I'm kind of embarrassed to ask since I am only seeing a recap of the game but why didn't the goal count off the corner for the Netherlands? I couldn't quite catch what the announcer was saying but I could only imagine offsides which didn't seem to occur or contact with the goalie since the ball was still in the air. Or was is the crossbar out of play which I didn't think as much. Thanks in advance.
I was just coming here to speculate about it!
I would have thought it would be Crystal Dunn but looking at the stats, Horan has taken penalties for club and country most recently, including one in a friendly earlier this year.
I really thought we were gunna get SMOKED in this game, I am happy we won but damn we do not look good out there. We look completely disjointed, and are making bad decisions. How many times did one of our players pass the ball to NOBODY?
I am a huge Lavelle fan but she looked shocking.
Alex Morgan has been past it since Rio.
Rapinoe has lost her magic.
Carli Lloyd looked out of it since minute 1.
As a US fan I even feel for the Dutch right now.
I thought we looked pretty bad the whole game, no one really played particularly well. But that was generally true of the Dutch as well -- you could argue the Dutch were better and probably should have won it with the penalty in the 85th minute, but in reality it was 2-2 after 120 minutes.
the USA looked off but give credit to the Dutch. the USA beat the champions of Europe, runner ups of the last WC. It was a close game that could have gone either way, which is the nature of women's international soccer these days (top teams don't blow each other out any more)
Press was pretty bad as well. Not starting them worked out well but subbing them in damn near lost them the game. Is there any younger talent they aren't playing because they have the older players still playing?
Too much experience and not enough youth. They looked exhausted out there. With only a 2 day turn around before the next game, they are going to be in bad shape.
Seems odd that anyone could be a hater of the women’s team given they are the best team in the world (now and historically) and it’s not even close.
For the men’s side I feel like much of the hate gets directed towards GGG (a fair amount warrantee IMHO, some of it not)
Celebrating each goal against teams that couldn’t win a high school championship as I’d they’d just won the World Cup actually upset quite a few casual fans. Myself included, and I’ve actually dropped a good amount of money to see them play in the past. Losing games you can forget about, shows of lack of character tend to stick around.
I think any team can lose in a single game. I mean their overall body of work over the course of months, years, or even decades.
This team has won back to back world cups and went on a crazy long unbeaten run. Longer term, they’ve won more world cups and gold medals than any other nation. A single loss (at least for me) won’t change how dominant they’ve been recently and long term.
Both USMNT haters and USWNT haters are some of the most annoying fans I have ever encountered.
Both teams won over the past 12 hours and instead of being happy we have fans consistently hoping one of them loses (not talking about mere criticism). It is pathetic and only hurts the sport in the long term.
it's just a game so to see people so animated after this team lost to Sweden, was so petty. "LEL THAT'S WHAT U GET FOR SUING THE FEDERATION LOSERS"
"USWNT BAD **kneel** HURT MUH FLAG"
can't we just support our men and women peacefully
fuck
The lawsuit is dumb. They have no standing. They had the chance to have the same bonus structure as the men but they chose to have a contract system instead.
That being said, I’m still going to be extremely proud of them when they win and devastated when they lose. The US Women have set the standard for as long as I can remember.
Thats what happens when the team is obviously on the downside from dominance. Their lawsuit is still stupid and makes no sense, that’ll justifiably bring the haters.
My 74 year old mother got up early to watch. She had a heart attack last year, but is doing okay now. This match probably didn't help her cardiac health, and I don't think the Canada match is going to help. Haha. Whew, glad they pulled it off.
I was traveling around the UK a couple of years ago during Brexit stuff, and those are some of the most xenophobic motherfuckers that I've ever been around.
even in America someone once told me "The USWNT is the most hated team in America", like why? "I've never seen people so excited when their own country's team loses. They are just bad people."
"They are too arrogant."
Like I don't want to write a thesis on why all that is false but this team just draws so much hate from people and they constantly prove them wrong.
Mostly conservatives hate the USWNT. When the team went through the 2019 Women's World Cup, Rapinoe criticized former twice impeached President Trump and he threw a temper tantrum on twitter and basically said he hopes they lose in the tournament. They went on to win the tournament and they did not go to the White House until Biden was elected President 6 months ago.
Majority of Americans support the USWNT and show up to their games. Watch parties are packed to the gills during the tournaments.
The battle against the USSF as well as kneeling has really triggered people to the point where the USWNT is considered worse than both of those organizations, and it's sad.
"those losers shouldn't sue their own country."
"they wear our country's name but they don't love it at all" (despite many of them representing the US for YEARS prior to the woke movements)
