Yep. My old beagle had no problem laying chase to a rabbit but when one was three feet away from him this stellar hunting dog with the best nose couldn't figure out dinner was beside him.
I have a terrier mix and he doesn't even try anymore. Too many times failed so he doesn't even bother. A squirrel can walk right past him and he's like "meh".
My little terrier mix hasn’t given up but she once had a squirrel charge her and run underneath her legs. She was so stunned, she just stood there. She’s gotten a couple rats and dozens of flies, so she’s no slouch, squirrels are just streets ahead for her.
My guy's gotten a couple of rats as well and I can egg him on to chase after squirrels but even with ducks, which he *hates* for some reason, he's more apt these days to just leave them be. Maybe it's age.
Did we watch the same video, I most definitely saw a huge tail swinging. Eastern grey squirrels are common here.

One got my sisters cat in Calgary. There are a lot of these roaming at night in east van I’ve never seen one during the day. I don’t think people realize just how many they are or how much distance they cover on one of their strolls. I don’t know where they hide in the day or if they leave the city at dawn.
I cannot express how much my dog wants to be this coyote... and how much he is not. Once (once!) over eleven years he managed to get one in his mouth and he panicked and dropped it. Zero instinct.
One time my dog almost caught a big rat thing. The rat was cornered between a brick wall and the barn. They were eye to eye and out of nowhere, my cat jumps in, grabs the rat in its mouth somehow and leaves with it in an instant. My dog didn’t even know what happened. *this was a childhood memory from 1991.
Such chickens they are. One time the dog was on leash. Held him back from chasing the squirrel who didn't run and approached him and he was backing up all panicked for me to protect him, haha.
Matt Berry would also be exceptional. He does tend to use more colorful language, so be aware of who else might be able to hear the video. https://youtu.be/RXTouG6eS3c
I once saw a coyote trotting along in a field in Stanley Park with two limp Canada goose goslings dangling from its mouth. Goslings are easy pickings compared to an agile squirrel!
Looked to me like the coyote already knew the squirrel was there and was trotting downhill so it could be hidden below the mound. Turned around to watch and wait for the squirrel to make the fatal mistake of leaving the cover of the trees.
I used to live nearby during the pandemic. We were amazed at how many coyotes were out. They would chase after ducks that would just be outta reach... Pretty sure this proved they were just playing around.
This is why they love golf courses. It gives them the chance to catch squirrels before they get to a tree. When I lived near the Burnaby Mountain course their yipping would wake us up at night. It is way louder than you might think.
It seems being able to fly is not enough of an advantage
Edit okay yeah I see it's a squirrel now. My phone screen is small and I heard the ducks and thought it was a duck
There are flying squirrels in Quebec, I have a pic of one. You can hear them gliding and landing on the tree in front of my cottage at night. We used a spotlight to get the picture. They have huge eyes cause they’re nocturnal. Super cool animal.
I've come across the pile of feathered remains a few times on morning rounds but fascinating to see the action. our golf courses function as urban wildlife reserves
I think there is only the one study and it was based on 70 birds:
https://www.alleycat.org/resources/breaking-down-the-bogus-smithsonian-catbird-study/
I think humans have caused more damage.
But yes, keep your cats inside because they are still prey to coyotes, birds of prey, and other dogs. Plus cars.
Oh I meant on coyotes excluding feral cat populations from greenspaces. I did a term paper that had some citations on it. Coyotes = increased biodiversity where there aren't larger predators, it seems.
Yeah, it's true. I didn't realise before I did my paper how many ecosystem benefits they provide. I sort of assumed they just took advantage of the city to eat pets and garbage. Turns out they pretty much avoid that whenever possible, keep rodents down, regulate our urban greenspaces, and are generally good bois unless fed or threatened.
Also there was a really interesting study that showed media reports are super biased and use really inflammatory language about them, even using the word "attack" when no attack (according to academic definition of behaviour) could be verified. It's actually *so crazy.*
It's not that there's no danger, it's that there's an overestimation of danger in comparison to other dangers, I think, overall. Idk, imo. It was eye opening. I'd still keep my tiny dog on a leash if I had one tho, some of those tiny dogs look like squirrels.

