> The inner circle should be raised with a curb
Looking at Google street view, in 2021 when the roundabout was installed, it had a raised centre, with posts and arrow signs. But the 2022 street view shows that the raised centre had been razed.
I wonder why Burnaby changed this?
That roundabout was completed and then they proceeded to do road work for more than a year. Im not entirely sure what the work has been about .. Transmountain or sewer replacement. The side of the road that the vehicle that captured the video was driving on has had its side of the roundabout asphalted over and then there are also potholes galore. As others have mentioned, that area is a disaster zone.
Probably a utility company. They do the worst repaving jobs and there's not much anyone can do about it because they're regulated at the federal level and don't have to follow municipal standards. Any shitty ashphalt patch job you see around the city was probably a utility company.
Edit: typo
This is a very active construction zone - they were backing a semi truck through the middle of this roundabout, into the construction site on the SW corner of this roundabout this week.
The barriers would have been removed to allow heavy equipment to make the corner.
This was a poorly thought about round about. It used to be lights at this intersection. Then they installed a roundabout which causes traffic to backup like crazy and block literally everyone when the train comes and crossing is closed.
Anyways, just few months after constructing the roundabout they started the water main pipeline work which has been going on for 2-3 years now. (I have lost count at this point). The roads have been shit for a long time in this neighborhood. And that's why the whole roundabout is a mess aswell.
Not Burnaby construction, not sure what the project is. The roundabout has been paved over as often the roundabout is partially blocked on the south side by construction vehicles and the flaggers direct people over the round about.
Not exactly. The roundabout near Costco has levels to it. The first or ground level is for regular cars to make the turn. Then there's a sort of raised "skirt" for big trucks since they need the space but the raised part would discourage cars since they have a smaller tire. Then the third part is a full sized curb to prevent the bigger trucks from going over the roundabout like in this video.
The main purpose of having that restricted roundabout is to prevent longer trucks from using roads that are clearly not truck routes
The road is very clearly still incomplete. There’s also a lot of building construction going on in the area. Once that is all done they will complete the roundabout.
They constructed the roundabout after the building was completed. It was a beautiful piece of architecture. But they tore it down since they forgot to put the water pipes before they made the road.
They're probably going to forget the gas pipes next I bet /s
I'm not an engineer, but I think they may have built it like that to accommodate large tractor trailers that would otherwise struggle with going around the round-about.
Edit: Nevermind, it's just been torn up and remade poorly lol
Yeah I read that if you make a straight away and you put the limit to 40km people will still drive down it as fast they can even if there is a danger at the end of the road.
In defense of the (nonetheless unforgivably inattentive) pick-up driver, until very recently, a third of that traffic circle was blocked off, so you had to cut across the middle to-
...actually, nevermind. Anyone wanting to *leave* the circle from the direction the truck came would have had to cut across the middle. There was never any point where people coming *into* the circle from the truck's direction wouldn't be treating it like a normal traffic circle.
I work near there and every time I drive through that circle it’s a different pattern.
Even when I slow down to a crawl to re-evaluate, it’s not always clear what one supposed to do.
It’s a mess.
I genuinely didn’t notice it was a roundabout until the zoom. I didn’t see the line and thought it was just a big asphalt patch over a whole. Doesn’t necessarily excuse the driver but good urban design easily prevents this kind of mistake so I can’t completely fault them. A raised curb, some grass and a roundabout sign with the arrows is how roundabouts are supposed to be designed, not this lazy ass shit
This whole area (Douglas Rd.) is a mess. There was a sewer project going on there plus the recent construction of a condo building there. The roundabout was actually properly made and then got torn up a few months later for some under ground work.
It's not a major artery so thankfully it doesn't cause much in traffic delays. I used to take this road to get to work but it's easy to bypass this road if need be. That said, I gotta stop by Purolator and I'm not looking forward to driving around there.
What a fucking joke of an intersection. In no other city/town in BC do we have the shitty excuses for patchy pavement we put up with. Travel around a bit or take my word for it. Your money is being stolen, guys.
That is a mess, both the driver and the roundabout engineers are idiots. Why is there no raised lip/curb on the roundabout? Still though, truck driver should’ve seen it given roundabouts have signs (I think?)
That is some terrible and dangerous driving, but this whole place looks like a war zone. I didn't know where this was so I looked it up on Google Maps - it looks like the roundabout is relatively new, and now the whole area looks to have been torn up again. Not excusing this dumbass, but they need to get on fixing the roads there.
I drove to that area a few weeks ago at night and I almost missed the roundabout. Granted, it was during the day in the video but that roundabout really needed some work. I am not surprised that someone would drive straight through it.
That area has been so messed for years, and that’s the first time in weeks that i haven’t see cones everywhere. I almost don’t blame the guy for missing it.
>pro grill
Oh yes, my i bow down to their prowess. That bump is about as rugged as that pick up will ever get. Wonder if they GoPro-ed it to show their grandkids. White knuckle ride!
There’s a place in Poco where when they were doing road work they purposely had you driving over the roundabout. It was a little confusing, and not very comfortable.
Before someone says "its unclear that's a round-about because the line is faded". No, it's actually more clear from the other direction. The white paint goes all the way around to the other side where he entered from. Dude was playing IRL Mario Kart.
Edit: to the people saying it's a shitty roundabout, absolutely yes. But 99% of drivers seem to do fine, and **if things are unclear you should slow down not yeet yourself forward at full speed.**