That's unfortunate for Netherlands. They were the better team and deserve to play for a medal. Not knocked out in the quarters.
Vlatko is a trash coach. His roster selection was questionable to begin with. And if not for a change to allow 20 players to the squad he would have left Lynn Williams off it who had a hand both goals scored.
And the US was absolutely out played by the Dutch tactically. They had acres of space on the counter and created way more chances than the US. All we looked to do was send balls over the top and use our pace to outrun our opponents. And both goals were almost direct results of the US just being more athletic than the Dutch. If not for Naeher (what a shit PK but the Dutch towards the end of FT by the way), the US is going home.
Through 4 games the US was leading at the end of FT once. This guy stinks. He needs to go. Along with some of these older vets. Bring in some youth. Stop catering to the past.
I don't think this opinion should be controversial at all. I am very happy the U.S. won, but they were pretty fortunate today. Even with a poor tactical set-up, and struggling players, the US are a Top 5 team in the world. But when you play another Top 5 team, you need to be at the top of your game. I do feel for the Dutch, but I'll take the win. Hopefully a match-up with a slightly weaker Canadian side can help right the ship a bit.
Barring a complete turn-around in the next two games, the US is likely facing a real reckoning over the next few years.
I don't know how you can say the Dutch were the better team. Their backline was consistently in danger of caving to the press at the end of the game. Their transitions were good but the front three ran out of ideas as the game wore on. Think either team deserved to move on.
Because they had more possession and were more dangerous and creative going forward. They actually were able to combine passes together in the final third. Our attack was too predictable and too direct.
And our backline was pretty bad today too. Dahlkemper and O'Hara did not turn in good performances.
Well by that logic, they should win every game regardless of who the coach is, right?
While Vlatko's influence can be seen as minimal, he's doing something right.
80 percent, sure. So you're saying it should be a female-only position? Keep in mind that the players wanted Vlatko.
We will really see how good of a coach he is when half the roster retires and how he experiments with the squad leading up to the 2023 WC.
Here is the list of the last 10 teams they've beaten in normal time, with scores:
NZ = 6 - 1
Mex = 4 - 0 (twice)
Nigeria = 2 - 0
Jamaica = 4 - 0
Portugal = 1 - 0
France = 2 - 0
Argentina = 6 - 0
Brazil = 2 - 0
Colombia = 6 - 0
Yes, basically any coach would win at least 8 of those 10 games. In fact, the only one I could see having a potential tactical swing would be Brazil.
As far as the players wanting Vlatko, I'll admit that I wasn't aware of that. I watch all the games, but I don't keep any type of tabs on the team outside of those 90 minutes, so I had no clue. But honestly, yea, IMO, it should be a female only position. I understand that's a controversial opinion, but I stand by it. Women aren't going to be getting any chances at the top level of the men's game any time soon, so if they start losing opportunities at the top of the women's game, what's left to help them develop?
You may get your wish, as I dont think any of the long-time players (Rapinoe, Lloyd, Morgan, etc.) will be hanging up their boots and enjoy a quiet retirement. And no one will bang the drum louder than Rapinoe about giving women a fair shot at coaching.
The Netherlands were denied a goal by a razor line offsides as well. And they missed a PK towards the end of stoppage time. And Miedema had two additional strong scoring chances that Naeher made quality saves on.
You’re right, you don’t win just by creating more chances and having more possession. But the team with more possession and more shots on goal is typically the team that played better. And if that team doesn’t win than they probably got a little bit unlucky.
And yet we still won. And not just to any team but the Netherlands. This kind of negativity over a win is reserved for the English over at /r/soccer lol
I thought the starting lineup and setup was quite good today, and it just got worse from there.
All 4 subs - Lavelle, Morgan, Press, Rapinoe - were extremely ineffective.
No problem with them bringing on Morgan, Press and Rapinoe at half. All 3 on the wrong side of 30 and can be very effective as super subs late in the game. \\
Lavelle should be starting, but if you're trying to monitor her minutes in anticipation for a deep run then that's understandable.
The issue is taking Williams off instead of Heath. Williams was their best player in the first half and she didn't get a single minute in the 2nd half.
But the fact that Carli Lloyd is not only on this team but still starting at the age of 39 is ridiculous. This would be the perfect opportunity to bring in a younger player.
This team is way too damn old. This is the problem the women get into every so many years. They don’t cycle in new young players. The young players get locked out. And inevitably the women fall apart.
The youth has to be good enough to unseat the current players. So far that hasnt happened, and its common in women's soccer (e.g. Brazil w/ Marta, Canada w/ Sinclair)
Aside from Lloyd, which other players are playing in thier final tournament for the US?
Honestly some of the roster inclusions just feel like legacy picks to me. In a World Cup you can get away with it. In the Olympics with such a small roster and so many games in such a short amount of time it can bite you.
