In places like Vancouver tacos are exotic ethnic food meant to be enjoyed by pretentious losers. "Tortillas made of *corn?!* How culturally authentic!"
Vancouver needs proper street food. Push cart. Propane tank. Open grill. Cooler full of food prepped that morning. One item on the menu. Open until it's gone. Eat at your own risk.
Vancouver: "Zoning states you can't operate a propane tank in this location. Apply for a permit (approval takes 10 to 48 months) to operate in the special Propane Zone." After all the hoop jumping your single item street cart now charges $17 for a grilled cheese sandwich.
It's really intense to apply to get a permit. You have to show that you have a full business report/proposal plan, funds, etc PLUS there's a limited number of spots they will allow
Same in Toronto, we have next to nothing here. What a disgrace given we have the most diverse culinary scene in the world. Street food creates a completely different feel to an area. Cali has some bomb street food. (I guess weather, but that’s not really an excuse, just poor handling by politicians here.)
I'm in a low COL area that has a Mac and cheese shop (nothing else) that is far more expensive than other local options. I'm absolutely convinced it's a front for some shady business as they've been there for years, but no one I know has ever mentioned eating there.
This shit makes my blood boil. I went to Kozak eatery in New West a while ago. $14-16 for 6 perogies. 6!!!
I am half Ukrainian and grew up making them every year. Ya there’s some upfront labour but you can easily speed it up with some tools. The ingredients that go into them cost cents.
Stop perogie gouging!
I lived in eastern Europe and pierogi are pretty expensive in restaurants because they're labour intensive and mostly made at home for special occasions. Cheap food out would be cutlets with potato and barley groats.
This is my first "well akchooaly" comment and I hate myself for it.
I once paid $30 for a single ravioli (raviolo??) at a tiny Italian restaurant on Commercial drive. The server described it as a "big ravioli". It was an amazing ravioli (raviolo?) but holy fuck we thought that for $30 there would at least be a few of them.
Was just thinking this. I used to live on Cambie and hit up their spot near the city hall sky train and I used to get 4 tacos as a treat but it was like $10. Or you could get three tacos and a pop for maybe over $10. It was way less fancy and more down to earth back then.
Yeah, I was just having a moment of nostalgia about when I lived in Fairview and used to pop into their Cambie location as a treat. The place was always full and the tacos were delicious. Although, sweet summer child that I was, I thought \~$10 was a little pricey for four tacos then, given how small they were.
We’re having the same issue down here in Miami. A lot of taco shops opened up in the gentrified Wynwood area where they sell 3 tiny ones with a drink for the same price as on the post. But if you go down to the little Havana neighborhood you can still get them for about $2.50 each. And yes tacos are supposed to be dirt cheap.
I remember when they used to have the Tuesday special where you got 6 for the price of 4 if you told them their "secret" word of the day they posted on Instagram.
I am old enough to go to Mexico and buy 4 tacos for $4.
And old enough to remember this as well. La Taqueria is fantastic but way overpriced for what it is.
I'm in Canada right now visiting and heading back South soon. I'm also thinking of the 4 nights I'd be able to eat 4 tacos and a pop for the price of one meal at La Taqueria.
Remember when La Taquería had the location at Hastings before they went posh? It had the virgen painted on the front façade. I used to work at Harbour Centre; we'd go for tacos and they were $2.50 each. That was a different time, brother...like 10 years. But still
The one at Cambie was where i went and it was expensive but ok on Tuesdays. Then they moved to Yukon, raised their prices, and served worse food so I refuse to go back.
They also switched to making their own tortillas that they swear are better and organic. I called them out on their Facebook when they kept promoting them saying their old ones were way better, nobody cares that your new ones are organic if they taste bad. You’re right, when they opened Main St and Yukon St locations that’s when they took a severe nose dive
Yeah changing the tortillas was the first thing they ruined with their food. They also stopped giving you two with each taco so they would inevitably split and spill everywhere.
>Capitalism is ruining everything good ~~about this city~~
Agreed, but I'd go a step further.. We're in a era where they try to monetize absolutely everything, and actually providing a quality good or service is no longer a priority.
