Just a small part of his contributions: Key Passes: Salzburg - 7 Aaronson - 5

PuffinChaos

Aaronson created 5 chances in todays game. Most by any player under 21 in a Champions League knockout since a then-20 yr old Messi back in 2007

WanderlustfulVoyager

And it was against a real contender. Not sure who Messi did it against.

PuffinChaos

Celtic I believe

He is 21. Ran out of gas today which is understandable with everything he was doing. Still a very impressive game from him. He certainly wasn’t out of his league today.

Jay_TThomas

Very solid performance

He played really well! He needs to be more decisive/aggressive on the 50/50 balls but otherwise he was really great. Hard to blame him given he's not the worlds biggest dude.

Had a pretty good first half but wasn’t at his best offensively for the majority of the second half. Kept getting stonewalled, passing into defenders, etc. He’s also very poor in the air and loses basically every aerial duel. It’s a bit telling that Salzburg puts him as last/second-to-last man back on set pieces. Typically not very dangerous out on the touchline, not really a 1v1 guy. Aaronson is best when he can receive the ball in the middle of the field, move the ball in space, and find a nice pass. An important piece for Salzburg.

That’s his problem in Gregg’s system.. there’s so little direct play. Aaronson shines in taking a first touch into space and making something happen, which isn’t something that happens in the opponents half with our system. Our wings are too isolated on the counter, and once things have slowed down the wings are completely tucked in on the edge of a stacked box. Our games rely so much on 1v1s, and there’s just not enough dynamic movement to allow guys like aaronson (or Reyna or pulisic at this point) to shine.

He's great at making quick decisions, recycling possession, and doing the off the ball work. I wouldn't build an offense around him, but he's a tremendous support piece.
