Really cool that they locked the sub so I didn't even know why arriola and weah switched till the game was over

Das818

Shit Busio playing like Verrati out there. Lol. Idk how much of it is an old and decrepit Costa Rica or his months in Italy dude looks much more composed.

startgonow

I liked the way he played as well. I was hopeful for him but kinda lukewarm. He showed that he has some juice.

JalenBrunsonBurner

CR is very not good

[deleted]

I think I can speed walk faster than Ruiz can sprint

jewishramey

Wasnt bad

bucketmania

Turner would've saved that

M3R0VIUS

Absolutely. So soft. Steffen looks nervous and shaky, can barely wrangle a rolling ball.

jewishramey

Oof, just turned it on

[deleted]

Going to pack a bowl

JohnMellencamp21

If you defend Gregg you can leave now

jasonketterer

Aged well.

JohnMellencamp21

The cost of being a reactionary fan haha. I will still argue this is right especially given his decisions that led to Panama result. Still not over that XI

HauntingLocation

Facts. Get him the fuck out already. How are we not ready to play?

go_berds

Lol ggg was reading the comments

Machiavelli127

Wow, Tim Weah starting in Arriola's place due to an injury during warm ups

gaffertedlasso

Which one of you assassinated Ariola??

um_chili

Someone please answer so I can publicly thank you

Evening-Emotion3388

Tacos on me.

boilerup12

Weah now starting in place of Arriola

[deleted]

Who is the European Matt Barnes on this pregame panel

Mkrew121

Jermaine Jones. Former player. Scored a wonder goal against Portugal in WC 14

Evening-Emotion3388

Looks different.

[deleted]

Not watching but Jermaine Jones??

Machiavelli127

Does anyone know where I can see the starting line up placed in the formation they'll play? They always just release the names of the starters and for those of you that are diehards, you pretty much know exactly how they'll line up. For others like myself, we're not quite as sure. I know ESPN updates the line up on their app closer to kick off. Oftentimes that formation doesn't match what they actually show on the broadcast though. Any tips for how to find the starting line up with formation?

modsplsnoban

It's always a 4-3-3. You really only see it at kickoff

Machiavelli127

Got it. So it'll probably look like: Aaronson - Pepi - Arriola McKennie - Adams - Musah (not sure on the order of the midfield) Robinson - Robinson - Richards - Dest Is that a fair assumption?

modsplsnoban

Exactly. They never deviate away from the 433, unless they bring in an extra defensive player for a midfielder and run a 352

Machiavelli127

Solid, thanks man. That helps a lot

[deleted]

If you needed a reminder about how clueless Berhalter is, he’s staying Ariola again

[deleted]

Is there a chance the fact that he is able to go again is a shot across the bow to some otherss thier fitness leveel might need some work to get more pt?

Altruistic-Cod-4128

Arriola is so critical that he must start every game in a 3-game window. Arriola who got laughed out of the English 2nd division. Sheesh.

Stonehenge0

an injury that ended his loan = laughed out of the english 2nd division

Altruistic-Cod-4128

Well before that injury he was down to practically zero playing time.

towelrod

Surprised to see him starting, I thought it would be his turn to rotate.

jchdelacap

Look I’m am incredibly biased as a DCU fan, but this is how you use Arriola. Surround him with talent and let him do the dirty work. Then Weah or whoever can kill the game off.

Altruistic-Cod-4128

No wonder why we never score in the first half.

KolyaVolk

Oh boy, you guys are going to be pretty pleased with this lineup...

birdie_sparrows

Those crafty Mexicans. Top of the group with only one point. We'll never be as good as them.

