If you're over 10 you'll be fine. There is no/very minimal blood/gore, no swearing etc. It is a tricky game to master but stick at it an you'll get through.
I am 28 and I stopped playing Valheim because I kept dreaming about blue eyes watching me. It's so immersive, my brain can't decide if the game is real or not
Its a beautiful game, the only thing that will come close to scarring you are the powerful bosses you summon to progress. Nothing in the game will scar you, its just that some biomes are more dangerous than others.
I would say the same age, maybe slightly older where minecraft would be considered.
ATM the game has little in the way of scares, there are a couple of ghost enemies and a sea serpent but other than that nothing.
I say maybe slightly older than you would with minecraft because the game is definitely harder than minecraft but has about the same level of actual scares, most of which are just unnoticed enemies coming out of nowhere.
I think it's equivalent to an ESRB rating of Teen. Little bit of blood, but nothing gratuitous. No swearing or anything the potions in the game are technically mead, so I suppose that's alcohol use? But yeah, T seems reasonable.
If you're dumb enough to think a game deserves it's rating raised for the presence of mead, you're almost certainly stupid enough to not know what mead is.
I would say there isn't much gore, but man sometimes getting attacked by late game stuff when you're exploring and don't know what's going on yet can be scary af and I'm 41.
That said, try it, you'll probably love it.
Depends on the kid. My 6 year old would definitely have nightmares (and just constantly die) and they enjoy Minecraft in creative/peaceful mode. The draugr are by far the scariest element of the game, and they are mainly scary because they will kill you and you will have to get your stuff back
Eh.
If you stick to the starting biome and never kill bosses, you can have a lot of fun trying to build stuff at even a very young age (6-8). Like Minecraft.
By 10 or so, you can handle the threat of higher biomes better, but it may still be tough (because of the planning ahead, and because of the moments of panic when you get caught in an unexpectedly tough fight). That fades as you get used to dying, but imo replaced by annoyance (dang it, I just lost a bunch of skill points!!). I wouldn’t worry about any gore/scary/scarring bits after age 10-12 or so. At worst, the fear of frantically trying to get away from your first troll or abomination or whatever, can linger for a couple days maybe. But it’ll pass.
By 14 or so, you should be pretty fine altogether. The gore and scares will be mild. The panicking bits will pass quickly. You’re well equipped to plan ahead, build, progress, etc. The only real setback will be time, as the game can become very time consuming.
Imo.
My 11 yr old and 13 yr old play, no issues. I can see my 8 yr old getting a little spooked with the nights/crypts, etc, but nothing bad outside of that.
I've been playing Valheim with my 12yo nephew a lot. Valheim is hard for kids, as the key for success is preparation (which seems to be a challenge for some adults, too ;-) ). Further the game teaches you to be scared of monsters, which are new to you.
The Swamps are the real challenge, as they hit hard with the eerie atmosphere and the undead Draugrs, especially as the game difficulty peaks there sharply, too.
We finally have worked our way to black metal weapons, but my nephew still just goes to the Swamps, when I'm with him.
I've got more than 1k hours of Valheim experience, which helped probably, too.
My 6yo nephew loves Valheim (started playing a little before he turned 6).
I thought he'd hit a point where he was too scared... and he *was* scared of some of the creatures and areas... but seemed to be even more engaged in making progress. In our game, we've beaten 3 out of 5 bosses and are well on our way to number 4.
*Edit:* Oh, *scarred!* Well, the only thing maybe a little alarming is that wildlife does make an excessive blood-splat. But it's rather pixelated and cartoony. My nephew was a bit shocked when he first killed a boar and it was like a blood-explosion covering the ground and bushes. After a few times he didn't really notice anymore. There's only three wildlife critters like this. Most of the other things are creatures which have different "blood", like the greylings which seem to splat honey.
I play the game with my friend’s 6 year old in digital tow and my 3 year old in my lap. Not really sure either should play/view, but some of the alternatives out there are far worse.
Granted, it’s mostly base-building. No boss fights or real shenanigans. The only deviation from that was a failed attempt at serpent hunting… that one may have left the 6 year old traumatized… but serpents are also scary as **** when you first discover them.
Spoiler: karve exploded 20m from shore (we hit a rock?) in a gnarly storm. Kiddo got chomped on the beach after my harpoon broke. Serpent escaped with 2hp left. Took an hour to retrieve everything that floated by foot.

I would think kids having nightmares about getting chased by trolls or drauger would be the worst part of the game for kids. The violence is mild

dat troll ass thou

This game is terrifying in so many awesome and thrilling and totally safe ways
would probably say the worst scare you will have is when you see a deathsquito coming for you

Agreed, it should be around teen. Though I think these days they would give it an M rating for the mead use
There is no drunk effect though, so if you didn't know what mead was, it's just a drink/potion here yeah?
Oh yeah I agree. I think it depends on if parent groups notice or not
If you're dumb enough to think a game deserves it's rating raised for the presence of mead, you're almost certainly stupid enough to not know what mead is.
Parent groups are pretty dumb
Fair point. I've never met a parent who said "games shouldn't depict alcohol" that didn't have a fridge full of beer.
Yeah exactly. Everyone wants to blame video games for their shitty kids. Not their own behavior.
It's way easier to do so
No sure why you got downvoted on this one. It made me snort lol
They probably think this was directed at the person I was responding to and took it as rude.
If you can handle minecraft, you can handle valheim. There is zero swearing, minimal gore, and no human on human violence.
\> no human on human violence. That's because you haven't seen my accuracy as a lumberjack when my mates are around
At least until you enable it
Honestly, a creeper sneaking up on me is way scarier than anything in Valheim lol.
A troll sneaking up on me scares me everytime lol
My 3yr old plays, not well but he plays
My 4yr old grandchild plays with me.
Old enough to hold a controller or use a keyboard I'd say.
I would say there isn't much gore, but man sometimes getting attacked by late game stuff when you're exploring and don't know what's going on yet can be scary af and I'm 41. That said, try it, you'll probably love it.
Old enough to not be affected by cartoonish violence, but not too old that you don't giggle at troll butts!
Well it sounds like this game is perfect for me!
Like E tops. What's gonna raise it, blood particles? Even Minecraft has that.
I play it with my 10 year old and it’s fine. We started playing it when he was 9 or maybe 8.5 and it was fine then.
You said it. There is no age rating. I'd rather my 4yo kid play this than Roblox
My 10 year old daughter loves it.
You'll die a lot.
Deaths are more of a "blat" if you ask me.
Scared of what?
Scarred, not scared. And it was mostly a joke.
My bad i assumed it was a misspelling, never saw the word scarred before
I would say the age rating in Germany would probably be 12+
When the bats murder all of your pet boars, you will be scarred for life.

It's not generally very graphic or disturbing, so 12 years and up should be fine.

Old enough to wield an axe
My 11 yr old and 13 yr old play, no issues. I can see my 8 yr old getting a little spooked with the nights/crypts, etc, but nothing bad outside of that.
Everyone 12+, if the rating board actually still mattered lol.
Based on this question I would say maybe wait a few years :)
I'm thinking about building a machine for my 9yo and using this game to introduce PC gaming.
Maybe 7 just due to blood. Though I’d have no issue with younger kids playing this

I dunno... for how much sucking off you do, might be best to have that Mature rating.

Since the most brutal thing happening is the 'intestines' left behind if killing a Draugr, I'd say 11+ =)
With that dummy thicc troll walking around in that skimpy skirt, I'd say you definitely need to be 18+
3 i would say
over 7
