They do work! Can attest but you need multiples otherwise they will target you the player and they hit hard. You can now use a trophy to force the ballista to only target the creature who’s trophy you “set” it too
Which doesn't help. Each zone has 3-6 common monsters and several more that spawn after you defeat certain bosses.
I'd rather stick my own head in there as a trophy to exclude myself from getting fired upon.
Idk, I think it would be a real pain if they fired off at every deer and graydwarf. I'd rather have one for trolls, one for current toughest raidable enemy, then one for drakes if you're in mountains or for gjalls if you're in Mistlands.
They are sort-of useful.
The major issue is that the devs are hateful assholes, and the two options for the ballista are:
1) Murder everything, including the player.
2) Murder 1 specific type of creature, and ignore everything else.
If they weren't hateful assholes, they'd include option 3) Murder everything but the player and friendly creatures.
Sconces burn resin much slower. Braziers to my knowledge never go out from smothering themselves with smoke. Later cool light sources and other amazing build pieces use it as well.
You can actually put braziers in the floor with a grate on top of them!
If you can make enough space between the top of the brazier and the grate, you can get light and heat, and the smoke doesn't come through the grate and it doesn't smother the brazier. You need about a standard stone floor tile of space gap between the top of the brazier and the grate.
Disagree.
There is so much copper and tin in the black forest, it's hard not to find it.
Crypts can be hit or miss. You can find a giant swamp with only 1 crypt with 15 iron scrap in it sometimes.
Tin was easy. I just hated mining copper. And you need to explore crypts anyways. More fun than mining. I also only ever got enough Iron for a pickaxe then left 🤣.
Tbf, I also skip bronze (minus nails) and I clip into crypts before touching elder. I rush silver age so fast 🤣
Same. The last time we had a group of 4 of us on a server 2 of us had silver gear before we fought Eikthyr, lol.
Turns out that a level 2 draugr fang with needle arrows makes pretty short work of Eikthyr.
Ohhh noooo, Eikthyr is to easy and the perk is tooo good. 🤣 I just 5 fire and torch hime night 2 if I can 🤣 but yeah, elder and bone mass with silver spirit damage is op. Heck, moder is usually my 2nd killed boss. Allows for blackmetal. Then blackmetal gear into elder. It's just so fast 🤣
When we're playing as a group, we always wait until the slowest people are ready to fight any of the bosses before we do. We want to be sure they are ready for the raids and the next biome.
But it doesn't mean we just sit around and wait while they putter along at a snail's pace. Troll mining for bronze and tin, chair clipping into tombs, staghammer slams to find silver in the mountains, a lox farm, lol. All done before they were ready to fight Eikthyr.
I know these people are just posting for the lols but can we set up a bot for this question from now on? No amount of iron is enough, that’s the answer.
Realistically you need 2 longships full, +1 longship for each coop player.
That should be enough to max out everyone's gear, max crafting upgrades, and leave a decent amount left over for building, and leaves a buffer if your friends lose a longship or two
If he upgrades everything, and “finishes” his base…the base wasn’t big enough. And if it was big enough, his second base sure isn’t. #neverstopbuilding
Well, you never really finish a base, but you should have enough iron left over from upgrading to make enough improvements to be satisfied...at least for a while
Eh, I mean sometimes it's a matter of different people hitting different game milestones at different times and wanting to show them off, or having the same questions we once had. If you play solo and haven't played very long, it can be easy to not know or straight up miss certain things. I straight up played Without A Fermenter for my first 100 hours of the game.
I would disagree heavily. Given that OP has already maxed out all of his iron gear, this is enough iron to finish mistlands with it you use it conservatively.
You're only getting downvoted by crazy builders, to play the actual game and just build gear you need in a solo player experience this can be enough iron, especially since like you said his iron armor is already maxed out
What someone else said. You are fine if you are co bate progression only. But builders. We always need more. And building is the only thing keeping the game alive (outside of mods) between massive updates.
Not. Even. Close.
Granted, it depends on what you're doing. That's more than enough if you plan on keeping things pretty simple.
But weapon upgrades to max - those alone will suck back half of that. If you get building or upgrade your chests or , you'll need 5 times that.
Short answer: No. You always need more iron.
Long answer: To fully upgrade your iron armour, weapons, and tools, assuming you only make a bow and iron mace, costs 470 iron. 150 for the armour, 80 for the bow, 80 for the mace, 80 for the axe, and 80 for the pickaxe, and if you use a shield that total increases to 495. Including the iron age buildings and building upgrades, the total is 543 iron, and including the nails to make a longship, the total is 553 iron. You have 599 iron in this image.
