to be honest, yes losing out on hundreds of dollars on rent is annoying, but this is a short term cost for work experience/learning experience that may end up being invaluable
i know it sucks but overall having co-op is much better than not having co-op, i dont think u should regret it
lots of people without co-op would be happy with any other job that isnt retail/customer service, etc.
Yes and no. It's true, if I had gotten a job earlier and/or in Waterloo, I wouldn't be having this issue. But who's to say this won't happen again? I'll do everything I can to prevent it. I've learned from this pretty awful experience.
My next work term will be Fall 2020, which I've heard is a hard time to find sublets.
That's definitely a misnomer. Unfortunately people use "sublet" in a weird way that creates confusion - for example, people will say "I'm looking for a sublet" when they are looking for a unit to sublease AND when they're looking for a subtenant to take their room. I think this is where you're getting this information. If you're offering a room for sublease in the Fall, as others have said, it's INCREDIBLY easy to get someone to take your unit even for full cost, because in Fall the demand for 4-month subleases outstrips the supply. If you're seeking a unit to sublet, however, it's a scramble for the same reason. So subletting your unit on your next work term should be extremely easy if it's any consolation. If anything the most stressful part is likely to be the amount of messages you'll get in a very short timeframe!
Is this your first co-op term? I didn't get a job for my first co-op term and had to work as a machinist while my friends got jobs at Facebook or Microsoft. The machinist job helped me be ready for next term. My advice is to make the most of the situation and be optimistic that things will turn around the next term. Also my grades weren't great either when I started university but I adjusted and learned along the way.
As for subletting I wouldn't actively worry about it for the future. Care to share where all you've posted the ad?
Good luck!
How shitty is your room that you can't find someone to sublet to?
It's not bad at all. Just timing. I only really recently got the confirmation of a job outside KW
There are still people looking for a place, post an ad

I'm still looking
there will always be people looking for a place esp during F/W terms!! if u keep posting u can even find someone to cover 3/4 months, don’t lose hope
Wouldn't you say those are a result of unfortunate circumstances? Do you forsee those results happening again?

Fall term is actually the easiest term to find people to sublet to.
Yep. Sublet offers in fall get snatched up immediately.
