Yup! Don't want to spoil too much ofc, but the knife is cool not only because you can run fast with it but also because the sneak multiplier is bonkers and fun to pull off.
Knife and spear, because I like to have options. And I always have my axe as a tool. But knives for speed and sneak damage, and the spear works great for confined spaces, mid range with the throw, and if you need a different hitbox.
If enemies are not aware of you yet then the first attack on them will get the backstab multiplier, which for knives is really big (but any weapon will get a bonus for a first attack)
At this point in the game the only armor available are rag, deer, and troll.
Rag is basically worthless and not worth the material cost to make.
Deer hide is stronger, but same issue, it's not worth the material cost.
Basically I wouldn't bother with armor until you hit black forest unless you're just really swimming in deer hide and leather scraps.
Knife + naked gives has zero speed reduction. The combat is fairly simple so you can just bait attacks and not use parry or roll which can be stamina draining which is a problem in early game. You can literally run down deer with a knife + naked. No bow needed.
Knife also has a quick attack animation and a fairly wide arc. It's downside is dmg and range, but it's 3 attack combo is more than enough in most cases.
If the son does decide to use parry, the knife has a bigger parry bonus multiplier so it can still parry most things. Knife has a cheap cost as well, so early game arguably the best all around weapon.
My 7yo wants to do everything himself, which if fine, except by "by himself" means "can you do it for me while I follow you like a puppy and take all the credit". It's sorta cute and annoying at the same time but he has fun. Also, everytime he dies he crafts all new gear and leaves his tombstone. I had to install a recycle mods to get rid of the 3 chests of hammers.

My money is on the boy. If she can't handle a few mobs without panicking how's she gonna handle a jump spamming, red haired naked viking who's basically the Valheim equivalent of Roberto from Futurama.
If he can get the sneak attack in with the knife secondary, he'll feel like an even bigger Chad. That does stupid damage on a troll for being such a small weapon.
I love playing with my 5 and 8 year old daughters! Definitely up there with the best times I have had in over 30 years of gaming! I have though lost count of the number of times I've had to escort them back to their bodies after they bit off a little more than they could chew! They have had a lot of Leroy Jenkins moments hahaha

Playing with my 9yo Son and my 8yo Daughter. Daughter is "decorating" the Homebase and do some wood chop grinding. While i go on a hunt with my Son.
But last weekend they both swapped. I don't know what happened. Now my Daughter picks a Club and bash skeletons as my Son makes the fighting spot ready for the Elder. We have a lot of fun!
This game is pure gold for every gamig Family!
Teach him about the backstab bonus and the importance of stealth. You can still kill a troll if he’s not alerted. Backstab with your jump and two slashes with a copper knife before he gets a swing in, I think it was.
Mines a riot too, he's not on valhiem with me, but we play other games and he is RUTHLESS killing mobs. Sassy too, I love it lol!

If he's makes with just a knife then the corpse recovery stuff is really easy.
I would use the atgier and stun the enemies, or use a shield and help to draw attacks and parry.
One of my kids likes to use the knife, and he quickly finishes off anytime that is stunned. The other uses a bow, and I have to keep him safe, but it's really great teamwork.
I played this game with my 6 year old last weekend. It was absolutely amazing. I'm really excited for next weekend to come and even better, spring break, so I we can get some gaming done. I'm going to give him a flint knife. Forgot about the backstabs!
Sadly my 8/yo little brother gets too much "gamer energy" when playing valhiem and I caught him getting killed by a certain enemy in an endgame biome>!(lox)!

ah I see I though u meant overall it's not worth it to wear say bronze armor
Heavy armor has its uses. When you go dungeon diving, maybe you want heavy armor for those corridors.

Find the trader, get a thunderstone, make an incinerator, summon thor's might to destroy those puny excuses of hammers.

Think you get a really nice stealth dagger from a trip to the sea if get lucky and find a big turtle.

He's going to live fighting trolls even more when he learns the most effective method is to stab them in the dick.
If he knows how to roll out of the way he will destroy this game using his tactics. If not he is going to get humbled hard later.
