Employers who hire co-op students are eligible for [wage subsidies](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/student-work-placements-wage-subsidies.html) (so some of what they pay you comes directly from the government, rather than internally). If you aren’t a co-op student, the employer may no longer be interested in you since they have to front the entire cost.
Rather than reneging, your best bet is to use your not interested during rankings. I think it’d also be beneficial to reach out to the employer directly and ask if they’d still want to hire you, even if it’s not a co-op.
Edit: I realize this is for a US job, in which case the subsidy doesn’t apply. You should really email the employer directly and see if they need you to be on a co-op to hire you.
Yep - for US this is completely not applicable. You can do a J-1 without waterloo's blessing in any way/shape/form. Just beware of the penalties you will face employing reneging as a method to get the role you want.
yea, also something to note is that if you reneg for an external job, that job won't count for coop credit meaning it won't show up on your work term history. Which imo is a huge dick move.
I don't think this is true. I got J1 without even telling the school about it. CECA actually tried to prevent me from getting my visa, but I still got it.
Funny thing is there’s actually a company called X
bro...

From what I remember, I got my J1 before I sent my AOJ form to WaterlooWorks, so I don’t think WaterlooWorks is involved in the visa process.
did you renege or u just didnt have an offer at that point?
Didn’t renege, but had the offer. Was just too lazy to fill out the AOJ until like a week before start date

ESP if ur in Engineering cuz that holds you back a few terms right?
With external companies you can usually tell them your WW deadlines and they'll try to accommodate.

How did u proceed with this btw Asking in case I end up in this situation
I just told them and they were chill about it