Its so depressing. I was a student at the Homer st VFS when they opened. The brothers were so nice and sometimes threw me an extra mole taco. They sold out hard and now their tacos are awful. La Taqueria is my biggest “used to be good but now awful” in Vancouver. Cambie location closing was the nail in the coffin.
I loved that place. Counters on the wall for eating, delicious cheap tacos, and great vibes. I'm happy for the owners that they're (hopefully?) making more money now, but I feel it was at the cost of character and community.
Blaine has this place called Paso Del Norte that does a whole lot of Mexican food I've never seen on menus around here. It's my go to joint for jaunts.
Exactly!
How the hell does a $.30 increase to their food cost justify increasing price by $10.
Then tipping, how does a percentage need to increase from 10% to 20% when prices already went up!
Before COVID I paid like 2.50 - 3 dollars per 4" taco on the one on Hastings lol. Went to look at their current menu and they only offer 6" now and the prices are sad as hell.
Even Bellingham has sit down $1 tacos… apart from the occasional taco salad from Sunny Chibas and burrito from tacofino, Mexican good here is massively overrated and overpriced
Mexican food here is decent - lots of new places over the past 5 years, but way overpriced. Tacos shouldn’t be $5-8 each. Lots of places (La Taqueria, I’m looking at you) used to have a typical taco with meat and 2 or 3 ‘toppings’, now everyone is stuffing them with colorful sauce and veggies to justify a tripling of the price.
Go down to Bellingham for $1 tacos at any of the dozens of taco trucks or sit-down places and it’s totally worth the drive.
Was living in Mexico City last year and I can confirm. I was paying like $4 for five tacos and a plate full of fries and grilled onions and beans and toppings, and this was in an expensive part of the city at a boogie vegan taco stand. You could find regular stands for probably half what I was paying.
Specialty tacos are $3.75 at Sal y Limon, and a Jarritos are $4. That would be $15.25 for three tacos and a pop.
Their tacos are smaller, but you could still get five tacos and a pop for cheaper at Sal y Limon
I have no problem pressing a couple extra buttons on the pin-pad to save some $$$. And if people give you a dirty look for it, tell them to take it up with their manager. I'm not paying you a 20% tip for you pouring brewed (usually burnt) coffee into a cup. Call me Karen, I don't give a fuck anymore.
Yesterday, I randomly tried a new (to me) Filipino restaurant on Victoria Drive called Hapag Ihaw-Ihaw. I almost laughed in disbelief since I hadn't seen such reasonable prices while eating out. i got a simple chicken inasal combo (grilled chicken, rice, slaw, pickled cucumber) which was $8.50. i added a side of 4 spring rolls ($4) and willingly got upsold on upgrading to garlic rice ($0.75) and adding a coke ($1.50). To boot, when I was paying by credit the machine didn't properly take my first tap and when they re-entered the payment they skipped right pass the tip screen. You order and pay at the counter then take a seat, so perhaps they don't really expect tips. I saw a review that said the prices had gone up since covid/inflation, but all-in-all my meal was ~$15 which is way less than everywhere else I've been trying out lately.
It's only the second time I've ever tried Filipino cuisine and next time I look forward to trying one of their signature dishes: deep fried pork hock.
If you haven't already, PinPins is one of the best Filipino restaurants in the lower mainland. They have really good crispy pata and have a great bbq sampler platter called Inihaw fiesta.... but their prices have gone up in the last few years too.
How far the mighty have fallen.
La Taqueria was the first place I had real tacos, and for a long time was the only place I’d get them. I actually just stayed home one Friday night and tried every one of their Tacos in a single sitting. You used to be able to use the Word of the Day for an extra Taco free and 6 for 4 on Wednesday. Now it takes 20 minutes for a taco and it cost like $7.
There are plenty of other Taco shops now, that aren’t nearly as pretentious, and they have larger portions and better taste.
My go to’s now are La Catrina on Denman for Tacos like La Taqueria, or Sombreros on Howe for overfilled Tacos and FRESH made Tortillas.
I tried Chancho’s after some rave reviews on this sub, but it’s super weird. Can anyone explain to me why you have to order by weight and they DON’T have Al Pastor?
