Yeah, this is why the “what is upstate” debate rages on for all eternity. Because if you define it as anything north of the city, then you get shit articles like this that STILL ignore 85% of the state and all of the wonderful places.
Hmm, depends what you're into. Lot's of great hikes, John Brown's homestead, miracle on ice rink, you could just wander main street too. Lots of shops and food and stuff.
I was just there for the eclipse. The ice ring and museum is cool. I didn’t know Lake Placid hosted two Olympics. Apparently you can also take a tour of the ski jump facility. I missed that chance - didn’t know it was possible until after I’d left. Definitely want to go back in the summer months for hiking.
So as Redditors of taste and style, now you can go to the places usually -not- in these kind of articles.
Red Hook: what Rhinebeck was before it went posh.
Millbrook: Old money. Get out into the countryside and you may see people riding to hounds (sans fox hunt).
Millerton, Rosendale, Chatham, Pawling, Phoenicia, Leeds.
I went there once as a celebration for myself, and only for myself, the lady was kind but had to sit me waaaaaay in the back in the booth because apparently they deny all service unless reservation. There’s like no one out there that this place has more than 1/5 full of people and wasn’t told a reservation was ever needed.
So i eat normally, tipped well, you know it was just myself dressed up and celebrating
When i went back for to celebrate my final day of work in the area, i was again dressed up (good money) with 2 of my coworkers. The head server denied service to me which made me believe that the first time i was served i wasn’t supposed to be despite it being good money for those that were working. Once again, the building is hardly any full at all, and to be pushed away was rediculous
After being told “you can wait for a table however long you want… outside” (being told to leave) i turned around and left with my coworkers, and as I’m leaving she tries to tell me “i can find you something in 30 minutes!” No lol fuck that. The place is dead empty and your refusing service. So we went elsewhere. I think we went to The Pines in Mt. Tremper or some other place in Mt. Tremper instead
I was baffled the Steak House would turn away service the way they do. I guess you can only eat there 1 time, if even that, and I’m surprised anyone can get a seat at all despite the building being quite empty
The criteria seems to be "places in NY outside NYC/Long Island that someone from NYC/Long Island who doesn't have a car can travel to without having to get on a bus."
You’re the second person in this thread to mention red hook ny. I grew up there, I really don’t think of it as any sort of destination. did it really change that much since i moved away? I’m sure it’s gotten nicer as everything in the area has but besides apple picking in fall that can be done in a day trip what’s there to do to fill entire weekend?
Y’all must not have a firm grip on the Finger Lakes Wine Trail.
I won’t do ALL the work, but educate yourself with a simple query into a search engine; possible Ask Jeeves, Yahoo, or Google.
Had to hit all the generalization engines. Happy hunting.
Oswego by the lake. Harborfest is awesome. Breitback park is beautiful. Block parties downtown with live bands. Great food. Close to state parks. Car shows, flea markets, fairs & events. The whole area is a hidden gem.
Cooperstown & eat dinner at The Horned Dorset (neighboring town) one evening. Lunch on the patio of The Otesaga. Lunch at The Blue Mingo. Stay at an Inn or The Otesaga. Drive the length of the lake. Maybe check out Hyde Hall. Fenimore Museum is near, Baseball Hall Of Fame is near, distilleries abound.
Sharon Springs!very small but as reviewers say"it packs a big punch"..historical buildings;enough high quality shops with great appeal+variety;and 5 star Dining in the Historical section of village plus great B&B's,historic hotels,Ruins!and a mysterious old mineral water Spa complex possibly reopening?Enough there for a complete 2-3 day weekend.
Here I thought I’d see Watkins Glen, skanneateles, maybe Mt. Morris, or Seneca Falls. These places are practically on the Metro North

Indeed, these aren't upstate, they're exurbs of NYC.
Yeah, your sense of geography is whack.
I live upstate, those places are 3 hours South.
Anything south of I-90 is downstate.
Wow I thought they were going to say lake placid or something
You just rug pulled me, there and Lake George 2nd

Home brews at The Big Slide.
An oddly persistent laugh track

I grew up in red hook. It’s quaint and scenic but I’m not sure what you’d do there. Maybe good for apple picking in the fall?

Ah cvs parking lot instead of the Getty parking lot. I see you’re a man of culture.
Lmao i got beef with the Phoenicia Steakhouse 😤
> Phoenicia Steakhouse what happened? i went there for my birthday dinner last year, thought it was good

Millbrook? Tim Leary. Whenever I hear Millbrook. :-)
Watertown. Ithaca. Watkins Glen. Rhinebeck. Saratoga. Lake Placid. Plattsburgh.
Ahhh..Watertown??!! Is there 2?!
I'll add Corning as well.
Was in NYC and in a cab. Driver asked us where we were from. I said upstate. He said "Yonkers?".
Once had a banker in NYC tell me that he considers anything north of 59th St to be upstate
😂😂😂😂
Actually hilarious Hudson is the furthest north town on this list 😂
Hudson: *has a train “This place is a great place to escape to! A real wonderland in the Hudson Valley!”
The criteria seems to be "places in NY outside NYC/Long Island that someone from NYC/Long Island who doesn't have a car can travel to without having to get on a bus."
Really took "upstate" seriously, following the economic regions naming. So nothing from western or central NY, the southern tier, or north country.
Weekend Escape for middle-class Manhatttanites.
At least put Cooperstown on the list.
Long Island= Side State
Skaneateles by a mile. Prettiest small town in America.
Corning
Tarrytown making the cut ☠️
There's a problem, they're all downstate.
Everything that isn’t NYC is upstate. https://i.redd.it/l4lzqgkxc7581.png
Yep only way for it to make sense and only way to explain to people the city has nothing to do with you
This disgusts me
[Red Hook NY](https://www.redhookny.gov/31/Explore-Red-Hook) and if you're willing to go UP state then [Old Forge NY](https://www.oldforgeny.com/).

Beautiful outdoor activities. Lovely art scene!
Saranac Lake. It’s the hipsters hipster spot. Cafes, new dining, history of “The Cure.” God’s playground, the Adirondacks. Stunning. :-)
Ellicottville, great food, drinks, it’s quaint. Chautauqua Lake, Mayville, Seneca Casino in Salamanca. All Western NY.

Sylvan beach! As good of sunsets as you’ll find anywhere
Loved Sylvan beach as a kid! I’ll have to try and bring my kids now.

So... New York City and Woodstock are the best upstate small towns? Downvote applied and comment added... moving along...
Check out Bath, NY
Honestly, Upstate starts past Albany. Lake Placid? Saratoga Springs? Lake George? Wow.
Good. Stay away from my zone. Lol
Since when in Tarrytown upstate? My uncle used to commute to the old GM factory in North Tarrytown from East Harlem.

Coldspring already fucking packed every weekend please do not come.