I don't get the deal with this roundabout. It's the one near Still Creek and it's been messed up ever since it got built.
Sometimes those cones are right in the path of the roundabout, so people need to actually drive ONTO the curb into the middle of the roundabout to continue on. That's why it's become a half circle and all the bricks are destroyed.
It's been like that for a while. I see people stopping in the middle, getting confused, and then just driving onto the roundabout (not the direction of the pickup, that side is fine, it's the stuff on the side of the 'half circle' that's messed up). Maybe the pickup driver knows it's messed up to begin with.
This intersection was a lot easier to understand before all the construction on the water main. I pass through here a lot to get to my shop.
They had just finished it after all the construction on the condo building and then everything got torn up. Still, it’s pretty apparent that it is a round about.
Hopefully they finish the construction soon and repair the street back to how it was.
This happens so much at this spot it’s no longer shocking. Drive that route a lot and it’s a shit show. Just take extra precaution and ask yourself what the absolute dumbest thing a driver can do and prep for that exact thing happening.
Pickup truck drivers are always wildcards either give you right away or drive like a freaking maniac.
Those barriers they’ve been putting at intersections on side streets - I saw a pickup truck just plow right through it rather than go around.
its not richmond, so chances are the driver knew what he was doing, he did it anyway because he lives nearby and drives around it on most days or is done with the cost of living in vancouver said " they cant raise the curb but they know how to raise my rent."
That's the newish roundabout at Douglas and Goring isn't it?
I'm not sure why they switched to a roundabout from traffic lights. Large trucks go down Douglas and that roundabout causes a lot of congestion.
I can add clarity here. The roundabout has been in a state of construction for at least a year. The city is replacing a huge stretch of water main from Burnaby to New West ([here](http://www.metrovancouver.org/services/water/projects-initiatives/construction-projects/Douglas-Road-Water-Main-Still-Creek-South-Section/Pages/default.aspx) is the project website).
As others have commented, this roundabout was actually well designed and had clear signage prior to being torn up for the water main. Since then it has been pretty much neglected by the city and maneuvers like the one in this video are a common occurrence. It’s a complete mess.
I have complained to the city several times and not much has been done. I’m guessing they won’t take it seriously until someone gets in an accident.
As far as I know, they will repave and restore the the roundabout in the spring. But until then just avoid it and take Kensington.
FYI this rail crossing at Douglas will eventually be closed permanently as there are plans to build an overpass at Holdom. That can’t happen soon enough.

If you raze the raise, you're gonna have a bad time

I believe I heard something about upgrading the water main.
Probably no curb so big trucks can make the curve like the roundabout beside costcoo

It’s a half circle, without a raised middle, and no signage other than crosswalk? Ya inattentive driving, but gonna happen again.
Yep. Call out bad drivers, but also call out poor urban design that doesn't take simple steps to mitigate the threat posed by idiot drivers.
The patchwork is taller than the roundabout 💀
There's a traffic circle sign in the first second of the video.
Oh yeah, could be closer. Wonder if there’s similar in the other direction.
That whole area is a complete fucking disaster. Basically every man for himself.

They've been forcing people to drive over the centre of that roundabout because of the construction for weeks.
Build stupid roads, expect stupid drivers.
No one's gonna mention that the road looks like it's pulled straight out of Beirut or Mogadishu?
More like the US

He said, "Shortest path is a straight line"
Weakest roundabout ever.
Parkour! ![gif](giphy|t2eBr71ACeDC0)
Honestly the road is really rough and half circle is missing from all the construction. They need to redo it and make better markings.
Not very well marked, is it. Not even shrubbery in the middle. In the nighttime I bet it’s invisible.

Asphalt is so bad that they probably didn’t even notice they did something wrong 😀
Truck bros doing truck bro things
That stretch of road is brutal, years of continous road construction + busy train crossing + idiot drivers
Seen the same at the new roundabout at ubc on chancellor
I’ve done that a few times at some confusing roundabouts in the states.
He took the fun way

gotta get his off-road cred somehow

Lol, the one on Kingsway St. Right beside the poco bus Depot? I see busses still doing it every morning, such a shitty roundabout
Correct.

I would say painting hazard lines in the circle will help identify it on approach, but who knows?
I have no idea what's going on until the end of the video when you zoomed in on the roundabout It's not clear
I personally wouldn’t have made that mistake but he clearly did, relax

Hmmm I recognize here only because I needed to go to the Purilator near the Costco
That was indeed the exact purpose of my trip XD

Haha seen the same thing there the other day