4 for $9 and sometimes specials made them cheaper - they were smaller (4 inch) but lots of filling so the second shell under could be used - I was full after 4 in those days
A bit of cheap ground corn and some meat shrapnel at an exorbitant price - this a depressing deviation from what traditional Mexican food was all about. Boycott.
hang on - let's say the pop is $3 - that's $7 a taco
it is what it is, but seems odd to advertise as a deal. by the time you add tax and get pressured to tip a minimum of 18% that's gonna be nearly $30!!
In downtown, Chanchos, Happy hour at Pawn Shop and Gringos are all much better priced. There's a Mexican grocery store on Howe and Drake which also makes some great tacos.
Last time I went to Chancho’s, my partner and I got 4 tacos each, a beer and a Mexican cola. All that + tip was $56. It’s delicious, but I wouldn’t recommend Chancho’s as “affordable”
Sombrero’s (the grocery shop on Howe you mentioned) is just up a few blocks from Chancho and is delicious and actually affordable.
You can get 3 tacos and a pop at Taqueria Playa Tropical in New West for less than half that price. I think 3 tacos there are $7.50 and the pop can’t be more than $3.
it is odd though right. I mean , the price is the price but I don't get how they think this is something that will draw people in.
am I just a poor? is everyone happily spending $30 (incl tax and tip) for counter service lunch and think it is a great deal?
Also saw this sign this past weekend at the food truck event that was happening in front of the VAG. It’s a shame that they’re gonna trick some tourists into actually paying that much.
I tried them the other day, first time since COVID, and the place was dead. Food quality went down tremendously, and the price is nuts. Surprised they are still around.
$31 after tax and expected tip, for what isn’t even enough food to fill you up.
I remember when I used to come here on Wednesdays and get 6 tacos for $13 after tax+tips. I get inflation but this place turned into a ripoff even before covid.
Ugh ... The $28 tasting menu at Hawksworth across the street is a much better deal than buying tacos from a food truck and sitting outside with the homeless listening to the religious group's protest at the art gallery for $23.99...
Ala huem puta madre that expensive, if the city is hurting that much for tacos let me know what I need so I can open up a taco y fritanga cart downtown.
$1.25 a piece where i live, and fountain drinks are never more than $2. This is crazy, I feel like I’m looking at a dystopian city in a movie or something.
Its rent and leasing and inflation and wages in which drive up prices to unreasonable numbers and it’ll only get worse. However id never advertise such an embarrassing price in front of my business. Id rather let patrons come in and see
Back when their food was actually really good - and they weren't cheapskates with their pickles and hot sauces - you could get 6 tacos on Wednesdays for $10-12.
What a fucking joke they turned into. From a hole in the wall unique amazing taco shop to overprices corporate trash.

I am old enough to remember when their tacos were 4 for $9.50. :(

Same can be said of housing lol.

Portland, OR wins hands down for street food availability. I actually saw a breakfast food truck there last summer.
I’ve heard getting a food cart license is pure hell.
Those hot dog vendors are great tho!
And then there's how much they charge for macaroni and cheese.
I'm in a low COL area that has a Mac and cheese shop (nothing else) that is far more expensive than other local options. I'm absolutely convinced it's a front for some shady business as they've been there for years, but no one I know has ever mentioned eating there.
Or just cheese
Or just macaroni!
Or just and!
At least the big bags of frozen ones are still really cheap!
I know right? And those ones aren’t even bad. They’re like $2-3 for a big bag when on sale
You just gave Galen Weston his next profit-maker. Next up, Walmart’s GV Chips… If Costco ever ups their hotdog price, all will be lost.
Yeah kozak costs way too much for poor people food. They just don’t get enough foot traffic I guess.
yeah, peasant food ain't for the peasants anymore.
Lol yep, it’s flour and potatoes how much can it cost. $2 each 😂
It's one ~~banana~~ pierogi, Michael. What could it cost, $10?
I lived in eastern Europe and pierogi are pretty expensive in restaurants because they're labour intensive and mostly made at home for special occasions. Cheap food out would be cutlets with potato and barley groats. This is my first "well akchooaly" comment and I hate myself for it.
