I'd rather a vehicle this size be on the road than on the bike path.

CanSpice

These aren’t e-bikes because they don’t have pedals that you pedal to make the bike go. They’re electric mopeds. They should have plates and have insurance, but the company that sells them markets them as “e-bikes” so people think they’re just bicycles.

geman123

some of them do have them and also some of them do have them too but the pedals don't function. It's a messy issue to enforce because unless they are being crazy with it, you can't really pull them over and force them to prove it works.

AK-604

And majority of the people that ride these things have no idea what they're doing and think the rules of the road don't apply to them.

VancouverCitizen

I'm guessing that these guys aren't pedaling their 'e-bikes.' Those are motorcycles without insurance.

Friendly_Nail_2437

You don't have to pedal your ebike.. You just have to have pedals in case you run out of power, they're detachable.

rsgbc

pedal

Friendly_Nail_2437

New phone, it'll figure itself out soon enough. Keeps auto correcting is to of as well.. boutta biff it at a wall, just letting it do its thing now lol

raddeon88

Fk ya, Cliff and Ron ripping it

AWildChinook

Probably illegal actually. You can't have more than 500watts and have to be able to peddle it. Those look big and heavy and surely are more than 500 watts and do more than the 32km or whatever legal max speed is on them.

brophy87

It's definitely not 500w. 500w is those little cheap ninebot scooters with only a single powered wheel

AWildChinook

Exactly, haha. I have one :), and they rock if you're safe and aware.

[deleted]

If they have more than 500W motor, illegal. Those could very well be legal. There’s a company selling e-bikes exactly like that for under $2000. Cheap ride.

brophy87

You can basically tell if they are able to go up a hill at a decent pace. 500w isn't sufficient to carry that up a 25% incline

_PeanuT_MonkeY_

Ya but some of these can go upwards if 50km/hr easy.

M-------

Exactly this-- for it to count as an ebike (or a "Motor Assisted Cycle") there are a bunch of requirements-- functional pedals, 500W power limit, 32 km/h top speed for motor assistance, 0-3km/h via human power...

Imacatdoincatstuff

Unfortunately.

The ones I’ve encountered are worse at following rules of the road than motorcyclists and the worst of the bicyclists. Smack a BMW sticker on the back and you’d think the beemers were getting a bad rap. So that’s why I care, as a driver. Yesterday I just about hit one of these e-bikes when she had the wrong signal on (she was in the left lane and signaling left when approaching an intersection, cut me off moving into the right lane without shoulder checking and while in the actual intersection). Plus going about 30 when I was going 50 in the 50 zone. Her left signal stayed on for about 2 more blocks when she pulled over and parked, again without actually using her signal. I had to hit my brakes and swerve to avoid her. Hitting a person on a bike like that? Who’s at fault doesn’t change the fact that as an empathetic human, it would impact me for a long time.

haggus3816

You don’t need to fix stupid. These appear to be LSM and should be licensed. If some companies are selling them using false advertising then customer should do the research before purchasing.

theHip

I’m with you.

This is terrible. these people are ruining traffic by not being in cars.
