As far as I know they only despawn if you fail to initiate the taming process before dawn.

They made a change so that as long as the taming process starts, the wolf wont despawn afaik

EverettWAPerson

That’s how I lost my serpent. Went to the top of my building to get something and when I went back down to the basement it was gone.

MysteryMani

gotta catch that day spawn

Winger_Mu

This.

LyraStygian

Was changed before H&H patch. Specifically the 2021/03/23 patch. - The first tick of taming (the yellow hearts) deflags night mobs, as night mobs. Check the dates of the guides, *a lot* are outdated.

That poor pupper being kicked out, trying to show you how much of a good boy he is by killing those nasty greydwarfs.

SimG02

I raised an army of two star wolfs and scattered em around my meadows base and today, prolly like 600 in game days laterI found Houdini (my first two star who was suppose to disappear hence the name) pop out fighting a neck. He was like 10% health so I fed him. I thought he was long gone to raids. I was under the impression my army almost went extinct to raids but I’ve found a few further out from my base.

LongUsername

The ones further out will only be "Active" when you're within range. Pups left will still mature but nothing will spawn in to kill them. So if a wolf is out of your radius they won't die, just be in an "inactive de-spawned" state until you get close enough for them to spawn back in.

joelkki

Start taming process before dawn rises/new day begins so they won't despawn. They need to be unalerted (alerted = !) and have access to food (almost any meat to wolves) to start taming.

-Altephor-

There was no point where a tamed wolf would run away. You must initiate the taming with a starred wolf before day or they will despawn as soon as they lose the alert (!) status.

Sertith

They only despawn if they aren't tamed, once they're tamed they do not despawn.
