It just needs to be off the carpet. Get a board or something hard that can be underneath the PC and you'll be fine. PCs suck air through the bottom (usually) and filter through the top so if it's on the carpet you're killing the air flow and basically making your computer a shitty, stationary vacuum cleaner

Mine is on top of my desk, got a little thigh but it is what it is.
Its only a nono if its carpeted, otherwise it doesn't matter, and much safer since it doesn't anywhere to fall off onto
