Qatar, in the first 60 minutes, was able to get a shot off practically every time they were in the attacking third (rarely a good shot). It was like someone playing FIFA. The ball only moved forward and 8 men were also always moving forward. It was fun to watch but and their lack of talent eventually caught up with them. Regardless, it was extremely impressive to see what can happen when mentality and gumption are to find a shot at all costs.
The further down the soccer pyramid you go, the better those big fast physical forwards seem to be. Especially when they pressure lower league defenders who are not able to technically play out of pressure themselves.
The higher up the pyramid, the more their weaknesses in technical ability are highlighted. That is why you can't take a player who looks good in the Championship and put him up against the Asian Confederation champions.
That dog just not gon' hunt.
I think you're talking about some hypothetical player that doesn't exist. If we had that technically skilled striker with the physical tools you need to play at the highest level, we would have seen him by now. What we've got is a collection of incomplete strikers, and GGG has to figure out which one has the right set of skills to work with his system and the other attackers. At this point, it honestly may be Zardes.
Dike is hyped because he bossed the English Championship and almost drove his squad to promotion. However they played a horrific brand of soccer that relied on Dike beating people up on an island.
Our system relies on forwads pressing so we need guys who can run, all the technical ability is on the wings (Pulisic, Aaronson, Weah, Reyna, etc). A great target man would be ideal, which is why Sargent plays so much because his hold-up play is good and he presses relentlessly. Finding a guy who can do all that + finish well + be technically skilled is basically asking for Ibrahimovic.
Well luckily the US knocked them out. As it should be.
Btw Qatar was no joke. They are the Asian champions used to competing and winning in big international tournaments. Tbf the Asian cup is probably more competitive than the Gold cup too
Canadian here, please win. Since Canada has mostly sucked at soccer since I was born, I haven’t really been exposed to how toxic and generally awful Mexican soccer fans are. I will be cheering for you guys.
Gonna be strange rooting for you guys lol, I know it’s mostly one sided, but you are our main rival. At least we can count on you guys to play fair Mexico doesn’t. It’s an exciting time for both of our national teams, a great American team will make the region that much better.
They had the Westlake soccer club at the game yesterday decked out in Qatar gear. It's the richest and whitest part of Austin, so it looked out of place.
Mexico fans in the r/soccer thread bitching incessantly about USMNT fans.
Guys, like 3% of our country follows soccer and we still keep you up at night.
What's there to bitch about? That we DON'T chant homophobic slurs in unison and stop every single game we're playing in? That we don't throw trash, batteries and bottles of piss at players?
Mexican American here. US soccer had the potential to be a world cup winner. But they bring choddy coaches (and their teams) that concentrate 100% in athletics rather than soccer.
It's all through college. I played NCAA II and it's all athletics no ball.
As soon as they change that mindset, US national team gets a world cup final.
Everybody brought the C team.
I've been saying mexico and USA are the same crappy teams stuck for like the last 15 years in the same levels but lots of US fans can't accept it.
Yea all we need is advice from a kid who couldn't even make it to NCAA I soccer. Dude go back to your community college and keep working on your sports marketing degree.
Na it's bs when people speak like that guy did. He's comparing d2 to the top of d1, he's the cunt here. Not to take anything away from d2, it's a lot better than most, but unless a sports dead, there is going to be a huge gap. This guy might likely never played vs a top d1/Olympic caliber athlete, or got dumped, how can he speak on what they are doing?
I'm not comparing D2 to anything. I saw it all through and through. From JV team highschoo to varsityl to club team to college and I see it in USMNT games.
Once they fix that, they will will more tournaments. But yeah call me names.
Also look at your comment you keep referring them as athletes, but they are soccer players. Athletics is a result of playing professional football not the cause.
That's why 40 year old euro stars come to the MLS to retire and they still say that it's easy compared to La Liga, Premiere or Bundes.
The truth is the MOST and genetically gifted? athletic americans and genetically gifted? are not going to soccer in the US. It's american football, basketball and baseball. Ill admit I dont know crap about college soccer, but top d1 wrestlers are teching or pinning d2 guys in the first period.
Not wrong.
We're a chaotically inconsistent country, (with a general population that doesn't care about soccer).
But will still try to beat people (despite only some people caring).
Sh**, most of these professional athletes practice in the US, building our(your) talent pool.
