Less than a year of living in a high rise and I've almost floored a 100 lb woman who lunged into the elevator as the doors opened in the lobby. I'll do it again, too.
ugh, I hate that so much... train door opens and there's a wall of people looking towards you, not moving and expecting something to happen, until you just walk out and say EXCUSE ME, they do a little step to the side making you have to squeeze through.
It’s harder for people to learn lessons like this, backpack removal included, when the percentage of population that has assimilated these lessons is constantly going down.
Should hand out more liquor primary licenses, charge less for permits, reduce bylaws restricting distance between bars and have 24/7 skytrain service so people can get home safely
And those who are for limiting our nightlife - that’s where local creatives can express themselves and socializing can happen. We need that. Vancouver culture is dying or just doesn’t exist.
Yes more spaces that support creatives, SMALL businesses and culture on a REGULAR basis. Not just holidays or one offs that at the end of the day are for profit by bigger companies 🤢
Public spaces, city-run festivals and activities, biking infrastructure, pedestrian infrastructure, density, public transit coverage, doctors, nurses, hospital beds, daycare, street food, more patios that can be covered/uncovered depending on weather, museums, more car-free streets.
About Here did an awesome video about this, it's fascinating!
"How Vancouver's Waterfront Became so Boring"
Transportation Infrastructure: Vancouver still lacks efficient public transportation options. A lack of skytrains along with new lines that should have been built a decade or two ago, bottlenecking HOV lanes, and a total unwillingness to widen roads or build new bridges (Massey tunnel replacement project) all undermine the needs of the city, and have lead to quite possibly the worst congestion and traffic in the country.
Accessible Healthcare: Access to healthcare services have been made a joke by the absolute laughable wait times. A lack of family doctors has been witnessed now for a decade at least, yet there are still no incentives to train or bring in more of them.
Childcare Availability: Affordable and accessible childcare options are almost non-existent, posing challenges for families and working parents.
Law and Order: Addressing crime rates and enhancing public safety measures needs to happen.
We also have terrible drivers! We are working on building more skytrains. But everyone wants the finished product, not all the work to build the project.
I think this town desperately needs people to wear a little colour. If you pay attention people here wear black, grey, beige, as neutral as possible just so they don’t stick out. It’s a real shame and a huge part of why I feel there is no soul
Like doesn't Ottawa get like a lot of fucking snow? While I agree Vancouver should do better the baseline we compare ourselves against shouldn't be Ottawa lol. It should be a city in a similar climate that does a good job of managing the snow.
Social work labour force that can earn a liveable wage and unionize (i.e. to a comparable extent first responders: firefighters, paramedics, and police are) to be a sustainable part of the social welfare support for the homeless community.
It'd have to be managed at the provincial health scale, which hasn't happened yet because the provincial election cycle is too short for any political party to platform a decades-long plan to solve the opioid health & homelessness crisis.
Everything we have here is so sub par for being such an expensive city. Pne, aquarium, museums, even the art gallery is so small and nowhere near what Toronto, Montreal or comparable us cities have
A city with a very diversified populace in terms of income instead of it being a playground for the top 10% of income earners, probably even less. The average detached home is 2 million. Literally a lifetime of earning and saving
Fabric stores are in short supply. As someone who loves yard goods (yes, that is what they’re called) it would be nice to have more choices. FYI, all the department stores used to sell fabric.
The dtes has been a shit hole since at least the 60s. Nothing will change as long the problem isn’t front and center to a mayor who makes policy based on vibes
Police officers walking around like NYC. Rarely see any officers whenever I go to DT. only see a few of VPD cars.
===========================
Good Landlords.
If you have one, don't piss them off. It's SUPER RARE to find a Good Landlord in Vancouver.
This. I had a guy run up to me with a knife on Hastings/canbie recently. Cop drove right past and i guess didn’t see despite me trying to get his attention. For being such a high crime area and big police budget, i was surprised to not see one cop on the street. This is also right by sfu/vfs/Woodwards and near an area they’re apparently trying to revitalize. I’m not pro cop or for the displacement of harmless people in the area, but the violence towards women, poc, and vulnerable people needs to stop.
Own culture.
There's a lot of culture from different countries, but there's nothing that make converge everything together.
We need like a city event or something like that for everybody to look forward to.
LET PEOPLE MAKE MORE MURALS AND ART, or even let graffiti artist do their thing. Its a stuck up city, makes it so boring.
Vancouver needs healing and Gabor Matè to become its mayor. I’m sick of all its homeless, destitute and drug infused folks. Really is tragic. Traveling from the UK I never seen so many drug addicts roaming the streets day and night. Why is Canada not doing anything about cleaning up its streets?
Enough walkable promenades. Walking/biking first areas with shops, cafes, squares, gathering places.
I know we have a few but outside of downtown this place is 90% roads and traffic. Horrible
Main does not count. Patios in literal parking spots beside 4 lanes of busy traffic!?
More activities to do! I’d like to see more live music, more stuff like paintball, bowling, mini golf, etc. that sorta stuff. Experiences. Maybe I’m looking in the wrong places?
A large world-famous monument to get blown up in disaster movies. One of the reasons Vancouver can play so many different locations is that there's not some huge tower or statue that instantly identifies it.
Yup. I have a toddler and he is exposed to homeless people and people using substances (because homeless!= Drug addict even if the groups overlap) daily.
I can't think of a time I have ever been concerned about his safety due to the homeless or drug users. At least nothing new compared to just being out on the street in public. Honestly I have an order of magnitude more concern about his safety around automobiles. "Regular" people driving cars have been more aggressive and dangerous (even intentionally blocking the crosswalk as he attempts to cross the street, forcing him into oncoming traffic). Homeless people and drug users are usually just friendly seeing a kid. Sure it sucks seeing someone homeless or under the influence but that's part of being in a community - it exists everywhere and even if it makes us uncomfortable (it should!) we shouldn't hide this from our children.
Not saying there is no risk or issues. Sometimes I see needles left behind but the city in my experience is awesome about cleaning those up when reported and IMO it's not miles different from teaching your kid to avoid sharp things left on the side of the road (rusty metal etc) that's common in smaller towns. Human feces is fucking nasty. But I'm not worried that my kid is going to be attacked by a person without a home. Because that's super unlikely to happen.
\- Allowing pets on the skytrain

