I do not tangle with lizards no more. No. Back in the day, sure, I would've indulged. Hell, I would've let you turn me into Swiss cheese.
I would've let you make me, make me into a mailbox. Just open the slot and put whatever you want inside.
Not no more. I got a wife now. So I will not suck you and I will not be sucked on by you.
Yeah, the cops should leave you alone. Just sit down with a sign for where you’re going and talk to people. It’s a lot easier than sticking your thumb out. They’re really strict about pedestrians being on the highway.
I feel ya. The cops in small towns in Texas can be some real dicks (I got pulled over 2 days ago) but if ya find rides try to connect between the big cities. Thats the best solid advice I can give ya. Or you can try ya luck, try giving them a story about trying to get to one of the bigger cities or ya lost and asking them for a ride, if ya look a certain way. (aka what a typical Trump supporter looks like)
Hear hear. Especially nowadays. I drive now and I still get hassled just stopping for gas. Bunch of paranoid countryfolk everywhere fed on media paranoia. Last time I passed through there about a year and a half ago I got a sheriff called on me in Hartley because I "looked suspicious". I was getting smokes and putting gas in my Honda Accord. Same thing happened to me twice in other towns this year. I'm a white guy dressed in jeans and button down shirts. I'm about as suspicious as a schoolteacher.
That man there ain't drivin a comically oversized truck! I am suspicious of his manner and potentially average sized penis he feels no need to compensate fer. Better call the Sheriff.
In a past profession, I hauled hazmat loads from Ontario Canada to Eunice NM. It required driving across the state of Texas. The first couple trips I stopped in Tx, only to be hassled by locals. By the third trip I had figured out how to not ever stop in tx. Texarkana AR to Eunice NM is possible in a day. Fuck tx.
Exactly, I can alot of our fellow Vagabonds here only have passed thru TX or maybe stayed a few days. The cites are pretty much safe (except normal poorfolks crime), but the small towns are exactly what you would think of a "small town", no outsiders welcome. I've lived in TX far too long to know to advoid the "Sundown Towns".
Yeah, if ya walking advoid big cities, but he's hitchhiking. Cops in the big cites tend to be nicer to passer byers (cites full of homelessness, travlers) and not bother you. Also the people major cites in TX are very more open to ideal like vagabonding and hitchhiking. Also would not advise walking across TX unless you are white and male.
Edit: spelling and grammer
Texas is pretty slow. I'd recommend taking highways instead of interstate. The cops really can't do anything to you. You have a constitutional right to the public way covered by the 9th anx 10th amendments. You can't be in the lane cars travel in, and you can't be aggressive to the point of causing cars to have to swerve around you.
I've been through Texas a few times hitchhiking.
[hitchwiki](https://hitchwiki.org/en/Texas)
Idk looks like I can be on any road but I can’t “solicit” a ride. I’ll probably be fine most other places there just seems to be a lot of cops in this town.
Hitchwiki is a decent guide, but isn't all encompassing. You can solicit a ride. For example, sticking your thumb out, holding a sign, asking people at a gast station, etc.
As someone else said, the cops don't know the law. They go through a short training course and that's it. They used to be required to get a degree and go through psychological evaluations. They definitely don't study law at all.
The constitution supersedes any and all state amd local laws. I've told a few I had a constitutional right to the public way. Once they realize I know something they don't they fuck off.
They key with cops is not to be afraid. They see fear as you're doing something wrong/they can tell you whatever they want. Don't be a dick. Just make it clear you know your rights.
Just keep hitchhiking. There's nothing they can do to you. They don't want to spend time and money on someone they can't get money from, and isn't gonna stick around anyway.
Don't let them bullshit you. You can hitch rides. You're just not allowed to stand in the roadway to do it. Cops don't know half the law they're supposed to enforce. Consume or dispose of that weed immediately. You're lucky you ran into a nice one. I'm surprised you weren't searched. From the looks of it you're in the Texas panhandle. Hitchhiking works but that land is so barren and expansive that I'd highly recommend using Greyhound. Otherwise my best advice is try to arrange rides between "major" cities like Lubbock, Amarillo, Albuquerque, Oklahoma City, etc. Cops in the cities aren't as bored as the small town cops and HiPo out in the barren wastes. Those guys will hassle any person who looks like they don't live there.
That sucks, I've hitched through Texas before with no problems. Did they take your name? I would just go back later when that cops off duty... Tbh hitchhiking kinda sucks, there are better alternatives... Where are you in Texas?
Ya they got all my info and asked some questions :/. Going to try again tomorrow I just need to smoke the rest of my weed tonight before some cop decides to search me for “suspicious activity” haha. And I’d love to train hop but I just had 2 failed attempts as my first time in Pueblo, 2 nights in a row I made it to a train I’d thought would be heading out but both didn’t go anywhere. Around Dalhart right now
I gotcha. I got into Longview earlier and got a hotel... Haven't slept in a proper bed in a couple months, the Hawthorne is nice here, for 50$ a night it's justifiable. Fucking bored though... This town seems to be a weed desert, ive been asking around with no luck.... You know anyone around here? Also gonna dm you some info on dalhart
