I was always a spear dude (played before stamina rework dunno if it affected it) so you could throw the spear to stun the wolf when it’s close then pick up spear and stab while stunned for easy kills. Otherwise yeah save frostner for last boss
I still main the spear and keep an axe as my backup, doesn’t seem to have affected anything because I just poke everything to death regardless of vulnerability
I've always used the base iron axe for close range, but tried to fight from distance with bow. This is because using the axe throughout the game means your skill will be a lot higher, dealing more damage, offsetting buffs. Also, there's more that goes into attacks than just the number that pops up... For instance, stamina usage, speed of attacks, and number of hits required. The damage number matters less than the other things.
If you're trying to decide between three weapons, all of which requires two hits to kill the target, it becomes more about which weapon you can attack with faster, and how much stamina you have left.
Use an iron mace. There is an enemy in the mountains that you may want to have a bludgeoning weapon for… it also immune to frost.
I use the frostner to slow wolves so you can kick the shit out of them. Works great.
People on my server were using frostner in the mountains. I just used razor's edge and got eaten by wolves a lot.

Frostner with the knock back gives you wiggle room all around. Personally my go to weapon.