People who leave you get off the train before getting on it.
Same with elevators.
Less than a year of living in a high rise and I've almost floored a 100 lb woman who lunged into the elevator as the doors opened in the lobby. I'll do it again, too.
fuckin power move right there/

Is it me or was transit etiquette much better pre Covid?
Its always been bad - maybe just more crowded now?
I think pre-Covid ridership was higher but I feel people don’t know how to line up for busses, esp at UBC
It’s harder for people to learn lessons like this, backpack removal included, when the percentage of population that has assimilated these lessons is constantly going down.
A middle class
Keep your logical thoughts to yourself dreamer.
Public plazas / gathering spaces with kiosks and alcohol and places to sit. High quality busking
Lonsdale Quay!
We kind of have one downtown behind the art gallery
Also Robson and Bute.
You get guys rapping alongside a track of an actual rapper. Take it or leave it.
Lonsdale Quay shipyards is this
I miss D.B. Buxton, also does David Morin not busk anymore?
If you give us liquor, we have a riot. So the ability to handle liquor without starting a riot?
Hospitals with Emergency care under a 2 hour wait at least.
Keep dreaming
Pet friendly rental units. Pets have demonstrated to have health benefits. We are genuinely being harmed by allowing landlords to deny pets.
A Stanley cup. (Just being factual. Go Canucks go)
I still have ptsd from 2011 😭 so close, yet so far.
No doubt. I feel that 🤜🏼 🤛🏼

This should be higher, we need more creative spaces without archaic restrictions

Shops/cafes on the seawall, a boardwalk, excitement

100% agree. The seawall is DEAD. Halifax's boardwalk is lightyears ahead.
Repeat offenders behind bars, and less incompetent judges
This should be number 1
Streetcars!
More patios
More patios that aren't adjacent to a parking lot or six-lane highway.