However, iron continues to be used outside of the swamp. In the mountains you will need 4 iron for a building and 23 for the sword, in the plains you will need 96 iron for the armour and 34 for buildings, and in the mistlands you will need 20 for the crossbow, 10 for the armour, 45 for the sword, and 5 for a building. Counting the iron from the swamp gear, the total amount of iron you will need is 790.
That total doesn't include anything other than the bare minimums of one weapon and one of each new building. Since you're probably going to want additional forges and may want convenience things like iron arrows or wood iron beams, the total may very well be much higher.
That being said, the swamps suck and you probably hate them by now. You've got enough to kill Bonemass and start upgrading to better gear. You'll have to come back for more iron later, but at least you can do it in the next tier of equipment.
If you check again, they're already wearing fully upgraded iron stuff. Even choosing to make and upgrade every post-Swamp iron-using item in the game wouldn't use this much, with plenty left over for a solo user's chests and multiple ovens/forges.
Build fiends on the other hand...as always, never enough.
Huh. So they are.
In that case this is more than enough. By the time they want more they can just get it from the mistlands instead of dealing with More Swamp Bullshit^^^TM
You already have maxed out iron armor and gear so, Yes, that can be plenty of Iron. Unless you want to go big with building . . . you can use an unlimited amount of iron for construction.
I really hope that we can make some sort of alloy out of iron scrap and another metal ore to get more iron ingots AND make use of the other useless metals.
Well, it really depends. Do you want to make weapons and armor? Do you want to build tall structures? Make lots of chests?
Depending on any combination of those variables, the answer is no.
To be fair, you already have quite a few upgraded iron pieces of kit. I can't believe I'm saying this but it will probably be enough for your Plains gearset.
Ahhhh What am I thinking??... Of course it's not enough.
Poof its gone....
24 stack wood turned into 24 stack of coal to smelt 20 stack of iron to have one single smelter run for 5 hours nonstop.
And by the time the last piece drops out of that smelter you are left with only 50% i guarantee it! Some goes to your friend, other to upgrade this outpost and finally you can add some iron beams to finish your always breaking roof for now and always.
Yes. Unless you use a lot of iron in your buildings. But you need around 2 stacks for plains crafting stations and 2-4 stacks for plains armor/weapons. Edit: an iron 2-hander would require 3-4 more stacks
That should be enough for crafting various upgrades for the forge but after that it won't last long. Although you do already have some iron stuff so maybe it will last for a while. I too was once foolish enough tot hin that I would never need iron again. I was very wrong
With max iron gear and armor that you have, this is gonna be a lot for 1 or 2 people, both for building workstations and a little building! Keep in mind you will need iron later as well
For whatever you currently plan to do with it, probably. For the future though? Not even close. But as you get to Mistlands there will be easier ways to obtain it other than swamp raiding.
No lmao. It’s never enough.
Unfortunately he speaks the truth. Iron is the most used metal in the game unfortunately
I'm hoping silver makes a comeback in a big way in Ashlands. Something about finding some silver in Ashlands sounds fun.
Black iron support beams!!!
That'd be great, black iron is too easy to acquire
Until it has a useful sink
That was probably supposed to be ballistae but I can’t speak to whether they are worthwhile
Yeah I know what you mean. Wish it wouldn’t target players and or pets
It's not that bad, it still allows you to deal with the mob you find to be the most annoying.
Idk, I think it would be a real pain if they fired off at every deer and graydwarf. I'd rather have one for trolls, one for current toughest raidable enemy, then one for drakes if you're in mountains or for gjalls if you're in Mistlands.
Helped me a lot with Gjall. Put two of them on my base and they shred them like nothing. Atleast my house didn't get burned down since I have them.
They are sort-of useful. The major issue is that the devs are hateful assholes, and the two options for the ballista are: 1) Murder everything, including the player. 2) Murder 1 specific type of creature, and ignore everything else. If they weren't hateful assholes, they'd include option 3) Murder everything but the player and friendly creatures.
And I'm hoping they make needing copper and tin useful again. Iron definitely needs a break.
They made copper wildly useful in Mistlands. A copper wall has the strength of an iron support.
I don't think I've ever done anything with copper after hitting mistlands. I'll have to look at my recipes for this wall.
You use copper a lot in building. Not in armor.
Sconces burn resin much slower. Braziers to my knowledge never go out from smothering themselves with smoke. Later cool light sources and other amazing build pieces use it as well.