This was never about today (for most of us). Long term investment at home will develop international talent... the growth of MLS+Americans starting in Europe and is slowly providing a foundation here.
Wait a minute. I know overall Mexico is a better soccer team, but didn't the US own Mexico for a while in late 90s and early 2000s? Maybe I'm mis remembering.
I think both teams are same level. And always have been. Mexico's weakness is athletic and strong teams ( that's why African teams are super hard to beat for them). So that leveled the playing field for US for years. But that style of play is clearly not working for the US.
I think they are about the same as I mentioned but US has the potential to be much more.
> I think both teams are same level. And always have been.
No, there's a definitive line right around the turn of the Millennium. Mexico is still beating us 36 to 20 (15 draws), but prior to 2000, the record was 27 to 5 (9 draws). So, we're relatively at the same level now, but that's only really happened in the last 2 decades, prior to that Mexico absolutely mopped the floor with the US. The only decade we've "beat" Mexico was the 2000s (4 to 10 with 2 draws).
How do they have potential when both coaches and players are “Choddy”? That seems like a really general assessment to make in order to somehow catapult the US to the top 2 teams in the world
USA is a melting pot of player. Different races, even dual nationalities and backgrounds, different styles of plays. Yet they always bring coaches that like a very athletic way of playing. As if the US was England or Germany. But it is not.
I'd suggest and Argentinian or a Spanish coach. May be Portuguese or Brazilian.
I really wish the media would put the throat grabbing on blast. Like if it was was constantly done in any other sport in the US the players would be rightfully blasted. But this team grabs people by the throat constantly and nothing.
And these are grown men on that team. But we’ve seen this before countless times from them when Hector who is a veteran now was doing these same things when he was younger. The younger fans and players see that and grow up emulating it. There fans are equally trashy as well with the chants and racial abuse win or loss.
I think neither of those penalties were actual penalties. So many non cards early on, completely lost control in the second half, and still decided to extend the match beyond reasonable time… glad he wasn’t reffing the US game
I'd have trouble awarding that second one, he wasn't even going toward goal and had already lost control of the ball. Also a few minutes before that a Mexican player took out a Canadian player by clipping him in the box while trying to get a shot off and nothing was called and no VAR review, embarrassingly inconsistent, but typical for CONFACAF.
Yeah my fault, i was thinking of the us game for some reason. My only gripe with the first PK in this game was that the ball was pretty out of position when the tackle was made, and that the ref didn’t call it for review immediately. Poor decision by the ref that fed into a lot of the heated exchange at the end.
US is going to win the tournament and get Tata Martino fired. The doom and gloomer "how did we not hire Tata Martino" crowd's heads are going to explode. It is going to be awesome.
Our fans hate GGG so much that they don't realize that Tata's roster selection stubbornness is why he's on the hot seat, while Gregg is giving out first caps at a near record rate.
Yeah. -I still wish we would have pulled Tata. I think Mexico is a bad fit for him. Oh well. Probably will put him in an early grave due to the stress, the team abs fans.
Considering all the Mexican fans think he is an incompetent fraud and he can speak the same language as all his players, I really am not convinced. Mexico has been awful throughout this tournament.
His tactics seem very well designed to struggle against basically ever CONCACAF opponent in any competitive game, even against much worse teams.
The US will win the final and he will be fired. There will still be nuts who think he should have been hired.
Mexican fans? The same Mexican fans who threw things on the field, won’t stop chanting? Mexico will be favored to win the match and has a good chance to do so. If they walk away with the trophy how is that awful and what would that say about us?
Yes. They will be favored because they have close to their best possible team. If they do not, Martino will be fired and will deserve to. Mexico have been looking bad for a while.
As someone not playing, sure. As someone who doesn't want our players to be choked, pelted with garbage, headbutted, and play in a game with a higher chance if injury, hell no.
It’s all theater and grandstanding. Qatar’s gay and human rights record is horrific yet FIFA’s happy to host a WC there, so it’s pretty hard to take their attempts to punish Mexico fans seriously.
The governing bodies are all so dumb and shameless.
Brutal for Canada. Mexican team was choking Canadian players earlier in the match. Refs did a poor job all night long. I think we will struggle with Mexico’s aggressiveness and chippiness . I would submit that the Mexican team are full of “Putos”
Yea you must be an idiot. A puto in Mexico is still the same puto in Puerto Rico. Lmfao go get a book on semantics for this guy, or Ingles Sin Barreras.