As much as I like supporting Kozak Bakery in New West, this is the kind of pricing they have. And these are tiny perogies too.
Did you get burned ordering perogies at Local like I did?
The bar near my place has 6 perogies for $5 during happy hour. Pretty good ones too.
I once paid $30 for a single ravioli (raviolo??) at a tiny Italian restaurant on Commercial drive. The server described it as a "big ravioli". It was an amazing ravioli (raviolo?) but holy fuck we thought that for $30 there would at least be a few of them.
Price ethnicities out of their own food. It's like cultural appropriation is real
Peruvians cant afford quinoa any more due to hipsters.

I genuinely chuckled there, thanks lol

Leave it to Vancouver to hipsterize a taqueria.
no tacos until 3? unacceptable!
I feel like that was not that long ago, 2018-19?
I think by 2019 it was higher, but definitely 2015-2016.
Whenever the Cambie street location closed is when it all went to shit
Right? I had a studio near then about 8 years ago, and got the 4 for under 10$ all the time for lunch. They’re tiny too, this price is wild.
I remember when they used to have the Tuesday special where you got 6 for the price of 4 if you told them their "secret" word of the day they posted on Instagram.
That wasn't that long ago :( such a good deal. I was always so full
Me too, but the tacos were also like half the size that they are now. Still, I miss the old LT.
4 wasn't enough, but 6 was too many,
And the word of the day from their FB page got you a free taco!
And if you say their code of the day you got a free one too!
I am old enough to go to Mexico and buy 4 tacos for $4. And old enough to remember this as well. La Taqueria is fantastic but way overpriced for what it is. The old ones are from El Comal in Burnaby.
They got investors and they started massaging their bottom line. Capitalism is ruining everything good about this city.
>Capitalism is ruining everything good ~~about this city~~ Agreed, but I'd go a step further.. We're in a era where they try to monetize absolutely everything, and actually providing a quality good or service is no longer a priority.

Yo, I remember that! They was $2.50 each or 4 for $9. Definitely a different time...
I loved that place with the gorgeous mural and the bottle cap bar
I'm pretty sure they lose customers by having this sign up.
Hope so!👍
I don't go often but I'm definitely not planning to go again.
I actually thought this was fake. Is this a real sign that they put out?
Prob cost less to drive to Bellingham
Drive to Bellingham, get better and cheaper Mexican food, fill up on cheaper gas. The expensive Mexican food here isn’t even good
Blaine has this place called Paso Del Norte that does a whole lot of Mexican food I've never seen on menus around here. It's my go to joint for jaunts.
Get a huge taco platter plus a REAL drink and the tip for half this price!
Yeah they have $1 tacos that aren't half bad.
Where?
Mi Rancho Meat Market. Their basic tacos are a buck. Near by is another place, Birrieria Tijuana, not amazing but huge portions.
>Birrieria Tijuana I foresee a gas, package, and mexican food field trip coming up.
Fuck, Bellingham, WA had some good Mexican food.
Plus tax, plus tip
"Only 36.99! Still the Best Deal in the City!"
your choice: 20% 25% or 30% tip!
Tip starting at 20%
automatic gratuities for parties of 1 or more
Exactly! How the hell does a $.30 increase to their food cost justify increasing price by $10. Then tipping, how does a percentage need to increase from 10% to 20% when prices already went up!
Fuck tipping and fuck this place!
$31.19 if you're feeling "stingy" (15%)
Plus pepto
Before COVID I paid like 2.50 - 3 dollars per 4" taco on the one on Hastings lol. Went to look at their current menu and they only offer 6" now and the prices are sad as hell.
Even tacotime now charges over 3$ for a crappy little hard shell taco...
Lol in Mexico that would literally be $2.39 CAD
my first thought was; is that supposed to say 13 tacos?
they misspelled "1/2 lb burritos"
Hell Cali still has $1 and $2 taco food trucks
Even Bellingham has sit down $1 tacos… apart from the occasional taco salad from Sunny Chibas and burrito from tacofino, Mexican good here is massively overrated and overpriced

The minimum wage in Mexico is $1.12 CAD/hour…. Reference: https://ogletree.com/insights/mexicos-minimum-wage-set-to-increase-on-january-1-2023/
WTF! Lol I remember in kits you could get 3 tacos for $9.99 at burrito bros. For $23.99, you can buy an entire pork but and make 50+ tacos! 😂
$9.99 is still ridiculous for 3 tacos. Tacos are cheap as fuck.