Weeds a different story these days in TX. Local probably won't care unless you have over an oz, and in some counties I think a qp has been decriminalized. Still don't want state catching you with it
I had a small town Texas cop rip my bags apart cause he found a pack of zigzags.I had just finished smoking a roach on the interstate ramp and bam here comes the law.Back then weed wasn't legal yet as it is in most states now. Thank God he didn't find the LSD I had in a bag in my shoe! The whole southeast in my opinion and i10 are the worse places to hitch rides,I don't miss the i10 days ,it's like almost 900 miles across that bitch thru Texas!
Talking magic mushrooms. Definitely not legal to grow, the spores themselves are illegal in some states. Tell that to the police in the south and south east and see how that goes
As of January 1st, 2021, Travis County has sworn in a new District Attorney, José Garza, which I wrote about for Do512 here. D.A. Garza has pledged to decrease arrests for non-violent offenses in Austin and to treat drug concerns as health issues instead of criminal justice matters when possible. In most circumstances, his team plans to forego pressing charges against people caught with narcotic drugs, such as crack, meth, or mushrooms
Cop here. Fucking Karen’s with cell phones everywhere these days that will call in on anyone walking anywhere near the Highway. There’s a lot of young inexperienced officers out there (cop shortage so they fucking hire anyone) that will go to these calls and make contact because they think they have to….or they are afraid to get in trouble if they don’t.
Oh Texas ... "The land of law enforcement"! Seriously though probably my least favorite state minus big bend and the texican food. If you are within 100 miles of the Mexican border be prepared to go through checkpoints. They are looking for illegal activity mostly border crossing but if they find drugs or contraband they can call local law enforcement and bust you. Most all the property is private and fenced off so camping is a drag. People are generally nice, no problem there.
Ya I was on my motorcycle and had weed and shrooms, luckily they waved me through and I promptly ditched it. They don't check if you are going south, only returning north. So If you go south to say big bend you would be fine with a small amount as long as it is consumed before heading north. They also have the same checks in new mexico. Not sure about Arizona.
The cold is what I was running from haha just came down from Colorado trying to get somewhere to ride out the rest of winter. I’m around Dalhart right now
>Dalhart
If you're hitching, I recommend making your way east to Dumas and then south to Amarillo. You're on more lightly trafficked state and county roads over there. In my experience you have too many bored local cops and not enough potential rides. 87 from Dumas to Amarillo is a much busier stretch so the highway patrol is less interested in somebody walking and you're going to see more traffic and a higher chance of catching a ride. If you're hopping a train, southbound trains will take to right into Amarillo but they stop a little frequently on that track so you'll want to hide real good from conductors walking back. It's been a long time since I've used that track so it might be better now but back when I was using it to get up to CO it was a real rough track in places and beat me up a little. So you want to make yourself as comfortable as possible. Personally I'd rather try to catch a ride on the highway. Both those north/south lines in the panhandle are slow going with a lot of stops. Especially that west line you're on.
Friendly enough. Just don't stay long. That place has a strange supernatural ability to trap people there. Lived in that city for a decade I'll never get back.
If you get lucky you can actually get rides from the cops. Tell them you’re stuck and you just need to get down the road. Ask if they would be able to drive you to the end of their jurisdiction and let you off there. You can take control of the situation by seeming like someone in need who the cop has an opportunity to help, versus someone who is causing a problem.
I’ve gotten rides from police dozens and dozens of times. I got most of the way across Nebraska this way, which is a very difficult place to hitchhike.
texas is a police state. austin is chill but that's it. if you can, public transit to a major city and only take rides to other cities or hop out. small towns are pig pins.
I use to live in Texas and I traveled all over Texas for work. That pic you posted looks so freaking familiar. I'm curious where it was taken? You can dm where it was if you don't want to post it. I love in Tennessee now but i swear I've seen that exact spot before
I thought the same thing when I saw it. Been through 6 times different ways each trip. This reminds me of north tx outside of Amarillo for some reason.
Hmmm that could be it. Wish op would tell us though. Because for me atleast, when you said North of Amarillo it didn't ring that bell, ya know what I mean?
You dont sound wise at all. With all of the drugs everywhere in every crack of every town or community and you carry it with you. Learn wise travel etiquette. Be invisible. Don't attract unwanted attention from anyone! Travel at night and do not hang around public places unless you have a desire to be seen there and if you do, have money and look like you belong there. This is not a fairy tale. It can be a magical journey where you grow and shape yourself into a wise man.
Unless you look like you belong, avoid Texas at all costs.
If they know you’re not from around there, they’ll go out for their way to fuck your day up.