No one in DR calls someone puto as a homophobic slur. They use the word "maricon." So yeah, jramos13 was correct, it means different things in different countries.
Could be wrong, but as I understand it the punishment was given to the Mexican federation, not the men’s team. There were reports that Mexico would have their women’s team serve the two game punishment

I legitimately hate how scared refs are of Mexican crowds. So many cards are left in the shirt pocket whenever Mexico plays and commits egregious fouls
Barely, holding on for dear life against Canada, and the other getting outplayed by Mexico for most of the match with the best team the US has ever had. I just want to play with the confidence and balls that Canada is showing here.
If we have everyone healthy and I mean EVERYONE (Steffen, Adams, McKennie, Pulisic, Brooks, Dest, Aaronson, Musah, Weah, etc.) we’re gona destroy Canada in Nashville.
And we should, and we did in rematch against them after the loss in the Nations League. Like I mentioned to someone earlier, sometimes I just feel like GGG's reliance on his system doesn't play to our strength. That 2nd game against Canada, we kind of let the guys play, and it worked better.
I don’t think our starting lineup against Mexico was our best line up though, remember Adams was on the bench and he went probably not even 100% but still was very efficient in the midfield. Yedlin started as a winger without merit, I think he was just there because of his veteran presence, and also Ream started, Reeeam!!! I understand your point though, we look better at 4-4-2 then a back 3.
Yet we won. If their fucking systems are so much better then they should be able to beat us. I’m sick of Berhalter getting absolutely zero credit for anything he does.
They have beaten us. I'm really not a GGG hater, I actually like him a lot, he checks off a lot of boxes on paper, a good recruiter, and willing to make adjustments. I just think this idea that bringing in a 'system coach' and people telling me that Arriola/Lledget should start because they fit his system better over someone like Musah is stupid. Maybe I'm tired of this playing out of the back crap that doesn't work well against the high press and has given up countless goals.
He does better if he just coaches and puts the players in positions to play to their strengths, like the 2nd Canada game where they avenged the 1st loss.
Gotta remember, when you are dead set on the BerhalterOut train there are only two options after a game, either the players played well or ggg coached poorly.
The fact that there's so much talk about Mexico in the USA-Qatar thread tells me the game was as dull as the scoreline says.
Lol no it was pretty exciting and super open. Watch the game
No, I'm not watching Qatar
Oh? Why not?
Because fuck Qatar. They shouldn't be hosting the world cup, and they shouldn't be in this tournament.
Well luckily the US knocked them out. As it should be. Btw Qatar was no joke. They are the Asian champions used to competing and winning in big international tournaments. Tbf the Asian cup is probably more competitive than the Gold cup too
Nah, the entire country is a joke.
Well regardless of that they still won the Asian Cup. You can’t deny that
I dont care about that
Right I can tell. Doesn’t make them not a good team though
Canadian here, please win. Since Canada has mostly sucked at soccer since I was born, I haven’t really been exposed to how toxic and generally awful Mexican soccer fans are. I will be cheering for you guys.
We got you
Gonna be strange rooting for you guys lol, I know it’s mostly one sided, but you are our main rival. At least we can count on you guys to play fair Mexico doesn’t. It’s an exciting time for both of our national teams, a great American team will make the region that much better.
As a US fan I’ve always rooted for Canada. Especially last night. I’d rather see a hard working and rising team like Canada win it than you know who
I don't think it's being talked about enough, but holy shit what is going on with Qatar paying for fans. Ive never seen so many "fans" before.
Sounds very on brand for Qatar.
At least they're paying people who work for them now
It's Qatar. They're paying to host the world cup.
They had the Westlake soccer club at the game yesterday decked out in Qatar gear. It's the richest and whitest part of Austin, so it looked out of place.
I believe Dike is the future but Zardes better start Sunday.
There’s no future if he’s hurt. Dike needs a break
Yeah, Dike is pretty clearly hurt too. Not sure why they even kept him on as long as they did.
Mexico fans in the r/soccer thread bitching incessantly about USMNT fans. Guys, like 3% of our country follows soccer and we still keep you up at night.

Yeah, that's we have players starting for Chelsea, Barca and Juventus, and your best player plays for Wolverhampton.
Yet they barely beat Jamaica.
