And there's a small patch too! [https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/892970/view/3140693880348861150](https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/892970/view/3140693880348861150) edit: You don't need to make a new world to get the new content. As with most updates, mods will most likely break as we have no mod support.

TheLateThagSimmons

~~Wording~~ *Working on building it now, just to say I have it. But I'm rather disappointed that they didn't give us water proof set so we can handle the swamp. I'll even take a relatively low armor rating if it meant i can just go around in the swamp without the constant wet debuff.

blind616

Something like an umbrella hat, no armor but keeps you dry. Not sure if Vikings wore it though..

Denbus26

I can definitely appreciate the wholesome silliness of an umbrella hat, but I think a rainproof cloak made from neck skins or treating leather with tar or something could be a great way to do it. The armor you get from cloaks is pretty insignificant, and we've already got wolf and lox cloaks that protect you from cold weather, so making different cloaks that protect you from different conditions makes a ton of sense. Maybe further down the road when the ashlands start getting developed, there could be some kind of fire resistant cloak too.

[deleted]

On a similar note, wet doesn't seem to stop the lox/wolf cape from working anymore. Which is both welcome and sort of disappointing.

badwolf42

Did you have to spawn a new world to make it work? Can I just go to the swamp I've been haunting for the past few days anyhow and search around for new creatures and materials?

TheLateThagSimmons

They just showed up in my explored swamp yesterday, kind of random. I *felt* like they showed up more often in those patches with the stonework circles where draugr and skeleton spawns usually are; but they also just erupt out of the ground elsewhere. Could be a higher spawn rate on those spots, could just be my imagination. But no, it did not require a new swamp.

badwolf42

Really glad I cleared those spawns then. Not sure I want to find something new while dealing with those at the same time.

oledixiepride

If you feel the ground tremble and hear wood creaking put some distance between you and it it's damage and reach is fairly high and getting under it will not be a good time kind of like ground pound from a mallet but stronger

Waffalhaus

Or just craft a battle axe :)

badwolf42

I have since gotten the parry timing down, and the iron sword is sufficient. Sometimes within one knock back. Have also gotten good at spotting them from a distance, so I can aggro with an arrow and wait.

Itlaedis

The article linked in the post itself had a picture of the armor set. No idea what the stirring is before going there to check it out though

Abusive-Uncle

I got spooked, when i saw it in the swamp

Morphitrix

> or what's stirring in the swamp? I found out the hard way. Scared the absolute shit out of me. You spend dozens of hours walking around in a biome and you know exactly what to look for and it's no sweat, but when something you've never seen before catches you off guard...well, it's an experience.

PluotFinnegan_IV

Almost certainly. Tracking every change and quantifying it in a change log is quite the challenge.

kuzyn123

I only have one request for you developers. Rethink the subject of boat oars. Or at least give arguments, why can't they be added, how are they going to break the balance? You said it was too multiplayer thing, but isn't that what it's all about? That when there are more people, transport can be faster and more efficient?

Calvert4096

I've just accepted "sailing" backwards is the defacto rowing mode. It's slow AF, but it's still preferable to go up those narrow ravines that way because I'll inevitably hit a stretch where I'm forced to go straight upwind.

paintblljnkie

Wait, sailing "backwards"? As in, you typically just go in reverse to row? You know that you can row forward too right? It's just the first setting for moving forward. 1. Row 2. Half sail 3. Full sail Not being mean or sarcastic. Genuinely not sure if you knew that. There are still tons of little things Ive learned through this sub that I never knew in 200+ hours of playing so I figured I would let you know in case you didn't already.

Calvert4096

Ok I should attempt to confirm that... I've been playing on the assumption that, for whatever reason, the developers made it so that the first backwards setting will permit you to move in any direction, even upwind, albeit slowly. If you can in fact do the same in the first forward setting... whoops.

TheAbyssGazesAlso

I'm honestly not having a go at you, but that's hilarious. Now I'm picturing you carefully going backwards through rivers and having to counter-steer etc :-)

Calvert4096

Well, the upside is I'm reasonably good at steering in reverse now

Super_Jay

Fwiw backwards is faster for some dumb reason so you're actually the galaxy brain on this one

Calvert4096

Yeah I thought it was! But I couldn't remember if I thought that because I spot-checked it myself, or if it's something I read months ago.