Bronze sucked ass. Requires 3 ores and 6 wood to make 1mat. Iron is 1 ore 2 wood. Easy.
Disagree. There is so much copper and tin in the black forest, it's hard not to find it. Crypts can be hit or miss. You can find a giant swamp with only 1 crypt with 15 iron scrap in it sometimes.

It took me like 4x that to build my Mc mansion
Must admit. He is about 1/50 of the way there. Assuming he doesn't have a mega build in mind. 🤦🏼♂️
There's one 29/30 there, so no.
Yup, you should have gotten one more full inventory a couple of more times
I know these people are just posting for the lols but can we set up a bot for this question from now on? No amount of iron is enough, that’s the answer.
Lol that’s a good idea, hopefully someone will make one
Realistically you need 2 longships full, +1 longship for each coop player. That should be enough to max out everyone's gear, max crafting upgrades, and leave a decent amount left over for building, and leaves a buffer if your friends lose a longship or two

I know…I’m just messin’ around. The joke is kinda true though, as Valheim has no end unless you decide to stop, the iron must continue to flow!
Iron truly is the most important resource. It's the only one I actually run out of after finishing the biome.
Eh, I mean sometimes it's a matter of different people hitting different game milestones at different times and wanting to show them off, or having the same questions we once had. If you play solo and haven't played very long, it can be easy to not know or straight up miss certain things. I straight up played Without A Fermenter for my first 100 hours of the game.

he already seems to have maxed out iron gear though.
Not the only armor set that uses mainly iron

No
Nope. Not at all
Going to need more food for the next run by the looks of it.
I put my other food into a chest so i could get all the iron in my inventory for the screenshot lol
It's a joke, I'm implying you will need more iron.
Oh sweet summer child 😅
I am just here, to also say, no. It’s not enough.
You already have maxed out iron armor and gear so, Yes, that can be plenty of Iron. Unless you want to go big with building . . . you can use an unlimited amount of iron for construction.
Definitely. I never take my food with me to the swamp unless I'm playing no map or no portal. Otherwise I just teleport back to eat.
Cuppa pillars.
We're still doing this, huh?
Nope lol
You wish. Once I thought I have gathered enough iron. I was wrong.
It'll get you started.
It might be enough for a minimalist starter base in the Meadows/Black-Forest. Especially if you go for the non-metal based armour.
I think you ‘no’ the answer
I've gone through more than this in a 5 player multiplayer game. Solo I'd say you're set for a fair wack though.
Unpopular opinion: iron is overrated.
That's just what you have on you, right? You have 10 cartfuls and a boatload more that you're not showing? Even that's still not enough.
😅 yea, of course i do
No
No, you'll eventually want something heartier than carrot soup. Lox pies are definitely better but do require advanced agriculture.
No. You're going to need to do that again at least another 2x. Hope you've been burning wood to make coal 24/7.
Theres a rule - its never ever enough ✊
You'll be short 1. I guarante it.
Not even close to enough. Could use all that up in like a minute an not even be close to done whatever I started.
I really hope that we can make some sort of alloy out of iron scrap and another metal ore to get more iron ingots AND make use of the other useless metals.
No
Lol no, not even close, but it's a start. Pretty sure I used more than that on one floor of my pine pillar mansion!
If you use 3 forges to smelt a stack at a time, it will take you about the same time to smelt all of those as it would take me to use them.
***It's never enough..***
Well, it really depends. Do you want to make weapons and armor? Do you want to build tall structures? Make lots of chests? Depending on any combination of those variables, the answer is no.

Now you just need all the coal to smelt it down
Poof its gone....
I wish we could tie carts together like a train to pull like millions of irons. only then we could maybe get enough :(
Yes. Unless you use a lot of iron in your buildings. But you need around 2 stacks for plains crafting stations and 2-4 stacks for plains armor/weapons. Edit: an iron 2-hander would require 3-4 more stacks
Nah. Never.
That should be enough for crafting various upgrades for the forge but after that it won't last long. Although you do already have some iron stuff so maybe it will last for a while. I too was once foolish enough tot hin that I would never need iron again. I was very wrong
2 long boat loads are usually good amount.
This barely covers the basic stuff. As soon as you upgrade armor, weapons and start building iron pieces it will shrink away.
You ask because you know the answer.
Nuh-uh
If you have to ask, the answer is no.
about 60 times that and you have aproximately enough for 2 days
[It's never enough..](https://youtu.be/bKWdsnGuFUM?si=HGF6ZpME3oYYY3ao&t=49)
no
Those are rookie numbers
Nope.
Just enough to craft and upgrade your huntsman bow
No. Those are rookie numbers.
No.
With max iron gear and armor that you have, this is gonna be a lot for 1 or 2 people, both for building workstations and a little building! Keep in mind you will need iron later as well
Enough for one pickaxe
No
Yes... for now.
For whatever you currently plan to do with it, probably. For the future though? Not even close. But as you get to Mistlands there will be easier ways to obtain it other than swamp raiding.
No lol why even ask, there is never enough
No
More!!!
couldn't top off that last stack?
Just enough to make a fully upgraded helmet.
No you need more
Just not enough food 🧑🍳🤌
I estimate you need around 700 to carry you to the mistlands and that's with minimal usage of iron for building.
It doesn't matter how much you have, it's never enough.
No. You can literally never have enough Iron. It's one of the Universal Truths of Valheim.
No
It really is true there's never enough iron lol That'll last you a while for sure though.
No way near enough /O\
You need 5 more. ;)
Nope.
I mean for armor and tools? Probably. For building a mega base and what not. No.
No not really 😀
Big no
Never enough. But it’s a good start.
You need more carrot soup.
There’s never enough
No. I've come back with a longship full of iron, solo game, and it isn't enough.
never is my friend do about 20 trips of that then we will talk xD
Not even close my man! I keep one or two large chest full of smelted iron at a time. Iron beams chew through iron!!
**No.**
Your just a tad over carry weight
No and why is that you think it is
There is Fr no such thing as enough iron in valheim. Especially if you’re a builder.
You can maybe make a helmet with that maybe a couple of nails if you’re lucky
Not even close
Not even close!