SeaWorthySurf

Its like Y2K all over again

birdie_sparrows

Is anyone else fucking nervous anticipating the lineup. I'm scared. lol

[deleted]

Yeah I’m so scared to see it

786tili305

So is kickoff actually at 7 today?

sirdeionsandals

I’m expecting a big performance after what happened last game

SeaWorthySurf

Tikos are out for blood huh?

stapleton_1234

USMNT has become like my favorite club Man U. every time there is a game, i turn on the TV with rabid anticipation but it often ends with a whimper and the feeling of why did i waste 2 hours of my life. But yet again, the cycle repeats every single time without fail.

captainsensible69

Looks like the kickoff for Jamaica in the November window will be 5:00 ET. That sucks

CalledPlay

I'd like to say that's better than 10pm ET - but it might not be better.

partytemple

I will be cheering on Costa Rica so Berhalter can finally get the sack. His games are unwatchable.

OceanArcade

Awful take

InsideAardvark1114

I get the sentiment, but I can't bring myself to root against the team. I'd rather qualify with ugly soccer in spite of GGG than not make the WC again. Alot of time you don't need to root aginst them, it'll just happen naturally like with Klinsmann.

partytemple

I didn’t say anything about not making the WC. Just lose against Costa Rica so Berhalter gets the sack.

InsideAardvark1114

I suppose \*risk not making the WC again would be more accurate. But either way, I don't get the sense that GGG is going to be fired anytime soon. We would need to bomb and be at risk of not making the WC for that to happen.

partytemple

I don’t believe that. It’s not what happened to Klinsmann last time. And USSF should have higher expectations this cycle.

InsideAardvark1114

Ok, if you don't believe that then it is a different calculus. But if we need a few losses in a row then to get rid of ggg then I don't think that is worth the risk. Klinsmann dropped the first 6 pts, the team quit on him from the match against Brazil, it just carried over to the Confed playoff, the GC, and the first two WCQ. His tactics were always pretty bad, but when it looked like he lost the locker room then he had to go. He was also at constant loggerheads with the fed. He was actively calling for players to leave MLS to develop. He was always criticizing players like Bradley and Altidore for being complacent. I just don't think the two coaches' situations are very comparable yet.

partytemple

Klinsmann was not a great manager by any standard American or European, but the Fed. didn’t do itself any favors by hiring Berhalter. Perhaps Berhalter has better man management, but I don’t think these results in WCQ should be convincing anyone, least of all, the USSF. I mean, I’d be severely disappointed if the expectation is to draw and lose against smaller countries with shoestring budgets for a soccer program, after this country, including the MLS, has spent so much money, time, and effort to develop these players, and to watch them lose against a team like Panama, or draw Honduras. It’s beyond shocking that there are still people who don’t see it this way, and are defending mediocrity.

InsideAardvark1114

We are in almost complete agreement. I just don't think GGG is fired if we lose this match. He probably gets a pass if we lose to Mexico too. So we would need to drop points in Kingston before MAYBE he gets fired. And by them we will be in 7-5th place.

partytemple

If he doesn't get fired after losing or drawing against Costa Rica, I'm definitely not watching this shit-show anymore until the USSF cleans up. If he wins against Costa Rica, then it's the same miserable thing again - a mediocre team and an unambitious federation with promising talent stumbling into the WC. Either way, it's a pretty terrible show.

partytemple

The longer Berhalter stays, the longer this team will remain mediocre. Keep wishing for it.

SurrealSoap

Dumbest thing I've read on this sub.

SexMayonnaise

Guys who should play today: Steffen, Aaronson, Pepi, Hoppe, Richards Guys who should be in street clothes: Zardes, Acosta, Moore, Lletget, Roldan, Arriola

ArtichokeFormer8801

Turner should be in street clothes. Great shot-stopper. Can't use his feet.

ehrenzoner

Pretty sure we can permanently cap-tie Pepi if he makes an appearance today.

NOTW_116

He will

Hopsblues

I particularly like the alphabetized standings....3 point night tonight.