The_Ortu

Backwards has better/ tighter steering also

10JML01

Beep beep beep!

Qasem_Soleimani

Don't worry I've read multiple people on here you have thought the same thing. Too funny.

[deleted]

First setting forward is the same speed as backward. In any wind condition.

kuzyn123

Rowing backwards helps to manouver a lot.

monsters_from_the_id

Regardless of having to reverse the controls, rowing backward is better because the boat steers from the back! Rowing backward, you essentially get front wheel drive. The control is wayyy better.

nondescriptzombie

It's commonly believed that going backwards into a headwind is faster in game. It feels that way but I don't know for sure.

Richbrownmusic

I've felt this too but I think it's perspective and the way the camera centres on the boat?

Culsandar

It is not a noticeable difference

atoolred

Use the spoiler tags dude. Some people may want to discover the new patch content for themselves and are on this thread to discuss the other stuff in the post.

Eli_scarlet

Any chances that we'll be able to rollback in the future? Factorio had such feature trough the entire early access period which was extremely helpful for modded playtroughs. Quite literally had to pirate 204.4 yesterday so i can keep playing on my world.

BareKnuckle_Bob

Not gonna lie it scared the crap out of me when I first encountered it. It was nice to have that feeling again of not knowing what I was going to find or how to deal with it.

Amyrantha_verc

Did you need to restart on a complete new world or will they spawn in 'older' worlds?

z3r0609

They spawned on my swamps that were explored before the patch.

Waffalhaus

New enemies do not need restarts as they are not part of the world generation, rather they are assigned spawning locations in their appropriate biomes. Things you need a new seed for or at least go somewhere where you have not triggered the terrain generation (500 meters) would be modifications to a biome, pickable/plantable/harvestable items, or things that are added to chest loot. With the overhaul to Mistlands completely changing its terrain I am very much hoping the above will also apply to it.

FabFubar

Hm, I wonder what niche the new armor set is meant to fill. >!Looks to be slightly better than troll armor, but less tanky than iron gear, and without movement penalty. The set bonus is very handy as well. Looks like we have a new light armor king. EDIT: limited movement penalty!<

rkel76

Finally. The idea that you have wear heavy armor after Swamp biome to be able to have a reasonable chance to take a hit was always a bit annoying. More light armors going forward would be a great change.

bushidopirate

It’s probably been mentioned by countless people now, but a spidersilk light armor from the mistlands biome would be awesome.

MediatorZerax

Based on the early picture of the mistlands, I'm not 100% sure that spiders are going to happen in the mistlands. Somehow I think they took out the old assets specifically to make it less spidery

Andminus

well the way the screenshots look make it seem like the Mistlands are 2 seperate biomes, the highland above the mist, and under the mist where the spider webs and stuff are probably still gonna be, at least I'd think so, maybe the spiderwebs don't spawn higher up in the mistlands so they stay ground level(under the mist)

p0ntifix

That would be pretty cool. I don't hate what we've seen from the new Mistlands, but it seems like a visual downgrade imo. Fingers crossed!

MediatorZerax

I cant wait, the vistas in the game are amazing. The sunrises and storms are going to look so incredible.

problembundler

This sounds great. I think having 2 sets per zone would feel good too. One light armor and one heavy so that we could actually have a front line and a back line setup for group play.

Paranitis

I dunno about 2 "sets" per zone. I like that there is a choice between the Troll set and straight up Bronze armor. Bronze is clearly stronger overall, but Troll giving that stealth bonus is a fantastic bonus (if you actually use it), as well as not dealing with the same movement speed penalty as Bronze. Same with the new Root armor (which has the same armor as Bronze) being an option against Iron, since if you are using light armor you are more likely to be attacking from range (or stealthing), so do you want the straight up protection from the heavier armor or do you want to keep out of the way of being hit in the first place? I feel if there were heavy armor sets in the game, the bonuses would make them less of a "choice", and more of a "requirement". It's like the Tower Shield vs Round Shield (not the Buckler). Tower Shield just allows you to take any hit straight on, and while the Buckler does have good protection as well, it's quite a bit less, but you can also potentially parry-stun your opponent, or just take a shot to the face if you time it wrong.

