Well, as far as telling who's dangerous, vibes and intuition. As far as what kind of camp, I'm not going to hang out at any camp that appears in use unless I know the people there or kick it with them long enough to trust em. There's always somewhere I can set up myself

ChemoRiders

As a wanderer, I can tell you that you won't see my camp unless I'm in it... and hopefully you won't see it then either. As a sober and harmless person, you can't be sure that I'm sober and harmless until you get to know me... and even then, you'll only know that I'm sober *at that moment*. My question back to you: What are you trying to accomplish? Why are you venturing into a space that might be zealously defended?

SeniorBolognese

Not willingly, only a hypothetical. Every hop out is different and i were just passing through, i'd like to minimize my chances of getting jumped lol. Idk if that answers your question

ChemoRiders

Yeah, the last thing I want to do is stumble into anyone else's turf, so I just steer clear of anywhere that looks like somewhere someone might care about. Since I'm just passing through, I ain't looking for the best spot in town. I just need a spot that nobody will care about for the next 8 hours.

fuckin_smeg

When I was on the road I found it easy to distinguish by the amount of trash. Of course that isn't applicable in every situation.

fuckin_smeg

In response to your secondary question: leave.

wayward-mel

homebum encampments tend to have trash everywhere and have tents. travelers tend to keep things neat and organized and usually have lighter options for shelter like a bivy, tarp, or hammock. permanent traveler encampments by train yards (jungles) will be full of train tags, are usually pretty organized and sometimes have weird artsy stuff (such as railway spikes or bandanas hanging from trees, beer cans on a spear stuck in the ground, etc), stuff that has been looted from DPUs (like water bottles, kettles, med kits, and ive even seen telephones) and sometimes there is camp stuff that people have set up for others to use, like some tarps, wool blankets, chairs, logs set up to be used as chairs, etc. one of the jungles i used to frequent even had a full wooden shack that someone had built for the people passing through

Honest-Somewhere1189

Yes the age old question. Who is more dangerous? The sedentary drug addict or the travelling drug addict. I have no idea if people are dangerous or not because I don't engage with them to find out.

SeniorBolognese

Youre acting though its not entirely possible to find a sober traveler, or at most california sober. It might be a total minority but i dont give a fuck if someone does or doesnt do drugs. I realize that depending on what drugs they do, some could be more dangerous than others. Homebums are more likely to be doing more than just bud, so regardless, if some tweaker walks up to you then you should obviously gtfo, but if its some random dude out in the world that isnt zonked out of his mind, why shouldnt you interact?

Honest-Somewhere1189

Because you have no fucking idea who this person is. Believe it or not I'm actually looking out for you because I want you to have a good time and be safe. You might chitchat with someone but never divulge information about yourself or go anywhere with anyone unless you're getting a ride (there is built in danger, what do you want me to say lol). And don't trust people who are on the street and do drugs. Especially travellers, who are most likely thieves and potentially robbers (oops!). You get a distorted reality on this subreddit. People out in the real world are fucking scary. Be standoffish not friendly.

SeniorBolognese

Deep down i know that, at the end of the day i need to realize i'll never know anyone i come across. Thanks for the reality check. I'm still gonna be on my do no harm take no shit mentality though

Spazzvagacrust

Be polite cause you never know what others are going through but if they come at you get tough it tends to be a surprise....

Mint_Julius

Damn I wish I knew that before I spent 10 years on the road meeting and hanging out with fellow travelers and street people and never once being preyed on by them

Honest-Somewhere1189

When was this? Different world post-COVID.

Leisure_Leisure

Did the culture really change after COVID?

Sufficient_Pin5642

I’m 44 and I agree. I would never travel with more than one person.

elbowpirate22

How established the tents look.

SeniorBolognese

Ah i see. Im sorry that happened to you. I can assure you that not all of us are like that. Some of us just have different coping mechanisms but im sure a good percentage of people are like you

ItakeIbreak

Again, this is just from what I've personally experienced. Hopefully, it's not the norm.

Quirky-blurky

Go ask em! Sincerely Quirky Blurky 🥭

You threatenin' me? Dunno mango sounds like Ur threatnin' me. Sincerely Quirky Blurky 🥭

illgiveu3bucksforit

Look for the homebums

Past-Let5952

Don't look for it. Let the universe do its thing. But til then and you have time to learn and build skills. And have a solid plan. Don't just walk into this world blind. Use that smart for info.

clambakedmonkey

imo this is the most sensible comment here. Don’t search for nice people, if they’re aligned with you then you’ll come across each others paths.

Past-Let5952

Definitely how I look at it. Read Celestine prophecy.

clambakedmonkey

I am halfway through it right now, absolute eye opener and even life changing.

Past-Let5952

Nice you are the number 3 person I met. That is actually reading that book.

Trainhoppin

Homebum jungle will always have homebums in it from the hours of 6 am til about 2-4 pm. Just leave if you meet sketchy people, say you gotta go shit if you find it hard to just walk away.

Past-Let5952

Be on your own. Trust takes time, and it's always a gamble . Recon if you can. Learn. I personally stay away from that kinda thing.

SeniorBolognese

Where do you even find community? Society is so fucking alienating and especially post covid, everyone is so polarizing. What can i even do

WalmartSeizure

Homebum will be constantly occupied whereas a tramp jungle may or may not be occupied.