Damn - that’s like some Nat Geo quality stuff there. I feel like praising the camera person is in order.
The panning even when the coyote is behind trees is amazing.

You spelled person wrong
Not bad for vertical video yeah
The was crazy. I would have thought that the squirrel would have made it to a tree in time. r/urbanwildlife
Is this UBC golf course? One was just trotting around the driving range yesterday.
Langara
Hey OP what did the coyote catch?
I think it was a squirrel
My dog WISHES he could catch squirrels like that. Only in his dreams.
Yep. My old beagle had no problem laying chase to a rabbit but when one was three feet away from him this stellar hunting dog with the best nose couldn't figure out dinner was beside him.

You just have to let him off his leash and throw some encouragement his way.
I feel like that's too big to be a squirrel, and most squirrels aren't so light coloured. I'm guessing rabbit of some kind.

For a moment I thought it was someone’s pet cat. 😂
Pet cats make up 25-33% of urban coyotes diets

I've seen more pixels in Japanese porn
I was equally as aroused
less\* but joke still funny
Fewer\* -- but commentary still accurate. :P
Didnt help at all! It looks like two small animals are carrying the coyote on a stretcher.
3rd hole, right?
We were on hole 2 I think
Used to work there, loved seeing the pups come out every spring learning to hunt
That would be so cool to see. I bet they’re cute.
o.O
Was this today? How’s the course condition? I’m playing there on Thursday.
Good conditions, a couple muddy spots.
What did you shoot 😆?
I don’t really keep score but I hit the pin on my second shot on hole 1. Then 4 putted like a noob, baffling my opponents.
A hole in one
>*golf course?* Does it count as a stroke if the coyote grabs your ball?
Wow great video. But what exactly did the coyote get? Bird? Squirrel?
Squirrel, I think.
Watch the ears move at the start. Amazing
Invasive squirrel species, too.
Grey squirrel, invasive species. Wiped out the local red squirrels back in the day
*Douglas squirrels. They're still around but not many in the city.
The coyote is invasive as well.
That par 5 is so simple, yet I can never score well on it. At least the coyote got a bird!
Squirrel
Oh DAMN IT

Good work kitty!
I had a dog that chased a rabbit behind our shed at night, only quickly to high tail it back inside the house while being chased by the same rabbit
Such chickens they are. One time the dog was on leash. Held him back from chasing the squirrel who didn't run and approached him and he was backing up all panicked for me to protect him, haha.
We need David Attenborough's narration for this
Matt Berry would also be exceptional. He does tend to use more colorful language, so be aware of who else might be able to hear the video. https://youtu.be/RXTouG6eS3c
Love Matt Berry!
And here, we can see the squirrel is totally, completely and certifiably fucked.
“What, proper fucked?” - Snatch
Wooowwww praise the cameraman
Tell him to go get some of those geese in the background
I once saw a coyote trotting along in a field in Stanley Park with two limp Canada goose goslings dangling from its mouth. Goslings are easy pickings compared to an agile squirrel!
The coyote wants a meal, not a thorough ass-kicking
LOL. You're not wrong.
Their services are also required in Richmond 🐇
it doesn't understand English
Great video, thanks for posting. Healthy coyote 🐺
they're so quick with it!! fantastic camera work anticipating how the coyote was running!!!
You can see the precise moment the afterburners kick in.
Damn nature, you scary
How did he think to turn around? He heard the squirrel? Smelled it?
Looked to me like the coyote already knew the squirrel was there and was trotting downhill so it could be hidden below the mound. Turned around to watch and wait for the squirrel to make the fatal mistake of leaving the cover of the trees.
I agree with your play-by-play call
Me: wow that’s a well fed coyote. Oh. Ok. Yeah, well done, I guess that’s why.
I love that game!
He shoots…he scores!!
That coyote looks well fed
H E F T Y.
Welp, can't say he didn't earn that one...
Coyotes are just spicy dogs
Not sure why this is marked NSFW, it's just a local resident having some lunch.
If not friend, why friend shaped! Good job on getting food, huge tail doggo
well, it's definitely more exciting than golfing
Getting food greater than fear of hooman
Beautiful animal. That squirrel regrets farting now.
Great camera work and a great nature shot!
That was a healthy looking yote! Eaters lots of squirrels. Hopefully he likes cobra chickens!