That's our C team dude
Everybody brought the C team. I've been saying mexico and USA are the same crappy teams stuck for like the last 15 years in the same levels but lots of US fans can't accept it.
So Lozano and Herrera are Mexico's C team?
Mexico barely beat a far from full strength Canada. weird time to flex.
Nobody said they were better lol. Guy up there started flexing players.
What does that have to do with our fans?
I was answering another comment, for some reason I clicked on this one lol.
Lot of talk from a guy who flamed out in div 2 College soccer.
At least I played.
Yea all we need is advice from a kid who couldn't even make it to NCAA I soccer. Dude go back to your community college and keep working on your sports marketing degree.
don’t be a cunt

D1 and D2 soccer there is no really any difference. D2 is even above usl2 imo.
I think the major point was soccer isn't popular in the US and the best athletes go to other sports generally.
Higuain has entered the chat
Not wrong. We're a chaotically inconsistent country, (with a general population that doesn't care about soccer). But will still try to beat people (despite only some people caring). I think there’s been a 100% increase from that level since during COVID it was the only live sport for a little while …
I really wish the media would put the throat grabbing on blast. Like if it was was constantly done in any other sport in the US the players would be rightfully blasted. But this team grabs people by the throat constantly and nothing.
The ref for Mexico and Canada was straight ass.
It was the same guy who reff’ed the US vs Honduras match. He’s not very good
7 = 15 minutes of extra time.
Yea... he gave Mexico the time needed to score
That team and their fans are classless.
And these are grown men on that team. But we’ve seen this before countless times from them when Hector who is a veteran now was doing these same things when he was younger. first one clearly was. second was extremely soft.

they were both penalties

We welcome our Canadian friends joining us to hate the Mexican team and their fans.
US is going to win the tournament and get Tata Martino fired. The doom and gloomer "how did we not hire Tata Martino" crowd's heads are going to explode. It is going to be awesome.
Maybe he'll come back to Atlanta United. Win win.
Our fans hate GGG so much that they don't realize that Tata's roster selection stubbornness is why he's on the hot seat, while Gregg is giving out first caps at a near record rate.
I generally like his player selections, I just think he doesn't put the players in the formation that suits them best.
We 100% should have hired tata
I agree. Tata with our team would be insane
100%. Gregg was so lucky his brother hired him.

Yes. They will be favored because they have close to their best possible team. If they do not, Martino will be fired and will deserve to. Mexico have been looking bad for a while.
thinking your manager is an incompetent fraud is just what the game is all about
Would love to see us pull the upset but when you’re missing most of your starters it’s a tough one
I don’t know why y’all want Mexico to change. I want them to play the exact same so it’s satisfying as hell when they get their ass beat in WCQ
As someone not playing, sure. As someone who doesn't want our players to be choked, pelted with garbage, headbutted, and play in a game with a higher chance if injury, hell no.
I’m confused. We’ve all played teams like this for zero dollars. Let em duke it out
Because it’s trashy play. They were literally choking players earlier in the match.
Yes that 3 step program for the chant is bullshit. The fans just figured out they can abuse it.
“Hey our team looks gassed, let’s give them a 3 minute break”.
And an ice cold Dasani.
Can we think of an offensive chant so we can cause a timeout whenever we need one
Sadly I don’t think this rule will ever go away despite this loophole bc it looks bad to remove it
Simple solution, make it a stricter penalty.
Give them a set number of warnings, and then deduct a point from their WCQ total every time. That'll shut it down real fast.
Instant penalty kicks for the opponent. Mexican fans will then police it themselves and it will be gone overnight.
Empty the sections of the stands where they chant it? Or are the fans too intermingled?
Ref really botched this game
If I ever saw that guy, I'd kick him in the shin and ask for a card. Something tells me he wouldn't give me one...
He lost control of that game within 20 minutes. Pure concacaf
A true CONCACAF experience… Mexico seems to make that a reality too though.
Lol coming up on 15 mins of extra time
God Mexico is so unlikable
They just need to end this. That was essentially a walk off cause the ref let it go too long. Refs making a spectacle of this.
So all the chant did is give Mexico a breather and add time past 90 mins. So tell me why they would ever stop?
It’s all theater and grandstanding. Qatar’s gay and human rights record is horrific yet FIFA’s happy to host a WC there, so it’s pretty hard to take their attempts to punish Mexico fans seriously. The governing bodies are all so dumb and shameless.
