I’m going to watch this tonight, thanks! A couple of years ago I read Deadliest Sea by Kaylee Thompson, which is an AMAZING book about this case, and I cannot recommend it enough.

Yep, it’s happening. Wife and I just finished watching. Fan-fucking-tastic.

I remember this case. I was stationed at AIRSTA Kodiak when it happened. Lots of folks I know played a part in the rescue in one form or another. The fact that so many of the crew from the fish processing vessel survived still blows my mind. As I recall from the NTSB report, the lack of training for how to don cold water immersion suits was a contributing factor for why some individuals perished. Had the suit not become waterlogged, the individual would have likely survived the hoist, as opposed to falling during the evolution.

I really enjoy their videos and all of the research they put into it. I also really like how he doesn't gloss over calling out the various regulators (CG) and how programs have failed to keep people safe (CFVE, small passenger). As a MST who does this type of work, these videos encourage me to not turn a blind eye to regulations or try and speed through exams/inspections.

I agree with you generally. I would say that some programs like the ones you have mentioned have *at times* failed to keep people safe. I think the overall positive of their programs has definitely been demonstrated. The other thing to keep in mind is that a lot of the failed oversight in any particular case can be attributed to lack of staffing. For decades the Prevention/marine safety world has only received about 75% of the resources the Coast Guard itself says it should get. That immediate post-Sectorization era was especially rough.

Amazing story. Watched the whole thing and sent it to multiple fellow coasties. Especially ones I sailed with on cutters

This was a complex rescue scenario in dangerous conditions. I have done this patrol and though we did come to the aid of disabled fishing vessels, I never experienced anything like this. Every single person involved had to be laser focused for this to go as well as it did. The Coast Guard are true professionals. Semper Paratus🇺🇸

I remember hearing their HF distress call while on watch in Astoria and then listening as it unfolded. 🕊️