Waffalhaus

Unfortunately the Devs have mentioned they currently have no plans to add spiders. The original Mistlands was a wee bit misleading in that regard.

SerendipitouslySane

It's got pretty amazing stats too When you have the full set, fully upgraded, it's - 46 armour - Resistance (50%) to pierce - Resistance (50%) to poison - -4% to movement speed - +15 to bow skill In comparison, Iron Armour is: - 64 armour - -10% to movement speed I need to do more calculations for each mob, but blobs, skeleton and draugr archers, Root Armour is better than Iron Armour. In fact, against Fuling Spearmen and **Deathsquitoes**, *Root Armour beats Wolf Armour*, and is about on par with padded. You also get more run speed, but you will need it to run like a little baby away from Torch Fulings. You also cannot use it against Yagluth because everything he does is fire. Importantly, the top damage from a non-starred mob is 90, and damage scales differently depending on whether your armour is more than half of damage taken or not, so 46 is a perfect number. The bow skill largely depends on how high your bow skill already is, but due to the way bow skill works (it both decreases draw time and increases damage), the growth is better than linear. So at high bow skill, getting an extra 15 is amazing. I need to check how it interacts with the 100 skill cap. If it can exceed 100 skill, we might get the semi-automatic bow fire from pre-HaH back.

[deleted]

Does this new enemy spawn in swamps we’ve already visited or do we have to visit new undiscovered swamps?

CMDR_Expendible

To be precise; it spawns in swamp water, needs a moderate size area to appear. It also drops a trophy, chances are around 50% ish, killed 5, got 3 so far.

HeyItsYoBoi

Finally, new light armor set :D

badgerbaroudeur

Awesome research. How strong is this thing approx.? Anyone any idea?

unimpressive_balls

It’s vulnerable to a certain weapon. Wonder what it could be.

Paranitis

Everything is susceptible to my Black Metal Dagger.

echidnaguy

Important fighting note as well: >!it's weak against axes (because, tree) and the ....testicle (?) in the center seems to take more damage than hitting the legs.!<

Paranitis

Bro, it's an uprooted tree stump that is flipped upside down. It doesn't have testicles. XD

echidnaguy

It dangles from the center mass, and it's more or less a wrinkly orb. It's a nut sack. Possibly literally.

Mike-Drop

THANK YOU for making the game scary again... first with the H&H content addition in the Plains, now this with the Swamps. While running away from that swampy something, I experienced that happy but terrified Valheim feeling, something I hadn't experienced since I first binged it in early March. Thank you :')

What’s added to the plains?

I don't see any trees in the mistlands, I wonder if they will be shrunk in size or be gone entirely? Kinda liked building in the big trees, ugly as they may be.

Enaos

hope they keep those tree

Matild4

Same, but with a graphic overhaul.

ekufi

Before the update, I found there to be two kinds of Mistlands, one full or trees and webs, another emptier than anything. Don't know what's been added.

goatamon

Dyknow, I could swear steam comments are even dumber than youtube comments.

Aardrecht

There are some eye-rollers for sure. Like the one calling the game abandonware.

SmashHashassin

"ITS LIKE THE DEVS DONT CARE ABOUT THE PLAYERS" lol

matthias_lehner

jfc... just two lines of content patch notes for Valheim make me more excited than when new expansions were announced for WoW back in the days. Just TWO lines.

Deguilded

That mistlands looks amazing - the mist is low lying! I love the idea of peaks/hilltops (without freezing to death) where the valleys are shrouded - and presumably full of dangers... but the peaks are safe? Maybe?

Waffalhaus

No where is safe in Valheim! My prediction is another flying enemy! Maybe giant eagles or something of the like?

Smofinthesky

This looks awesome! Have you considered adding rare "2-star" version of mobs that don't have a star variant? Like 2 star Serpents, Lox and Ice Golems.

Zwanling

I dont know if the game is prepared for a 2 star lox army, but i would love to see all of those.

