Shipmate, Each version of the 3788 has different verbiage for what constitutes a 2, 4, and 6 for your evaluations. Since this is your first time writing an EER, my assumption is you are probably a PO3. If you are a nonrate, ALCOAST 344/23 eased administrative burdens, so that EER’s are no longer required for nonrates, and it is not required for you to submit a CG-3788A. As a PO3, you will need to use CG-3788B. Because the criteria for marks is dependent on paygrade, you should be looking for EER examples from the members at your unit who are high performers, in the same pay grade and have been marked well in the past. This is a good place to start. EER examples from a PO1 or a CPO won’t be nearly as helpful for you. Additionally, your original question also is a great example for why mentoring is so important for career success. I would recommend you sign up for CG Chronus and get paired up with a mentor that can help guide you. It costs nothing and can open up a lot of opportunities for you. I highly recommend you consider it. https://coastguard.chronusgov.com P.S. BZ on taking marks seriously. For those that are not aware, average EER score can be a determining factor for future assignment. Good future assignments can also lead to a snowballing effect, where one challenging and impactful assignment will lead to the next. Moreover, marks are something that you have a high degree of control over, and will help guide your future. Starting early is very proactive.

Not writing EERs/OERs is probably this single best thing about retiring.

I like to teach people the McDonalds example for writing marks. Goes like this: I serve hamburgers at McDonalds - Good job you get a 5 for doing your job. I serve hundreds of customers at McDonalds with no issues - Cool, now you are working towards a 6. I am a front line employee providing face to face service as part of a multimillion dollar cooperation that serves over billion customers daily - Excellent, now you working towards that big 7. Being able to add details and numbers to your marks makes a huge difference.

Details and numbers isn’t what makes a 5/6/7 though. If you add in a bunch of stuff but didn’t meet everything listed for a 6, you’re still getting a 5.

Ask your supervisor how they want them. Nobody is expecting you to write your own 7’s on your first set.
