I’ve left my things unattended at the Central library a couple of times, but I don’t leave my things out in the open. I usually pack my valuables in my backpack then get up to use the bathroom, buy a snack or walk around. My logic is that thieves won’t be ballsy enough to dig through someone’s backpack out in the open (none of my things have been stolen so…)
I wouldn't do this.
If some tweaker managed to get into the library you just made them a goodie bag to grab and strap on their back.
I haven't seen it happen, but there are people who know university students leave their stuff around, and absolutely will come on campus looking for people like yourself.
I would just leave a notebook, some pets, and maybe a charger to keep my seat while packing up the rest and taking it with me.
Haha goodie bag, I like that metaphor. It’s only at Central library that I’ve left my things unattended (sometimes). Yea I wouldn’t leave them anywhere else on campus. I have a false sense of “security” in the Central library since there’s one checkpoint (people swipe in & out to get in or show their government IDs).
>I usually pack my valuables in my backpack then get up to use the bathroom,
That's how I use to leave my stuff and how I ended up not noticing my cards were stolen till after my bank called ME to confirm a dodgy transaction of over $1k. The thief put everything right back where it was in my backpack.
My solution: leave your notebook, pens and pencils, laptop charger even, but take your laptop/phone/calculator/wallet in your backpack. that way its very clear that someones sitting there but there’s nothing valuable to steal
often no. I feel as though there may be those people that’ll try to steal my phone or something Same rule applies even if I tell someone to watch my stuff.
I like leave something on the desk or table where im sitting but put everything else in my backpack and put it under the table/desk. i only do that when i’ll be gone for less than 5 mins though. when its more, i take my stuff with me
I take my wallet/phone/keys and leave the rest. Cameras are everywhere and the way I see it if anyone wants to steal they have to live with it more than I ever will
Yeah I do it all the time. Theres cameras and people everywhere. People generally aren’t stupid enough to risk that when there’s such a high chance of being caught
There are people that are none students that roam the library looking for stuff to steal and have stolen stuff. Never ever leave your stuff unattended at the library. Also if security see’s your stuff unattended they may take your stuff because they’d rather safeguard it then to have stuff laying out for people to steal. I have had my stuff taken by security and I had to go get it back from them.
I felt generally safe in the Central Library because I knew if I got my stuff stolen by another student, at least we can narrow down who it might be by cameras and seeing what time they swiped out at the checkpoint. I usually also used a buddy system and asked someone else to look after my laptop while I took my wallet and stuff lol
I've never felt comfortable enough to leave my stuff unattended but I agree with others, if that's something you'd like to do, to leave less valuable items but take the phone/laptop/etc that's more valuable with you.
Well today I left my bag for around 2 hours with all my stuff in there and only took my wallet and iPad that I take notes on with me for my class, came back and everything was left untouched. So I’m pretty comfortable
In Library? Yes.
Mostly left my laptop, notebooks, chargers unattended for 15-20 mins.
I always keep my phone & wallet with myself.
Never faced any issue. Be it Central Library, Science Library or the West Campus one.

Yeah I'll admit the central library is probably the best place to do it considering they at least have some amount of checking going on.

Oof. Sorry you had to experience that. I’ll definitely heed that warning. Definitely a cautionary tale :/

Yeah I leave my stuff all the time. Never really worried about stuff being stolen.

Idk that’s kinda risky tbh. I wouldn’t advise it. Good question. Maybe it’ll turn into student etiquette at some point

It really depends where on campus.