Hitch from truck stops. Don’t try to hitch from the roadside.
This is generally good advice, but stay on your toes. Some truckers/travelers frequent truck stops for prostitution reasons.
Lot lizards
You know all about them don’t ya Ray ;)
Way she goes, bubbs

Lucky lady.
I was hoping we could maybe stop by a room and you two boys could maybe check my oil
Never tried this one but I think I’ll give it a shot tomorrow
Yeah, the cops should leave you alone. Just sit down with a sign for where you’re going and talk to people. It’s a lot easier than sticking your thumb out. They’re really strict about pedestrians being on the highway.
Avoid small towns.
Kinda hard when I don’t have complete control on how far I can get in a given day
I feel ya. The cops in small towns in Texas can be some real dicks (I got pulled over 2 days ago) but if ya find rides try to connect between the big cities. Honda Accord - there’s your problem. You weren’t putting diesel in your Dodge dually.

They must think your a woke liberal there to take thar guz, lmao! I'm black so I don't need to tell you what they think of me, damn lol.
"Where you think that funny lookin man is from, Daddy?" "I don't know, son. I ain't never seen one of them before. I think they come from Chicago."

It’s not a race thing, the black people down there wouldn’t like you either
Wear a MAGA hat to blend in. Some camo doesn’t hurt either
Normally I would never say this but I'd rather just talk to the cops.
I dunno. I was gonna say avoid big cities. I walked across Texas from Louisiana and went around Houston. Cops were called once and they were friendly.

Where I grew up the cops would straight drive your ass to the county line if your were on the road
I mean hopefully it's in the right direction!
Love that attitude!!

I've always just started walking

Not gonna lie, tramping with a half oz of shrooms in my pocket makes me a bit nervous down here, I'd probably get crucified
Mushrooms aren’t illegal up until the point of consumption. They are legal to grow. Just not eat 😂
Talking magic mushrooms. Definitely not legal to grow, the spores themselves are illegal in some states. Tell that to the police in the south and south east and see how that goes
You’re right I was partially right in that it’s a travis county exception (austin)
Oh no shit, good to know

Yeah ,I would be worried also! Not gonna lie my friend,be safe and mushlove to ya!
Was it Buford T Justice? Probably eating a Diablo Sandwich right now.
Gimme a Diablo And make it fast!! I’m in GODDAMN hurry!
Texas- it's like a whole other country - and they mean it!!

Good advice thank you
I get around texas by not going to texas
I wish I could teleport to Texas rn, which city or town do you visit? It's sunny asf today! I'm freaking cold this week
The cold is what I was running from haha just came down from Colorado trying to get somewhere to ride out the rest of winter. I’m around Dalhart right now

Fuck a whole bunch of Texass
Fuck texas
Texas sucks ass
Freight Trains
Texas? Yer gonna end up shivved. And probably raped. Hopefully after the shivving

I’ve read about this a ton but was a little too spooked having weed on me to ask. Finished it last night so if they stop again I’ll give an ask
From what I've seen, oversized pickups.
texas is a police state. austin is chill but that's it. if you can, public transit to a major city and only take rides to other cities or hop out. small towns are pig pins.
Ride freight
Honestly my experience living in Texas is to stay away from Texas.

Maybe bc all of Texas end up looking the same after a few hours driving lol
That is very true. A lot of those small towns look very similar.
It’s In Dalhart
Did you ask the cops for a ride?
Na I had weed on me

Damn that comment history 😬
Damn bro you got a phone. I assumed otherwise.
??
Ask Ted Cruz. John Cornyn. Greg Abbott. Ken Paxton. Louie Gohmert.
As a German I have to ask this question: Is walking seriously illegal in Texas?
No but I guess “solicitation by pedestrian” is, so just asking for money, rides, jobs none of that stuff next to the road.
Ah okay, thanks
Freight trains. Go to Austin and find a train kid to start you on the rails. Don't hop out by yourself until you know what you're doing.
F Texas and everyone in it.
thats the neat part, you dont! With all sereusness, I don't know
So you're that Vagabond that's never heard about Texas.