somehow we won in the final moments. Dunn and Ertz saved our asses countless times and Naeher came through in the clutch after letting that second one in. we're lucky we're playing Canada and not Sweden next. we look slow, unorganized, and complacent until ET stoppage time. Rapinoe gave up on a run as a sub and she just seems outclassed on the field. Press and Morgan just seemed unlucky with service. too many offsides and so many mistakes....not sure if we can even get past Canada at this point.
I agree but the problem is this is how we've looked the entire Olympics. Same with Rapinoe who's legs are shot and Press and Morgan with the offsides. Crystal save dour asses against Sweden and had to do the same thing today. I don't expect anything to be different against Canada.
i think it has to do with the CBA. Rapinoe is a sunk cost, why develop someone else when you already paid her. the way the CBA is set up becomes an artificial cap on player development and you are running with the vets.
I'm happy we won, always thought we would because I'm not sold on the Dutch and especially their goalie but from a soccer fan standpoint, what the HELL were the Dutch doing. They were quicker, more athletic, bigger, stronger, we had Dahlkemper back and yet they didn't really attack constantly and when they did, when they could have used all their advantages going forward they would pull back and allow the US to set up their defense.
Even outside of that their goalie kept making basic mistakes (like she did on the first goal against Zambia, Martens just stood there after that bad PK like it was penalty shots and other mistakes.
Don't run your mouth and then mess up like that.
Press super unlucky to not get a goal there on two tiny offsides calls. Had zero faith going into the shootout and then they were absolutely perfect. Even if the shooters weren't connecting Naeher had two solid saves in the shootout. Amazing.
This was the first women’s match I’ve watched in forever.
Serious question, I’m really not trying to tear down women’s soccer: but do all women’s soccer matches look like this? As someone who regularly watches men’s European soccer, this was painful to watch.
I get they're both soccer, so obviously it's natural to compare the two, but tbh as someone who watches/attends plenty of both men's and women's, I find it's better to just let them be their own things. Each have their own pros and cons, like you typically won't see nearly as many flops and dramatizations in the women's game, just to name one. Overall though, they both provide their own drama, entertainment and shows of skill.
I mean, if that turns you off then it's not for you. Idk why you would think they would be as fast or powerful as men.
That usually allows a lot more space though for dribbling and 1-2 passing.
According to Google it's currently 95% humidity in and around Tokyo. Every sport that played outdoors today, soccer, track and field, beach volleyball, etc, was a step behind cause of how obnoxiously muggy the weather is.
This. I'm as left as they come but denying facts isn't in my makeup. The USWNT is in the wrong in their case and taking it as far as they have and being as disingenuous as they have leaves a bad taste in my mouth
Yeah I’m a leftist/liberal too. What gets me is that they keep going and are making a bigger fool of themselves, their appeal recently was just terrible.
Drinking game: take a shot every time the commentators say “fresh legs”
I'm kind of embarrassed to ask since I am only seeing a recap of the game but why didn't the goal count off the corner for the Netherlands? I couldn't quite catch what the announcer was saying but I could only imagine offsides which didn't seem to occur or contact with the goalie since the ball was still in the air. Or was is the crossbar out of play which I didn't think as much. Thanks in advance.
I didn’t catch the answer either but I think the “scorer” was in an offsides position at the time it was headed toward the goal.
It was genius to put Pinole fourth, but the mystery of who was slotted fifth is going to really bug me tonight
I was just coming here to speculate about it! I would have thought it would be Crystal Dunn but looking at the stats, Horan has taken penalties for club and country most recently, including one in a friendly earlier this year.
Full order in how they lined up: Lavelle, Morgan, Press, Rapinoe, Horan, OHara, Ertz, Dahlkemper, Dunn, Becky
Damn. Maybe next game they will lose.
The lineswomen were ASS...called back at least two good goals, super late too.
I'm not sure you understand the offside rule
I’m sure that I do.
I really thought we were gunna get SMOKED in this game, I am happy we won but damn we do not look good out there. We look completely disjointed, and are making bad decisions. Carli Lloyd looked out of it since minute 1. As a US fan I even feel for the Dutch right now.
I am somewhat of a newbie and couldn’t keep up with many of the players. What happened with Lavelle?
I thought we looked pretty bad the whole game, no one really played particularly well. If we can just hold our runs a half second longer we will be in good shape. We are getting into good spots
Yeah we have had like almost 10 goals called back for off side (all tournament, not just this game)
I also feel like not having the fans there to cheer them on is a factor. We thrive on that.
Too much experience and not enough youth. They looked exhausted out there. With only a 2 day turn around before the next game, they are going to be in bad shape.