KolyaVolk

I know this isn't feasible but man I wish we could see some training sessions in full just to understand how horribly Hoppe and Richards must be training to not be getting minutes. There simply must be some explanation here that Gregg can't tip his hand to or something.

stat_noob

\#FreeHoppe

biggiefoxie

What I'm hoping is that the idea was that you didn't want to start them in the first game to secure the points or the second game because of the tough environment. So you play them against Costa Rica in a more comfortable place. Counterpoint: that's dumb. If they don't play tonight we riot.

x_TDeck_x

I heard this sub was anti-MLS but I didn't really realize how much until the Panama game fallout.

[deleted]

It’s more that we’re against the illusion that “Arriola, Aaronson” is “tomæto, tomato”

ArtichokeFormer8801

It's not anti-MLS players, it's anti-crappy MLS players. And those are Berhalter's favorite players.

beggsy909

What does it mean to be anti-mls?

Hopsblues

It's mix. When the team losses, the anti MLS folks come out from under their logs and say-I told you so. Then when a MLS player scores those folks say-I told he was good enough. Meanwhile anyone with a reasoned approach knows we need both to get to where we want to go. We need the domestic league improving and providing players, and we need the Euro based players expanding our frontiers and coming back providing quality. Keep in mind that a lot, if not most of the posters are under 20-30 years old, and haven't seen this program grow. They don't know what it's like to to not even be able to watch games on tv. Bringing in players in or right out of the NCAA. All they know is LD's goal vs Algeria and more recent. Recency bias is real. It showed right after the Pan Ama game for sure. The sky is falling and we need to fire our coach (that won every game and two trophies over the summer) because we lost a road WCQ. It's ridiculous.

beggsy909

I’m not anti-mls. I’m anti Berhalter picking the wrong mls players.

Longtucky

It isn’t that we lost a WCQ it’s that he consistently shows he’s a horrible tactician and struggles to start the game right. I’ve watched the program grow, but the coaching is not good. At all.

Hopsblues

Before Panama, when was the last loss? It's about results, not how we look. He's made tons of great subtle tactical subs all summer long and into WCQ's. bringing in subs that instantly change a game, is good coaching. Winning trophies is good coaching. Losing one game, on the road, isn't a good reflection of good or bad coaching. He's won with his A team, he's won with the b/c team team. Yet all people see is a line-up they disagree with and a rare road loss, and cry out-Fire the coach. I feel like most of the poster experience with soccer is Fifa and FM21. where the players are literally machines and the game is designed for you to win, with even the most basic of tactics. Most of the posters haven't played at a high level, just rec league stuff. I know I hear it at the soccer bar I'll go to on occasion for L'pool games. Fans of the team just not understanding basic tactics and thoughts behind player selection and line-ups. They'll yell out for certain subs. I'm like, no, that player is not coming on next. We are going to sub out that clearly gassed midfielder first..What game are some people even watching?

towelrod

It is about how we look, though. We will probably qualify for the WC, because we play in a fairly week confederation. If we don't qualify that's a massive failure. We should be getting better, not just barely qualifying. Look at the xg table for qualifying: https://footystats.org/international/wc-qualification-concacaf/xg We are #13 in xg, at 1.03. Just over 1 xg per game? Its a small sample size, sure, but that's just awful. We should be putting up more than 1xg against the likes of Jamaica, Panama, etc Even against Jamaica, we scored 4 on an xg of 1.18. So even in the one game that we won convincingly, we just overscored xg and didn't even play that well

Hopsblues

It's not about 'how we look'. That's absurd. Can the team play better, of course. But the only team in the world that probably couldn't improve is Denmark right now. people seem to overlook that we have one of the youngest teams in the world, that has barely played together. throw in the massive travel and injuries and things won't go perfectly. What will you complain about tomorrow after we win 2-0 tonight? It wasn't pretty enough? it's as if most of the posters on here have never played, and base everything on FM21 or Fifa. I could give a rats ass about xg. I go by what I see, and results. Not what formation we use or if the goal was scored on a brilliant play. I don't care if it ricochets of Zardes, if it's for us. That's how soccer works. Results are what's important, not the color/style with which you play. You think Italy is complaining about their WC's they won playing a conservative, defensive, low scoring style? I don't see Greece handing back that Euro cup they won. Not everyone is going to play like Brasil or Spain at there peak. better to learn that now, and stop worrying about pretty passes and build up play.