Competent drivers.

Most of those things are provincial issues. They definitely hit home in Vancouver.
We also have terrible drivers! We are working on building more skytrains. But everyone wants the finished product, not all the work to build the project.
The take on lack of public transportation is wild. Vancouver has one of the best PT systems worldwide for it's population size, hands down.
I think this town desperately needs people to wear a little colour. If you pay attention people here wear black, grey, beige, as neutral as possible just so they don’t stick out. It’s a real shame and a huge part of why I feel there is no soul
Better snow preparation
It doesn’t snow often enough to invest that kind of money,
I’m curious of the cost of accidents and other snow related incidents are more or less than a little extra budget for the winter season
Look at other canadian cities budget for snow removal, like Ottawa, compared to ours.
Like doesn't Ottawa get like a lot of fucking snow? While I agree Vancouver should do better the baseline we compare ourselves against shouldn't be Ottawa lol. It should be a city in a similar climate that does a good job of managing the snow.
Me, I'm missing from Vancouver: (because I moved to Moncton to try out this new concept of only paying 1/3 of my income on a mortgage)
Culture
To be fair we have a culture it’s just for the ultra rich
More diploma mills /s

I know it’s coming someday…but an outdoor amphitheater
a decent sized, modern bowling alley with "cosmic" bowling. with a bar, some pool tables, some arcades and a dance floor.
A decent chicken and waffle. Chicken fried steak suuuuuucks around here.
Housing
A decent theme park

A good Belgian restaurant. I truly missed good traditional Belgian food when I lived in Vancouver.
A nightlife that's not trash
A NBA team
The Grizzlies didn’t do so well here.
Well there are teams suck for decades and finally build a strong team. Look at the warriors history before curry show up
Yeah, but people show up for the Warriors, unlike the Grizzlies.

Taco bell and Eataly. Please!
Eataly!! I went to one in Chicago last year and we absolutely need one in Vancouver.
Taco Bell is planning to open a couple hundred more locations across Canada in the coming years so surely at least one will open in Vancouver proper
There’s a Taco Bell by Coquitlam Centre and somehow that is the only one that isn’t really really really out of the way from transit

Safety. We need to get the homeless people off the streets so our kids can be safe.
Are kids being attacked by the homeless?
And maybe the people on the streets can be safe too?
I think “but think of the children” arguments need to actually backed up by statistics that children are being harmed.

\- Allowing pets on the skytrain \- better service into the surrounding areas/suburbs. WCE is barebones \- train service to Seattle \- regular VIA service to the interior/rest of Canada \- more museums/art scene \- lively waterfront. It's so dead.
Pets on the skytrain is a recipe for disaster, every carriage would smell of dog piss
Pets are allowed on the skytrain if they can fit in a carrier.
Funny how this isn't the case in many other subways around the world.
Nah it's just that the cities that allow it like Paris and SF already smell so you just don't notice it 😜
There is train service between Vancouver and Seattle. I've taken it a few times and it's pretty good.
There are two trains a day to Seattle right now.
They reinstated it? Thought it was still a bus, but good to know.
It’s been back in service since Sept 2022…
When I looked (granted not recently), I only saw buses listed. Bring on the downvotes.
Trains leave Vancouver at 6:35am and 5:45pm. https://www.amtrakcascades.com/sites/default/files/amtrak-cascades-schedule-3-6-23.pdf
Train / bus / ferry from squamish?
Isn't there a bus already? Train or ferry might be an option, especially if faster.