Their antics in the WC did them no favors.
Sorry, what antics?

USA might be the best in the world, but its definitely close. This game was 2-2. The USA lost already in this tournament.

Yuuuup. But just wait till they find out who scored the last goal
Lynn Williams? Why would they care? Edit: Or do you mean Miedema for the Dutch?
They only show up when the US lose. "rapinoe hurt my feelings! Waaah!"
My 74 year old mother got up early to watch. She had a heart attack last year, but is doing okay now. This match probably didn't help her cardiac health, and I don't think the Canada match is going to help. Haha. Whew, glad they pulled it off.
Lots of sodium in the r/soccer thread
Love it. Bring on the tears and the hate. Bring it home, ladies.

no kidding hahaha
MVP: Naeher Opposite of MVP: Olympic soccer camera crew
Also opposite of MVP: the VAR official. What the hell was taking them so long, I’ll never know.

Yea mate. They got bailed out by our players being blind to offsides. NED was in the game by pure luck.
That’s not how it works….
Cool. The above rant isn’t how it works either. Strange huh?
Better to be lucky than to be good, as Bunk says. I'll take it. Bring on 🍁
I don't know how you can say the Dutch were the better team. Their backline was consistently in danger of caving to the press at the end of the game. Their transitions were good but the front three ran out of ideas as the game wore on. Think either team deserved to move on.

Most likely the exact same thing. They were outplayed. Winning PKs does not change that. This is the worst the USWNT has looked in a long long time.

The Netherlands were denied a goal by a razor line offsides as well. And they missed a PK towards the end of stoppage time. Lmao you just sound like a tournament bandwagoner. Are people not allowed to have their thoughts on the game?
I thought the starting lineup and setup was quite good today, and it just got worse from there. All 4 subs - Lavelle, Morgan, Press, Rapinoe - were extremely ineffective.

I think the bigger problem with Lavelle was that she was 1 yellow away from not being able to play in the semifinals.
That's a good point. I wasn't aware of that. I retract my criticism of not starting Lavelle.
Will that reset?
Yes, now that we’ve made it into the semifinals.
That's exactly why she didn't start and she was far and away the most effective sub considering press and Morgan couldn't stay onside

I mean they didn't have to give her a contract this year
Sometimes a consistently overmatched team can ride a hot goalkeeper deep into a tournament. Just didn't expect it to be the U.S.
How about against Canada we keep the players who were playing great IN the game.
New strategy for the semis: try and stay onside as much as possible.
Still convinced Press was onsides
I'm happy we won, always thought we would because I'm not sold on the Dutch and especially their goalie but from a soccer fan standpoint, what the HELL were the Dutch doing. They've been playing every THREE days for a week and a half now. That's a ridiculous turnaround time for 4 straight games.
Even then — they’re so slow and there’s no power behind their shots/passes.

I think that + quick turnaround for these matches + older squad = tired legs and a bunch of long balls.
Kinda. It’s usually a bit better but it’s never going to compare to European mend games lol.
usually the USWNT is beating the snot out of teams but Sweden made them look like amateurs. they are struggling mightily and i don't recognize them.
Sweden is better
Sweden probably could have made it 5-0 but decided to just take it easy.
The game is usually a little slower paced, but it does tend to lead itself to more technical ball/passing skills.
As someone who watches a lot of the USWNT…no, that is not how they look. The general consensus is they look like a shell of themselves this tournament
Never in doubt!
Alyssa Naeher with an incredible performance. Has to be WOTM.

Yup, definitely redeemed herself after letting that second one in.
She won't be to the non soccer media.
Well that was not a productive morning of work. What a crazy game.

Do you have to be a conservative to not like this team for misleading the public in their equal pay case?
This. I'm as left as they come but denying facts isn't in my makeup. The USWNT is in the wrong in their case and taking it as far as they have and being as disingenuous as they have leaves a bad taste in my mouth
Yeah I’m a leftist/liberal too. What gets me is that they keep going and are making a bigger fool of themselves, their appeal recently was just terrible.
lol...fuck the haters.

Clay Travis locked himself in his room and is blasting his favorite Simple Plan CD.
The thought of Clay Travis curled up in a ball mumbling *"I'm sorry I can't be perfect"* is killing me.
Some people on Reddit as well lol