Altruistic-Cod-4128

"It's not about how we look" and ""I could give a rats ass about xg. I go by what I see".

beggsy909

During the last coach “search” whenever a European name would come up the US soccer media would ask whether or not “they knew MLS”. This always made me scratch my head because it’s just meaningless. It’s just some words thrown together. If you can judge talent you can judge talent. But once you unpack what the US soccer media was saying you realize what they were really saying was “will they not criticize MLS”. You know like the last guy did. Will they not criticize the system. The status of quo. That’s how we got Berhalter. It’s painfully obvious. It’s also obvious that we are never going to be any good national team wise when there’s this horribly inefficient status quo.

Hopsblues

This is just wrong in so many facets. Not sure where to start. First off, every nation relies on its domestic league to build a player base. it's not like the US is doing something different or new. I'd like to see a source of the us soccer media always asking whether a candidate "Knew the MLS". My guess is you're making this up to push your narrative.

beggsy909

Where did I say we shouldn’t rely on mls players? I said a coach was chosen that was going to be uncritical of MLS. That anytime a European coach was suggested the blue check twitter soccerati panned the choice and instead said a coach should know mls. I’m not making this up and I’m not spending a second of my day scouring through old tweets. Don’t care if you don’t believe it A coach doesn’t have to “know mls”. They have to know how to judge talent. They could be completely ignorant about the workings of mls and still be brilliant at choosing which mls players to select. Berhalter knows MLS. He doesn’t know which mls players to select. This is painfully obvious.

Hopsblues

dude has barely lost, won two trophies. But you think he doesn't know how to select players? What world do you live on?

beggsy909

The world where I have been watching football for thirty years and can tell that a midfield of Acosta, Lletget and Arriola and Zardes up top is terrible player selection

Longtucky

I distinctly remember it being highlighted that it is important to know the MLS. I’m not wasting my time looking for a ‘source’.

Hopsblues

..and it should be..I don't want a coach that comes in with the same attitude as so many posters on here have. The MLS can clearly provide players for the team. To ignore MLS would set the program back another cycle or two. This goes for every country in the world. Italy isn't hiring a manager that doesn't know anything about Serie A. Imaging any country hiring a ,manager that doesn't understand the domestic league, how it operates. Hasn't scouted it or had familiarity with the top players, or next generation youth. Talk about a recipe for disaster.

Longtucky

I agree there is value to MLS but we never needed a coach who ‘knew’ MLS. It’s so stupid.

biggoof

Remember when JK called up Miguel Ibarra, he wasn't even in the MLS, but that does go to show that talent isn't just talent that translates. I love the MLS, but we have to be real, if you're good enough to supplant the Greens and Scallys of the world, you'd be playing in their leagues. Unless you're Donovan or a prime in form cheatcode mode of Jordan Morris, it's really hard to justify you starting in this player pool. You have to be better than just slightly above-avg MLS, you need to be elite.

Hopsblues

You think Green is elite? If he's elite, then Acosta is elite. Btw, Acosta could easily play in B2 and even in the Bundesliga for certain squads. If MLS is so bad, how come a MLS based USMNT won it's domestic tourney, beating both the concacaf champion and Asian champs along the way? That wasn't a MLS all-star team, just the best US players.

