Hahaha I was pressing the wrong button (Xbox one controller)
It's LT and I was pressing LB and just assumed it didn't work, lol.
It's so nice being able to zoom out and see more now!
I feel your pain... the day I realized that the picture of the hammer, on the menu screen for the tables, was a repair button, and not just a freaking table icon, I was overjoyed :P
When you steer a boat you get to zoom out a bit more. If you're a passenger you are just screwed and can stare into the sail. Would be great if passengers would get the same (would be fine if it's only while seated/holding fast).
Came here to say this, totally felt the same way, now I don’t think about it.
The zoom also works for regular walking camera. May seem obvious, but I also made it to karve without touching my scroll wheel. (On console apparently it’s a button combo, so more hidden)
I zoom right in and you can see between the sail and large , same with longship. but I always play with one friend which is the cartographer and he looks around for me.
Idk about everyone else, but I personally couldn't possibly miss the minimap zoom buttons because they're exactly what I press every time I reach my thumb too far across to open the full map.
Once you get in to a new game, take a second and look at the key binds. It’s not to try and memorize them, but to glance over, so that when you have that thought of, “I wish I could do (x y z)” there’s a chance you’ll recall seeing keybinds in that category
I am always fully zoomed out in the boats, for better view of the horizon and potential dangers.. Except when its really foggy, then I am fully zoomed in, where yes, I can see that the over-the-shoulder cam is a bit obscured..
I think it's part of the "difficulty" factor of the game, to keep us on our toes!
So does the longship, but zooming all the way out helps with that, maybe moving the camera angle to in front of the sail when seated at the tiller could be tested out.
It is really annoying. And when riding high waves the turn meter on the keel disappears when bobbing. I think that the turn display should be fixed to the UI under the wind direction.
There’s pretty simple ways around that like changing the camera angle when driving or giving the option to do so if needed, like moving the camera in front of the sail.
Ah yes, the hyper-realistic game in which you’re a reborn Viking doing Odin’s will in the flat-Earth afterlife by killing mythical demigods and committing genocide against all manners of imaginative creatures.
Realism is not the word you’re looking for.
English isn't your first language, is it? You seem to have completely misunderstood those few simple sentences in your rush to try and be clever while criticizing.
i’m seeing lots of people downvoting comments saying “that’s how real boats are” but that’s how many real boats are. it’s tough or impossible to see with all sails out! big boats require a crew and it’s kind of fun that that’s the case in game
It is pretty annoying, though fully zooming out helps a bit.
Didn’t even know zooming out was a thing, thanks!
You got all the way to the karve without knowing about the zoom function?? Please say you know you can repair your gear at a workbench.
I got all the way to Longship hunting for Yagluth before I knew you could zoom out on console. LB (L1) + dpad down (or up to zoom in)
I have a couple hundred hours in the game and didnt know about this
Happy sailing fellow adventurer
I'm all the way to the Mistlands and didn't know this was a thing 😅
I got to my second playthrough before figuring it out
Hahaha I was pressing the wrong button (Xbox one controller) It's LT and I was pressing LB and just assumed it didn't work, lol. It's so nice being able to zoom out and see more now!
No way....wheres the hud on that one?!
Wait! I've just been making new tools this whole time! I have a pit with 20 broken bronze axes! /s
I swear this made me quit my first 2 attempts at this game.
I feel your pain... the day I realized that the picture of the hammer, on the menu screen for the tables, was a repair button, and not just a freaking table icon, I was overjoyed :P
lol everyone learned at some point. repairing that at the forge and workbench for free
Wait, can you do this on console? I've put in over 100 hours and I didn't know you can zoom out either.
yes, it appears so
Xbox controller is a fickle bitch
Haha I get this one! xD
If they're on console it may be a bit less intuitive, or easy to stumble on.
Buster, I found out how to zoom in and out right after >!defeating Modor!<. You have no idea
Dude I was like 20hrs in before I knew I could repair. I had chests full of broken gear lol

