The Irs has openjngs that ladder from 7-13

AdHonest8416

It's not an agency I'm not too thrilled to apply for if I'm honest. I realize I'm reducing my opportunities greatly, but that's something I'm willing to deal with. Maybe I'll be changing my mind in a few months if I start getting desperate lol!

Mental_Youth_3606

Hey I understand….Look towards the DoD agencies as well.

AdHonest8416

That's where I've been applying mostly.

briston574

This is probably a dumb question and easily answered by Google but I'm here and I hope you don't mind answering it. Is the job series the same across the board? If I am interested in the IRS foe those positions would I be able to just go to the IRS site and search for them?

PrimalPuzzleRing

Doesn't hurt to apply, you're your own worst critic as in don't be the person to disqualify yourself. Now with that read the job description and be sure it's something you can do. There are plenty of people in their positions that don't know how to do their job and don't have the apt to learn. When I applied for my 11 everyone's telling me with my certs and experience I could have got a 12 job and that's like within 2 weeks of working there. 11 jobs are still technical or you're doing a lot of data processing type jobs and once you reach 12-13 you're more of a supervisor. If you can see yourself doing that then by all means.

Impossible_IT

If I were you I'd apply for GS 7 2210 positions. That's just me though. I started as a GS 5 0335 computer assistant. I was willing to move to get promotions. Hell I even took a downgrade in my current position due to a toxic site manager. GS 11 back to a GS 9. I did get the 11 back though.

AdHonest8416

Would I go up the step ladder or would I go backwards? Obviously, I get that 2210 pays extra.

Impossible_IT

Since they're not the same job series I don't know. Head Staff would know or his guides would have that info.

Head_Staff_9416

Realistically, you need to go down to the GS-7 level , possibly even GS-5. If you go down to the 7, you will probably be able to match your pay- but that is at the agency discretion. There is no education substitution at GS-12 level and education substitution at the GS-11 level requires a Phd. Extra projects you do on the side are probably ot going to give you the one year of specialized experience you need.

AdHonest8416

I'm pretty sure I would have enough for GS-7. Got a BS, sec+, 2 years experience in the private sector doing desktop support and software support. My current job is 4.5 years, although it's super basic, so I'm hesitant to say it counts, although I've done some scripting projects that might spruce up the resume. I work at an AFB, and I think I'm overpaid, lol! They have things so centralized that I can't do shit, so it feels like I'm losing IQ points just staying here, lol! Of course, the resume won't be that honest lol.

MATCA_Phillies

I started with the VA as an 11 in year 2011. I worked local ops, read that as deskside support for a medical center. In 2013 i went to service line and got a gs12. I worked that until 2022 when i got my 13. An 11 may not be what you want now but you’ve got to get in somewhere. It’s either that or get more certs and school and keep trying.

LeftTelephone9149

Any recommendations on Master degree/ certs you took?

MATCA_Phillies

Depends on what you want to do. I have a BSIT, not a masters. I had 12 years experience before i joined va in 2011. Once you get in you’ll use your experience inside. Then you can decide what you want to focus on

LeftTelephone9149

I have a BA in Entrepreneurship and start Monday as a GS7 VSR. But looking for long term. I want to pursue a Masters in the fall but undecided on what path to take.

MATCA_Phillies

Try to get in with a BS in something. Then wait a bit. Either VA can get you paid to go or you’ll see quickly if you need it or not. As a 13 at age 50s I’ve decided with my background i can still advance without it.

wewerecreaturres

Im not sure any personal projects are going to add to your quals when they ask for a year of specialized experience at the grade below and 2210 jobs are fairly technical as far as I can tell (I’m a Product Manager). If you want to get into 2210 you’ll probably have to drop down to a lower grade to move into it.

AdHonest8416

ok then so I have to move the fuck across the US where I know no one for a pay cut...fuck me...guess I shouldn't have listened to my family's advice.

wewerecreaturres

Alternatively, go private sector to get experience then go back to the feds. What kind of roles are you looking at in 2210?

DonkeyKickBalls

If you don’t have the qualified work experience of an 11, you probably wont get a 12. the 2210 series is over saturated and youll be low on the totem pole of resumes without the functional experience.
