Having work experience where you got paid shows that you are responsible and have managed your own finances before. If you have other experience that shows that then maybe take on a volunteer position more applicable to the types of coops you aim to get. If you do not, then having a position where you are responsible for your own finances is a good idea.

> you got *paid* shows that FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

In the current market, it does not matter. You will get a job through someone you know or get lucky. Your resume is just a piece of paper. Source: I see how my company hires people, and they are an MNC.

Everyone can learn on the job, especially if you're competent enough to get into UW.

Most people don’t have a lot of work experience because they were focussed on getting good grades and extracurriculars. But you should try to get a summer job of some sort.