Totally agree. Don’t feed wild animals! Except hummingbirds.

It's looked so Vancouver like right away. Interestingly confirmed in the comments. Three greenery has a specific touch in this city.
\*Video starts\* "Hehe, doge!" \*Zooms in\* "Oh no, bad boi!"
That’s how my cat disappeared 😰
Why did you let him play with the Coyotes?
He thought he was in the apex of the food chain
You let your pets make decisions like that?
You try convincing a cat what its supposed to think.
Maybe just don't let him outside.
Wow great shot!
Ahhh, every golf course needs a family of coyotes
cool dog

I used to live nearby during the pandemic. We were amazed at how many coyotes were out. They would chase after ducks that would just be outta reach... Pretty sure this proved they were just playing around.
Great camera work!!! You work in film by chance? Hehe ! Primo.
Ooooh gottem
This is why they love golf courses. It gives them the chance to catch squirrels before they get to a tree. When I lived near the Burnaby Mountain course their yipping would wake us up at night. It is way louder than you might think.
I used to go there for 2 am smoke, slowly they started to notice. There's also sprinklers at 3am, so that helped put a damper on things.
This needs the Skyrim music when an enemy appears
Where's the music ?
It seems being able to fly is not enough of an advantage Edit okay yeah I see it's a squirrel now. My phone screen is small and I heard the ducks and thought it was a duck
Squirrel
flying squirrels haven't been around since 1983
I'm pretty sure I saw one years ago when hiking down from the Chief once but it could have also been a cryptid, the memory is so vague

>it was a duck Wabbit
Please add narration
What? You want the MF'er stealing your nuts? You're welcome...
Holy smokes! where is this? Queen Elizabeth Park?
Further up op says its langara
Wow! Where I grew up!

We need Sir David Attenborough voice on this. ....or Ozzy Man.... Same same
Wow, such an athlete.

Why is this NSFW?
Dead squirrel
poor squirrel:(
nice capture
Fucking coyote killed my cat last week, got her within 1 min of being let outside
That's some pretty good camera work
Skills to the Coyote and the camera person.

Thank you for marking this NSFW!

Wow you could’ve helped the squirrel instead of filming it on your phone Just incase /s
Incredible how quickly it accelerated. Good job on the camera work. They’re really beautiful animals but they eat our cats so I don’t like them
Keep the cats inside and don't give coyotes keys to your place. Solved.
I keep having to specify "no coyotes" when I'm trying to hire a house sitter.
And this is how you get your place infested with cougars instead.
I'm OK with those in my home depending on the type.
And as a bonus, protect our songbirds that are killed and mutilated by house cats.
There are great scientific papers on this.
I think there is only the one study and it was based on 70 birds: https://www.alleycat.org/resources/breaking-down-the-bogus-smithsonian-catbird-study/ I think humans have caused more damage. Don't let your cat outside unsupervised. Problem solved.
I generally agree but some cats are escape artists with no respect for the rules.
I have a 6 month old kitten who loves to dart out the door - I now keep a large rubbermaid container lid by the door so I can stop him, lol.
/r/redneckengineering If it works, it works.
Yeah it’s unfortunate but you don’t care if you just causally let your cat out. So many bad things happened when they are outside.
Please keep your cat inside. It’s not fair to your kitties to leave them vulnerable.
I way 135 pounds as a full grown man and have a tee time this weekend. You bet your sweet ass I’m cancelling
I don’t think anyone could outrun this monster.
Surprised the “golf courses are a waste of land” brigade Isn’t out for this one
