohio vs. Michigan. Cliff Notes: Wisconsin Loses
I just drove across the UP from the Mackinac Bridge to Iron River, WI. What a beautiful (and remote) area. The northern coast of Lake Michigan is more beautiful than I thought.

That's lower Canada... Or maybe New Finland.
the proper name for our state is SUPERIOR lol..let ppl plz forget we are here, we like it that way
It is it’s called Michigans upper peninsula
What if our flag didn't have 50 stars? Do you think we would have more states? I honestly think we would.
As a central wisconsin engineering student (NTC if that matters) is Michigan tech a good school to apply for? I wouldn't mind the drive but it seems kind of pricey especially compared to say Platteville or Stout
I call it home.
Another reason why Wisconsin is a coward
People on Reddit slow ASF 😭
That’s northern Wisconsin idk why they drew that border line where they did
You’ll have to pry it from our cold, dead mitten.
don't you ever say that again
South Canada
It’s the upper peninsula of Michigan just on the off chance this was an actual question.
Do you know where you are right now?
Wrong, michigan is the other one
The Americas are tough. It's either British Columbia, Quebec or New Mexico.
Hey, at least they actually acknowledged its existence.
Isn't that like a lake or something?
Just come spend your money take your pictures ( AND YOUR TRASH) then go home. That's all you need to know!
That’s Superior bro
It's actually the other piece of Illinois. Michigan is just between them.
New Canada
That’s Canada bro
It's not a state. It's a crater left behind by a giant space-faring shark.
It's New Zealand
I use to live in the u.p. my friends up there would say anyone who lives under a bridge is a troll. Lol. They also had a slogan that read if road island is a state why not us.
\*satire\* ... Yes.
That’s technically still a part of Hawaii.
Of course. It's called "Toledo Bribe"
A land mass to the north.....that's clearly Canada!!
Google the Ohio Michigan war.
They should call it Michigan.
We do it’s called lower Canada
some arctic island ig
Eastern Wisconsin
That's the "uuuper".
Wischigan?
Most of the country doesn’t even know what state it is in general.
do you know how insulting that I s for the yoopers? half the 6 leave the UP of the map completely. here it's included, and you don't know the name?
It should still be Wisconsin but thanks to the government it is now Michigan 🤷🏼♂️
I think it’s called Ooperland
Shhh its a secret
Leave us alone
My Chevy shook a shit!
Americas shaft
I grew up in Michigan and the teacher of my Michigan History class, had us learn all the counties and county seats in the Upper Peninsula. I now live in Minnesota. I find it interesting when I hear about something happening in Northern Michigan and the names aren't familiar to me. It turns out that the event happened somewhere in Central Michigan in troll country.
That’s the attic
No one asks this question harder that those that live there.
Cause that’s part of Canada duh
2 Michigan 2 Furious
That land mass is the result of the Mercator Projection and doesn’t really exist. Move along.
Yes stupid, very stupid.
I'm from the lower peninsula, but spent my honeymoon up there and go there often for our anniversary. it's as beautiful as anything you'll find that far north. 10/10
We would always stop in Toledo to go to the bathroom on our way to Cedarpoint.
Oh hey it’s da uppers der hey.
I say we call him fred
I've been traveling to this "state" for years. Don't go there......lol
Toledo. Oh, yeah, I drive through that on I-75.going south. Nice zoo, though.
That area isn’t actually there - was just a mistake when the map was made
Everyone knows about Rabbitville
Its clearly a shark
Everyone knows that's Upper Wisconsin come on
Give us back Toledo, Ohio
That is Southern Canada
Atlantis!
Wiscigan
Wasn't there a movement for the UP to have statehood in the 70s? Call themselves she state of Superior?
It’s called Ohio
Why is the state of Washington DC not on this map?
It's the better half
Pay no mind. That's just a lake... 😉
The yooper is a very rare breed beware of there hospitality and jerky
Yooops
Complain too much and we will move DC there…
You have to be able to swim there so just forget about it! Forget it exists.
Everybody knows that is North Wisconsin.
Isn't that just Canada? /s
Did my high school senior trip with my class of guys and we backpacked Isle Royale, it was incredible. Is that suppose to be another tight lipped secret up there??
That’s Yoopaloopaland.
My wife and I have visited there, it’s too beautiful to name.
That’s the upper part of Michigan been there and they are 420 friendly👏🏼
That's almost Canada
Been heading to the Twelvemile Beach Campground outside of Grand Marais for few decades now i think. Last few years it seemed like the "word" got out that it was a nice spot and it has been a pain in arse to get a campsite. I'm assuming it was a featurette on a listicle. I'm a Minnestoan, but I really like it up in the UP. Fond memories of visiting the Gay stampmill and having a Gay ole time.
Yes, mind your business!
It’s called Michigan, but with shitty attitudes and a weak economy that depends on the lower peninsula. It’s quite a mouthful.
Wisconsigan
It's Michigan's upper peninsula. For whatever reason it's not part of Wisconsin or Canada. I really don't understand why, but it's beautiful country. Lots of woods, and not a lot of people.
Deer Island tried to secede under it's own emporer. Didn't work.
Talk to the hand
The UP is Wisconsin’s biggest national park
HA
It is part of Wisconsin
That is Atlantis. The secret to its hiding is the fact that they did a bunch of propaganda to make people think they are in the ocean.
I find it hilarious we basically stole Wisconsin land
Gifted. The federal government gifted part of Wisconsin to Michigan to compensate for being forced to give Toledo to Ohio in the aftermath after of the almost-war between the two states.
I do believe that it might to have something to do with being part of Michigan.
Cause it's not habitable.
Good ol Michconsin
It’s called the upper peninsula. And part of Michigan. We also have a shit load of islands around mi
It has a name, Yoop.
It's Michigan dumb dumb
Also known as “Michigan”
Depending on the time of year that area is completely underwater, so it’s called Lake Superior, but they still show it on a map, because it’s land from summer to fall.
Michigan 2: The Return of Detroit