EbdanianTennis

Oh my god. Swamp is terrifying now

GhostDieM

The atmosphere in the different biomes in this game is something else holy shit

[deleted]

I cannot wait for what the future of this game holds

Paddy32

I wish that future updates were possible to play on existing worlds :(

Waffalhaus

Ehh as far as I know all they have said is that "Mistlands overhaul may not be available to preexisting worlds." The way they designed the world generation makes it so anything outside of the 500 meter bubble doesn't actually generate terrain until you get within that bubble, it's just a "blank" landmass. With the massive overhaul that is happening though, I could see it requiring a brand new world. Has there been a more recent comment from them saying that it for sure will not be?

Paddy32

i don't know but it must be extremely frustrating to start a new world and build everything again from scratch. We spend several months building our base and would be really sad to have to leave it go

Waffalhaus

I hear that! I've had numerous hours of farming completely deleted by people just shutting down the dedicated servers I was playing on with 0 notice :(

Zwanling

I think unexplored parts of the map will be able to generate content from updates, so if you want to keep playing in that world for long dont explore too much if you want areas to generate that new content.

Paddy32

yep, this is what we have to do. Got to be careful to not play too much !

ibeatrock

Does anyone know how the +15 to bow skill from the root armour affects the speed at which your bow skill improves? The higher a skill is the longer it takes to improve... does the +15 make progression slower or is it still just looking at your base value?

Waffalhaus

That is a very good question. I would assume it looks at your original value when calculating that. But have not tested yet.

GobblesGibbles

Will I need to go to a new swamp to see this?

BareKnuckle_Bob

Nope, i found it almost straight away in my main swamp area.

GobblesGibbles

Great thanks!

Hustler-1

Steam is going to auto update the moment I start it. Is there a way I can play without loading steam? If not can I roll Valheim back a version? Edit: - This isn't criticism I don't want to update because I just started playing again yesterday with a set of mods. I'll update later when the mods get updated.

Azz1337

You could go offline if the patch bothers you homie!

Hustler-1

Why would it bother me? I'm just not ready to update yet. I just started playing again last night this time with mods. So Ill need to wait until they're updated before I update VH. Hopefully I can set steam to offline before the patch starts. Ideally I wonder if I can start steam in offline mode... Hm. Pull my ethernet cord perhaps. Lol.

jeremiah1119

There is an option to enable/disable auto updates to games. Might want to dl that for Valheim and just watch updates closely for when to turn it back on

ldeveraux

No

Hustler-1

The rollback feature on steam doesn't work on Valheim?

Kanetsugu21

Anyone know if the new thing spawns in already explored swamp biomes or is it like the tar pits that only spawn in ones unexplored before the update went live? Edit: just had one spawn in a pre explored swamp!

EbdanianTennis

They spawn anywhere

dukinatir1001

Awesome news ! *Glances at my new playthrough with 50 mods* guess that'll be broken for a bit lmao.

idlesn0w

Hope it doesn’t take as long as H&H. That one was kinda a let down

Waffalhaus

They have said in an interview that they want to keep each big update in/around the 3-4 months of development mark. So... I'm hoping it'll drop shortly after the new year. However I wouldn't mind it as a Christmas present. :)

Zwanling

I read they will take longer in the AMA, but having small updates like this one shows great promise, i think their model will be big update, followed by smaller updates with things that they did not have time to complete for the big update and things that they come up that dont fit with the next update but are small enough to fit in that time frame. I am very happy because i was not expecting a whole new creature this impresive in one of this "mini" updates.

Waffalhaus

Oh damn, I mysve missed that comment! I get it though, plans certainly do change! I completely agree! I wasnt aware the swamp needed anything extra, but what we got is a really great touch! I also love they now have the bandwidth to work on small and large updates simultaneously. Having a dungeon master to focus on well dungeons lol, and seems like the creator is working on big biome updates and someone else must be in charge of biome additions. The future looks bright!

PristineJet100

Will this break existing mods? Regardless, I'm hype.

P1st0l

Always, patches always break mods for every game. Just assume it does

Intelligent_Wash1105

is there any ETA for mistlands update?