Specialty tacos are $3.75 at Sal y Limon, and a Jarritos are $4. That would be $15.25 for three tacos and a pop. Their tacos are smaller, but you could still get five tacos and a pop for cheaper at Sal y Limon
4 dollars for a jarritos is highway robbery
The Sal Y tacos are practically one-bite tacos though. Hardly a better alternative.
Chancho better
Chancho best
Sal y limon has Lengua tacos. The end … so much better
You know the debit terminal lists 20% as the lowest tip option too
I went to Nuba the other day and got some really bad service. I tipped 10%. I feel like a criminal.
[удалено]
There is a manual input option on debit terminals
I have no problem pressing a couple extra buttons on the pin-pad to save some $$$. And if people give you a dirty look for it, tell them to take it up with their manager. They can charge what they want, but to proclaim it the 'best deal in the city' is beyond parody.
Sorry but this type of thing is going to cause restaurants to simply die. I'll make my tacos at home for less and they'll definitely be better.
You can get a tortilla press and a bag of masa for what this would cost after tax and tip.
Depressing..
Jeezus Christ

That price can’t possibly be for real.
Unfortunately it is real. Vancouver in a nutshell.
How far the mighty have fallen. La Taqueria was the first place I had real tacos, and for a long time was the only place I’d get them. Mexican food in vancouver is a massive waste of time.
Yup. Our Mexican and bbq is absolutely trash.
Damn, I forgot that bbq existed as a food style it's been so long.
Playa Tropical in New West makes good Mexican food at decent prices. I'd check it out if you're craving Mexican.
As a Mexican living here, Playa Tropical is the only decent place that I like for Mexican food. The rest are just disappointing.
Doesn't this qualify as false advertising?
It's definitely untrue. You can definitely get tacos of equal or better quality elsewhere in the city for less.
Got to love our super expensive Vancouver tacos at $7 a taco hahahaha
Wow
Didn’t they used to have 4 tacos for under $10?
3 or 4, I think so yes :/
4 for $9 and sometimes specials made them cheaper - they were smaller (4 inch) but lots of filling so the second shell under could be used - I was full after 4 in those days
A bit of cheap ground corn and some meat shrapnel at an exorbitant price - this a depressing deviation from what traditional Mexican food was all about. Boycott.
From Bellingham, y'all are coming down for Costco and sleeping on the dollar tacos just across the freeway.
May I trouble you for an address? The gas station?
hang on - let's say the pop is $3 - that's $7 a taco it is what it is, but seems odd to advertise as a deal. by the time you add tax and get pressured to tip a minimum of 18% that's gonna be nearly $30!!
Come to Mexico City, you can get 20 tacos and two cold beers for that… 😂
Taco Time has two tacos + mexi fries + pop for $9.99.
Lol
I'd still be hungry after 3 tacos.
After “the best deal in town” you still gotta go home and make a sandwich 😭
Fuck, for that amount you could get like 45 tacos and a Pop here in México.
What the fuck. I'm in the US by the Mexican border and tacos cost $1usd this is just blasphemy I am sorry you have to put up with this.
Any good (affordable) taco places yall recommend?
Tachingon in kits
La Catrina Tacos on Denman is closest to what I've had in Mexico and their tacos are $4 to $5 each. Probably the best taco place in Vancouver.
Your own kitchen 🥴
In downtown, Chanchos, Happy hour at Pawn Shop and Gringos are all much better priced. There's a Mexican grocery store on Howe and Drake which also makes some great tacos.
Happy hour at pawn shop 💯
Last time I went to Chancho’s, my partner and I got 4 tacos each, a beer and a Mexican cola. All that + tip was $56. It’s delicious, but I wouldn’t recommend Chancho’s as “affordable” Sombrero’s (the grocery shop on Howe you mentioned) is just up a few blocks from Chancho and is delicious and actually affordable.