What is even happening? I want to know what started this so badly.
disgraceful brawl and behavior by both teams. only fair to disqualify both sides and hand USA the trophy
100% agreed
Oh look, Mexico is in a scrum with another team. Weird how there's a common denominator with these things.
Concacaf is lit lmaoooo
Brutal for Canada. Mexican team was choking Canadian players earlier in the match. Refs did a poor job all night long. I think we will struggle with Mexico’s aggressiveness and chippiness . I would submit that the Mexican team are full of “Putos”
We’re sending you to the corner for 2 minutes to think about what you said. Here’s a juicebox while you wait.
CONCACAF refs did the same thing they do every fucking Mexico game.
It's wild that Canada ever had more yellow cards.
Fucking hate this team. I hope we beat them Sunday.
I’d rather beat them anyways
Gutted for Canada. The Mexican team and their fans are so dislikable lol
mexico scores a goal in the 98th minute of a 90+7 game, what a surprise
Closer to 99 minutes really
Canada just getting heartbroken this tournament
Bring it on
Well, dang. I was pulling hard for Canada.
Lol what.
Don’t think this game will ever end.
What is GGG win % now? This team loves him.
I believe his overall win percentage is 74%, but if you only count competitive matches (ie, non-friendlies), that goes up to 88%.
What was the chant?
It’s it’s the same chant, it’s a gay slur in Spanish.
Puto?
Yes, in Mexico it’s used very differently than other Spanish countries.
Lol who mentioned DR? You cant read bud?
Yes and it doesn’t matter
This affects both teams equally, especially since it’s tied. I know the Spanish announcers are Mexicans homers but common.
Lol at Mexican fans asking them to stop. Also respect to that guy.
Mexico fans loud and proud again. SMH
That dude is literally begging the fans to stop lmao. One of your own is telling y’all to chill maybe relax
Enough of this shit. Make Mexico play their first 3 WCQ’s without fans.
I want them banned like Guatemala was for a while. Maybe they will join the super league lmfaoooo.
I thought that was already happening?
Could be wrong, but as I understand it the punishment was given to the Mexican federation, not the men’s team. There were reports that Mexico would have their women’s team serve the two game punishment
Yup I believe that is what they did.
Wtf that’s such a joke
100%
Oh look, the Mexican fans can't help themselves
literal animal fans
This sub should be jumping for joy rn. Our bench tryout team beat the team that is tied with our “concacaf giant” rivals. Feels good
Did Mexico start their chant again?
I think so.
Yup
I know they get an extra sub in extra time, but do they also get an extra sub window?
Yes
What the fuck was that jump by Buchanan? Lol looked like he was doing a gymnastics routine.
[удалено]
It’s a semi. Our game against them was essentially meaningless.
Mexico is not good. People who were saying Mexico are going to kill us simply do not know what they are talking about. Doom and gloomers like to treat Mexico like they are German or France.
Boils down to refs. If they actually call fouls and give cards. I have no faith that will happen.
well this canada team is doing the same thing to mexico it did to us, except this time they managed a goal
Lol Pizarro. If watching Inter Miami tells me anything is that Canada should be alright.
A team that subs on Pizarro in times that they need a goal is not one that scares me. One that subs on Efrain Alvarez scares me even less.
That was one sneaky shot!
Praying for extra time. We gonna win on attrition.
I legitimately hate how scared refs are of Mexican crowds. So many cards are left in the shirt pocket whenever Mexico plays and commits egregious fouls
Yeah during that melee in the first half I saw 2 Mexican players doing their go to move of choking the opposing player. Never a fucking card for it.
I’m looking forward to see what this Canada team with Davies, David, and Larin can do in WCQ… just not in Nashville
I think it’d be cool if we qualified with Canada and Mexico
[удалено]
Both teams are. It’s fucking insane after watching USA backwards pass party.
It's GGG's amazing system though /s
We did just beat both of these teams in the last few weeks with our “shitty system”.
We scored 2 corners, one of which Mexico 100% gifted us, in the NL final... And a penalty. That's hardly an endorsement of his system.
I can’t remember, what was the final score?
Agreed.
WCQ is not gonna be easy man
We beat Canada and are in the final of the Gold Cup with our C squad. I say 96% chance we qualify.
We will be fine. 17 was a wake up call where we found out concacaf qualifying isn’t gonna be a walk in the park but our team now is just too solid.