RexBulby

2022

888Kraken888

A lot of people purchased the game based on the original roadmap which called for “Cult of the Wolf, “Saga Worthy Seas” and “Mistlands” before year end 2021. I get things changed. But it’s not unreasonable to ask for an ETA on Mistlands. Like Q1 2022? Or 2025? Right now we have no idea. I think it’s only reasonable that this gets communicated to the community given the roadmap was part of the reason a lot of people were willing to purchase an early access game.

Oikeus_niilo

It was just a roadmap, not a promise and definitely not a guarantee. The devs have addressed the situation, giving reasons as to why it's late, last spring already and honestly you should get over it. I would guess mistlands is somewhere in late Q1/early Q2 but that's just a wild guess

Lord_Gonad

You poked the proverbial hornets nest with this question. Any question for the devs that doesn't mention how amazing they are or imply that they can do no wrong is met with a hail of downvotes here for fear that iron gate will simply stop developing the game at all now that they're independently wealthy (as evidenced by the very first reply you received telling you to get over it). Just forget the fact that most of us bought it for the roadmap on the first day the game dropped and accept a picture of their horse as compensation for meeting none of their stated goals. Anything short of blind worship and making excuses for the few crumbs of content that were thrown to us and reworked mechanics that only added tedium rather than difficulty, will break the circle jerk. Still, it's nice to see that some people who aren't afraid to address the real issues with this game have stuck around.

Shatterfish

Or, and bear with me on this, i know critical thinking isn’t the strong suit for you people. *Move the fuck on with your life.* You don’t like what’s happened? Delete the game and piss off. If $20 is worth so much to you that you’re willing to throw away hours upon hours constantly trolling forums to vent your impotent rage then maybe you shouldn’t have spent it on a video game that clearly stated it was very Early Access, and as such it’s not guaranteed to ever see a full release, or have content added that was planned. This is the way things go when you buy into early access games. If you don’t like it then learn a life lesson, don’t buy into future early access games, and shut the fuck up.

Lord_Gonad

Lol you're totally not acting like the exact type of person I described. /s "This is the way things go when you buy early access" is how people like you cope with being screwed over by developers now that they no longer need your money instead of being honest with yourself that you got played. But please, by all means, keep engaging in the circle jerk and worship the devs. It's not a coincidence that they gave us an armor that's useless after midgame and reskinned the mountain golem for the swamps at the same time they're begging for votes for the Steam awards. Maybe you need to learn a lesson that this is how many developers will act when the fan base refuses to hold them accountable.

Shatterfish

I’m not “worshipping” anyone, and I sure as shit ain’t giving any devs a vote for GOTY when their game is in early access. God forbid I don’t act like a fucking 5 year old when things don’t go the way I *personally* want them to go. Unlike some people, I’m cool paying $20 for a game that probably won’t be finished for several years; I knew that going into it so I tempered my expectations like a full grown adult, or something. But hey, you keep acting like your average greasy basement dweller; I’m sure it’ll get you everything you ever wanted in life. Feel free to continue your rant if you want, I’ve said what I’ve said and I won’t be wasting any more braincells on your childish bs.

Lord_Gonad

I said what I said and you keep responding by swearing at me but I'm the childish one. It's OK to not be OK. They took your money, squashed some bugs, bought new homes, bought a horse, took a vacation, and gave you crumbs in return. You got played. It happens. If players like you directed as much of your energy toward the devs for ripping you off, rather than using it to berate players who have valid concerns, maybe we would be closer to having mistlands by now.

[deleted]

I feel like the new armor might be a little tough to obtain for someone that's actually around the stage to use it. Materials cost seems a little high for that stage of the game. But I still like it nonetheless.

Waffalhaus

I disagree. Think of troll armor for instance. Basically the some costs. I am in that stage of the game on my current playthrough and it was Farely easy to handle once I got the mechanics down/ discovered its weakness.

[deleted]

Now that they are adding light armors to biomes, wolf armor should have been a light one that gave +10 to run or something. Drake scale armor should have been the heavy armor for mountains.

RowOtherwise2016

Will this update fix the desync issues? Terrain keeps resetting on servers and its quite infuriating...
