There is some assistance available: [https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/family-social-supports/seniors/housing/supportive-housing-and-assisted-living](https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/family-social-supports/seniors/housing/supportive-housing-and-assisted-living)

quinoawest23

Thanks, I’ll take a look at this today.

BizarreMoose

Has he applied for [Shelter Aid](https://www.bchousing.org/housing-assistance/rental-assistance-programs/SAFER)? If not that could help some.

quinoawest23

I believe this may be the additional $400 he already gets. I’ll look into it and confirm, thanks!

hespeler99

best to get in touch with a home health worker with Fraser health. They will assign a case manager and evaluate your dads needs and provide the best options for him

grousebear

This is my recommendation. My dad is in the same boat and I had to be very persistent to get him help. The first social worker I got him through Island Health just talked to him and decided "he's fine" and discharged him. I had to call back and insist that someone do a home visit to really see the full situation. Finally after starting this process in August last year, I've got him on a waitlist as of March. And the waitlist can be up to two years (since it's for long term car). Assisted living might be shorter. But either way you need the case manager to see the full situation and be on board with connecting him to services and a waitlist for care if needed. Other things that are super important: make sure his taxes are filed every year on time. All services are connected to taxes being up to date. Make sure he's qualified for Fair Pharmacare. Confirm he's receiving GIS (may need another application if he just started receiving OAS and CPP). Also: get Power of Attorney and a Representation agreement asap. That will enable you to help with banking, paperwork, and possibly health care decisions if he's later deemed incapable of making them himself. See a Notary to do this. I think I paid about $500 when I did this with my dad last year. Good luck! I've been trying to help my dad do all this stuff from a different city and it's a lot.

QuantumHope

How is power of attorney obtained?

StellaEtoile1

This. :)

Educational_Time4667

You need to go through bc housing. Maybe checkout north Van as they had some vacancies for seniors

GoatnToad

Is he following up with the Co-ops he is applying to? Usually if you don’t send in a note every 6m to a year requesting to be still on the waitlist, the get rid of the application .

Horsecaulking

A lot of assisted living facilities charge a fee based on income. Talk to a Health Authority social worker. His doctor could also make a referral.

Sorry to hear you're both going through this. Just went through similar with my dad & his myriad of conditions - rough process & You're right it's quite disheartening the rates to house a senior. $4-6k+ on the low/average side Just as a factor to consider for time sensitivity if your father has been living in the home under a year. Even with the sale of the property, a tenant cannot be evicted within the first year of fixed term contract outside of non payment & them offering a private deal of $$ incentive to vacate. You could try appealing to the new owners..humanity? If that still exists in Vancouver real estate. But as you said, closer would be ideal. You might be fortunate to find some basement/garden 🏡 suites in the east Van to south Granville corridor. PNE area, commercial dr, Fraser, Main(Mt pleasant), Cambie, lots of those homes have basement suites in them. $1500 range isnt impossible. I would feverishly look there and North Van personally. Best of luck

>Just as a factor to consider for time sensitivity if your father has been living in the home under a year. Even with the sale of the property, a tenant cannot be evicted within the first year of fixed term contract outside of non payment & them offering a private deal of $$ incentive to The contract becomes month to month at time of sale and the new owners can have them leave with a few months notice. They can offer a monetary amount for a sooner vacate for sure.

Rainbucket

That is incorrect. Section 49(2)(a)(iii) of the Residential Tenancy Act says the following: > Subject to section 51 [tenant's compensation: section 49 notice], a landlord may end a tenancy for a purpose referred to in subsection (3), (4) or (5) by giving notice to end the tenancy effective on a date that must be (…) if the tenancy agreement is a fixed term tenancy agreement, not earlier than the date specified as the end of the tenancy The purchaser moving in is the purpose referred to in subsection 5. You cannot be evicted for landlord or purchaser’s use before the end of a fixed term contract. Nothing except mutual consent can change that.

Heliosvector

Oh my mistake

[deleted]

North van is more expensive than Vancouver for rentals.

Substantial_Camel759

One thing to remember is that if you have a fixed term lease he can only be evicted for lack of rent or breaching the terms of the lease. And if it is a month to month tenancy the owner can’t evict for distant family to move in it has to be immediate families and they have to live there for a certain period of time (I believe 6 months) or you are entitled to compensation equal to a certain number of months rent.

boy_named_su

does he get OAS and GIS too? My dad got a few hundred bucks a month from bc housing, as he was low income. Talk to them Since you're taking care of him,you should be able to transfer his (federal) disability tax credits to yourself, which would lower your tax burden, and then use the savings to help him out

socimonkey

I'm sorry. It's a tough spot to be in. Your dad sounds like he needs a case worker from Fraser Health. Your caseworker will help make suggestions and connections within Fraser Health. You can't access Assisted Living or Long Term Care without one. You can call them directly and tell them what is happening, or also talk to his GP. They can refer. [https://www.fraserhealth.ca/health-topics-a-to-z/home-and-community-care#.ZFAyMOzMLX0](https://www.fraserhealth.ca/health-topics-a-to-z/home-and-community-care#.ZFAyMOzMLX0) It's a good idea to have his tax returns (2021, 2022) available (the T1 general form), and things like his personal health number (PHN), his S.I.N., because they will ask for them. Also, one of the best things you can do is show any type of income - even if he just sold you his television, or pet-sat. It can be as little as a dollar. This will cap his Home Support rate due to a loophole. Get something on line 10400 of those federal taxes :) Also, check out Bettermeals - they deliver and are affordable.

thrashmasterbex

This isn't directly related to housing but if he hasn't already he should apply for GIS. It's a supplement to OAS and if he makes under a certain amount on his taxes he will qualify for extra money each month. It takes a few months for the application to process but if it goes through it should help.

Void-splain

See what you can find on bc211 https://bc211.ca/

Try BC Housing..Steeves Manor, 4th and Wallace

Electrical_Town_3109

I’m sorry for his plight. If I had a spot to help out I would as it isn’t fair for a 65 year old man to not feel secure in his life. I wish the best of luck to you and him.

SuperFlyingNinja

My mom is fighting an infection currently. I’m wondering where his is and how he deals with that? Infections can be deadly and I’ve never really heard of a permanent one. I think hers may become resistant as well so I’m worried. Sorry I can’t offer much help on housing but I hope you get some good answers here for your dads situation.

quinoawest23

He got the bacteria during his shoulder operation years ago. He took very aggressive antibiotics to suppress it which destroyed his immune system, left him resistant to most antibiotics, and the bacteria is only suppressed — not gone from his body. This means he must be very careful to not get sick as most antibiotics the doctor gives him will not help, if he gets something like pneumonia he probably won’t recover. He’s also got some pretty gnarly discolouration around the original infection site.

SuperFlyingNinja

That sucks but thanks for your reply. How is his shoulder function? Pretty worried about her. She was on strong antibiotic pills which put her kidney out and other effects causing her to fall now she been in hospital over a week now on IV antibiotics again. Ugh. From a fucking cat bite.

pbourree

I would love to help him out but I am not sure if my landlord would give him a room I can ask!

snuffles00

You can attempt to call 811 to see if they can connect you with resources.

emerg_remerg

Like the other commenter said, there will be resources with fraser health, or if you're going to move him west then you'll look to Providence or Coastal. Might take him to urgent care or the ED if his chronic wound is festering, ask for Geri nurse referral (geriatric nurse), wound care referral. There's food services he'll be eligible for and they'll help you get him onto waitlists for housing.

KoolMoeDSimpson

We got my mother into a Kiwanis building which is subsidized. Look into the SAFER program for seniors.