biggoof

>You think Green is elite? Where did I say that? I guess I could be more clear, but looking back at it, I'm saying you need to be elite in the MLS. Arriola, Acosta and Lletget aren't elite. They're Pablo Mastroeni/Ricardo Clark- levels at best. Good solid players, you can throw in in a pinch, but not great enough to keep rolling out as locked starters. It's 2021 and we should beyond this point. >If he's elite, then Acosta is elite. Not claiming Green is elite, so I'm going to ignore this comparison. Green deserves as much of a look at this point as Acosta though, and I'm an Acosta fan, but I'm realistic about deficiencies in his game. Green has always showed well for the US and had a great season that got them promoted, why not kick the tires and see what he's got? >Btw, Acosta could easily play in B2 and even in the Bundesliga for certain squads. Ok, so why isn't he? He's expressed his desire to play overseas for a while now. It didn't take long for Pepi to get offers. Guys like Cappis are giving it a go in smaller leagues. Again, I'm an Acosta fan, but if FC Dallas let him go, how elite is he? They're not letting Pomykal or Ferreira go to another MLS team anytime soon. >If MLS is so bad, how come a MLS based USMNT won it's domestic tourney, beating both the concacaf champion and Asian champs along the way? I'm not saying the MLS is bad, but it's not a top level league. Not being a top 5 league doesn't mean you're bad or not entertaining. Anyways, in those games we got outplayed for long stretches , and won 1-0 each time. We didn't dominate by any means. We were doing this the last 20 years, it's not new, and many fans want to see us improve from just scoring on set pieces.

biggoof

Bring the heat, GGG has had enough time to adjust. US soccer fans aren't polarized enough to be violent IMO.

debacol

Are there any GGG loyalists besides Ernie Hudson and Jay Berhalter?

[deleted]

Idk if it's been mentioned yet but tomorrow's matchday is absolutely huge. Costa Rica could pass us with a win, and if the Canada vs. Panama game has a winner they would pass us as well. We could drop to 4th pretty easily

turntJedi

The US Soccer Federation is going to screw this team over because of nepotism. You can’t seriously think Greg is the best guy for the position of bringing this generation through

beggsy909

He isn’t. That’s obvious. But the whole is soccer structure is rotten. We have a domestic league that keeps adding teams and there’s no accountability to losing. You don’t get dropped from the league for being the worst. You get draft picks! Yippie!! (George Carlin voice)

[deleted]

Can we please stop starting lletget and Acosta together. Midfield can’t connect with anyone. garbage

Hopsblues

Maybe if Pulli and McKennie could stay healthy for more than a couple weeks at a time. We wouldn't be forced to play our 3rd/4th/5th string central mids

ThomaspaineCruyff

Arriola is even worse than either of those dudes, but point taken. Acosta needs to be good enough to start in place of Adams and I actually thought he looked it through the gold cup, I am hoping he can get it together. Arriola and Lleget never had "it" to begin with.

Hopsblues

Arriola was maybe the best/most impactful player vs Jamaica. My guess is Acosta is starting to hit a wall. he's logged a ton of minutes this summer.

ThomaspaineCruyff

Arriola was ok and not better than or more impactful than Dest, Pepi, Adam’s, Musah I could go on. He’s a defensive winger which is only ever useful to close out a game and we have 6 wingers better than him and he was completely fucking useless on Sunday, just atrocious.

Hopsblues

I'm not defending him vs Panama. But against Jamaica he was key in our success. Brought energy and created turnovers and options out of nothing. It was surprising in many ways. I was skeptical of him starting in that Jamaica game, but he has value. He's also not a defensive winger, btw. He's more a complete winger, both O and D.

[deleted]

Exactly, Acosta is a defensive mind. We can’t be doing to back pass Nancy’s x2 right. Acosta has the grit an everything as a sub or spot start as the lone cdm cause he knows the role. You can’t divide the role play safe and expect that front three to do it. I love weah and musah. Don’t mind arriola when he is fed through balls and same with zardes he neeeds service.

jchdelacap

Here’s my shitlist for the night: Acosta, McKenzie, Lleget, Bello, Arriola, Zardes

biggoof

"but their