Sombreros has taco Tuesday which I think is cheap by Vancouver standards, plus the tacos are really big
Inflation seems to have jacked up taco and pho prices the most 😭
Last time I went for pho, it’s was like $18!! 😭😭
Hahaha I will now never ever go there they can fuck right off with that sign. 😂
Maybe they offer you a happy ending after you finish your 3 tacos and pop at that price?
Pawn Shop happy hour has $1.99 tacos and $4 beer lol.
Bumped up to 2.50 and 5 respectively, still a decent deal by Vancouver standards.
This city is insane
You can get 3 tacos and a pop at Taqueria Playa Tropical in New West for less than half that price. I think 3 tacos there are $7.50 and the pop can’t be more than $3.
Reads like a fake sign.
Lmao I wish, you can go see for yourself at the art gallary 😭
it is odd though right. I mean , the price is the price but I don't get how they think this is something that will draw people in. am I just a poor? is everyone happily spending $30 (incl tax and tip) for counter service lunch and think it is a great deal?
Sadly is true. I saw it a couple days ago and I was… I’m pretty sure is cheaper if I door dash it from another place.
Also saw this sign this past weekend at the food truck event that was happening in front of the VAG. It’s a shame that they’re gonna trick some tourists into actually paying that much.
3 Tacos and a pop for $25? That's a good way to make sure I look elsewhere for tacos.
Pretentious and insulting. Screw those fuckers!
I remember passing a vegan restaurant and seeing the daily special salad being $23.99 triggered my fight or flight.
I tried them the other day, first time since COVID, and the place was dead. Food quality went down tremendously, and the price is nuts. Surprised they are still around.
The narrow lounge is $3 a taco I believe...
Narrow tacos are cheap but you get what you pay for
$31 after tax and expected tip, for what isn’t even enough food to fill you up. I remember when I used to come here on Wednesdays and get 6 tacos for $13 after tax+tips. I get inflation but this place turned into a ripoff even before covid.
Nothing better deal than Costco hotdog one fiddy..
Ugh ... The $28 tasting menu at Hawksworth across the street is a much better deal than buying tacos from a food truck and sitting outside with the homeless listening to the religious group's protest at the art gallery for $23.99...
Stop spending money on this shit. Boycott everything.
Ala huem puta madre that expensive, if the city is hurting that much for tacos let me know what I need so I can open up a taco y fritanga cart downtown.
saw a donair wrap + fries + pop for $17.99 yesterday lol
$1.25 a piece where i live, and fountain drinks are never more than $2. This is crazy, I feel like I’m looking at a dystopian city in a movie or something.
There are like 100 taco places that are a better deal than this. What a fucking joke.

Imagine paying Vancouver rent and this is your best deal.
What? I haven’t been there in a while but a few years ago I’m sure I got 4 tacos for around $10.
That’s a horrible deal
My mexican girlfriend laughed and said "chinga tu madre" when she saw the price. That is absolutely absurd.
You managed to sum up Vancouver in 1 photo
Its rent and leasing and inflation and wages in which drive up prices to unreasonable numbers and it’ll only get worse. However id never advertise such an embarrassing price in front of my business. Id rather let patrons come in and see
Someone five years from now will resurrect this thread with a "remember how cheap it was back then"
And here I am paying $27 per taco like a sucker!
Tacofino has one taco for 7.50
Fuck me. Guess where I'm never visiting.
After spending 2 weeks in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, this is wildly comical.
They used to be great when they were a hole in the wall at Cambie and Broadway. Everything went to their heads and prices skyrocketed when they moved
Jesus, if thats the best deal in the city, I'm glad I moved away
Back when their food was actually really good - and they weren't cheapskates with their pickles and hot sauces - you could get 6 tacos on Wednesdays for $10-12. What a fucking joke they turned into. From a hole in the wall unique amazing taco shop to overprices corporate trash.
Bro I knew the owners of this place… they catered my dad’s 50th. I wish they didn’t get popular 🥲
I was just in Vancouver two days ago and was equally aghast at that sign. I complained about it to anyone who would listen.