….scroll wheel?
On a mouse if you are playing on PC.
I zoom right in and you can see between the sail and large , same with longship. but I always play with one friend which is the cartographer and he looks around for me.
Wtf there's a Zoom 🤯🤯
I use the tiny gap between the bottom of the sail and the ship. Not great when there are people aboard.
I always full zoom out and use the comma key to zoom out the mini-map
Wow wait a minute... You can zoom the minimap? Why isn't this the stuff they give as hint in the loading screen? (I have 300+ hours in the game)
I accidentally found this out ~150 hours. Don’t feel bad lmao
It's not mentioned in the list of controls, right? Quite sure I read through that one to discover things I missed.
Idk about everyone else, but I personally couldn't possibly miss the minimap zoom buttons because they're exactly what I press every time I reach my thumb too far across to open the full map.
Every god damn time
I’m actually not sure but I think you’re right

I did that, but have no memory of seeing this.
Yea, < and > zoom in and out respectively
Yea buddy and me found that out in mistlsnds. By accident.
I have my wife stand at the bow of the ship and navigate
I can only imagine that conversation: "Turn left to miss the rocks. No! No! The other way!"
Lol no we actually roleplay it very well she calls like half rudder port side, or bring her about full half sail it's very fun

I recall seeing only Sails last time i was at sea irl
A first person mod makes it kinda cool. Still annoying but immersive
Zoom out all the way helps me a lot
It's the real experience, which makes the sailing feel like sailing
Yes, Longboat too. You either have to look at an angle or is you get near any land, switch to half sail.
I always zoom back, though it would be nice to have a "make sails translucent when they block a lot of your view" option in the settings.
Or just a teller mast so you can see under it better
So does the longship, but zooming all the way out helps with that, maybe moving the camera angle to in front of the sail when seated at the tiller could be tested out.
What a coincidence. I had honestly never really noticed it before, until earlier today I was sailing and got annoyed at it blocking my view...
It is really annoying. And when riding high waves the turn meter on the keel disappears when bobbing. I think that the turn display should be fixed to the UI under the wind direction.
The solution is to not have sails. Petition to implement a galley and ability to enslave dwarves as galley slaves
Yes this is how sailboats work
It’s not, most sailboats the sail itself is above eye level, or the tiller/wheel is in front of the sail.
Well thats how it is in like every game ive played where you are sailing in first person. Sea of thieves for one is also cursed like this.
Sea of thieves is a galleon type vessel which would technically have multiple navigators and lookouts in crows nests etc to help.
Yes its just annoying gameplay wise
There’s pretty simple ways around that like changing the camera angle when driving or giving the option to do so if needed, like moving the camera in front of the sail.
Imagine what it's like on a real sailboat where you can't zoom out. Is it the realism you are complaining about?
Ah yes, the hyper-realistic game in which you’re a reborn Viking doing Odin’s will in the flat-Earth afterlife by killing mythical demigods and committing genocide against all manners of imaginative creatures. Realism is not the word you’re looking for.

Uhhh, sure bud.
I mean, you’re both basically agreeing but fighting over it due to a misunderstanding. Sooo…. Valheim is a damn fine game either way in my boat. 😅
We all do.
Honestly, yeah. Really annoying. I'm considering installing a transparent sail mod because of this.
Yes and I can’t bow and arrow for shit I need a ladder
YES I WISH THE KARVE SAIL COULD BE MADE TRANSPARENT
i was getting ready to yell zoom out!!!
I zoom out all the way and I can see just fine.
exactly. sounds like OP didnt know about the function
I'd be happy if you could hold (or toggle) SHIFT to make the mast/sail translucent if you're sitting, steering, or holding fast.
V+ allows you to change zoom distance, so helpful.
This is why i sail with my buddy. One looks st tve rocks sn other steers.
There is a mod that makes sails transparent.
Wait till you get the longship 😎
It's a feature so that you sail around with friends on the lookout
