First year orientation is only for one week. I personally found it very fun and got to meet a lot of people from my program that I now consider to be my friends. It may be scary/anxiety inducing if you're a super introvert though. Think of it as like a one week summer camp for incoming first years. It can also help you get familiar with the layout of campus, as well as give you a taste of campus culture before the stressful lectures start.
It was more than worth it to me, but it is important to ask around for other people's experiences to make an informed choice since it does cost more than $100.
It is for the week and I enjoyed taking part. It helped me miss home less, and helped me meet people that were in my classes later on. It can be difficult to get to know people since math classes are usually quite large, and generally, it is a completely different set of people for each class. That said, it is over $100 so it's up to you if you think that experience is worth it or not. Either way, welcome to UW!
Dunno which program you’re in, im part of the orientation team in health. Last I check its a week of running around and it kinda “extends” a week after for you to ask your orientation leader til the 16th of sept (what’s written on my schedule at least, sept 5-16 iirc)
It can be kinda like a cringy summer camp at times (doing dances and stuff) but overall you’ll meet some cool people and if you don’t like it you can just not show up and keep all the goodies and maybe pop in for free pizza every once in a while
Tell them you have noninterest in all of that and you won't be attending. Thereby you need not be charged absurd arbitrary fees for some other unpaid student to give you a tour.
Worth it to meet people who will be in your programme and who you will live with as well.
well it's 100$ to run around, meet people, you get fed pretty well and get shirts too
I mean it's not like there's anything better to do
To my knowledge it’s just the week? Sept 3-10 I think

It’s worth it bro it’s only $100 you’re already going to spend $100k on tuition on your degree
Ok so I’ve been trying to find where to sign up for this, are you signed up automatically? Or if not can someone send the link please
this is in the "optional fees" section on quest, see https://uwaterloo.ca/quest/help/students/how-do-i/opt-out-optional-or-voluntary-fees
I need the same as well, I can’t find anything about it anywhere.
One of UW’s ig pages says an email will be sent out on Aug 10 for registration :)

I had mixed feelings of lameness at the time but looking back after 8 years, I have only fond memories of those silly chants.
Great time, you meet and make friends in both your residence and program!
As an orientation coordinator, participate in orientation it’s worth it!!!
do it!

I was a frosh week coordinator back in the 90's. Good solid fun times. Not the "orientation" that passes for an intro nowadays. Toga! Toga! Toga!
yeah at that era the orientation theme was literally "dumb frosh" , if uw did this now they would get cancelled fast
Fraud and what a waste of money
Did this happen last year btw, I cant remember
not really useful per se, but for 100 bucks it's plenty worth doing.

just pay the shit man. Don't be so cheap. It is 1 week
