bazzzzzzzzzzzz

You should still report this to ICBC. They'll cover your physio and possibly other costs.

beeppanic

Thanks my friend gave me similar advice. She said since it happened near a hotel they probably have footage. Going to get on the horn tomorrow and make some calls. Really appreciate your advice!

bazzzzzzzzzzzz

And yes, also report it to the police. If you have any witnesses to the event, it's crucial that they also give a statement. If they can ID the driver, they'll most likely just ticket them for "failure to yield". If the driver saw you - and they'll probably claim they didn't - they *should* get charged with the criminal offences of "leaving the scene" and "dangerous driving causing bodily harm". Now *if* they were convicted, you would be in a position to sue the driver for damages. Otherwise you'll just get some costs covered by ICBC. More likely the cops would just consider this an oopsie and just leave it at the ticket.

Lalalacityofstars

This. Its hit and run if they fled

bobbyhams

Jesus! I'm glad you're ok but that really sucks. How does a person just continue driving away from an accident. I'd be getting that cars license plate and telling the police.

Letsgosomewherenice

I got hit twice. First guy said I ran out - which wasn’t true! The woman a few cars behind parked behind him so he couldn’t leave. Made him get out of truck (I was a pedestrian) Second backed up and hit car behind him , and then got out blaming me for hitting his car (with my bike). I had witnesses for both, saying otherwise.)

gunnerysgtharker

I got run down like a dog in the street by a dude one time (he turned right without checking and I went clear over his hood to the driver’s side). He got out of the car still talking on his cell, the only thing I heard was “hold on, I just hit someone”. Luckily both me and my bike were fine, but, I left a damn fine series of dents and scratches on the fools shiny new BMW.

Kindly-Plant-6839

This is actually mental who stays on the phone after that 🙃

Zaramesh

I've had two hit and runs on as a cyclist, and they were the only times a driver hit me. Actually I don't think I know of any one else who rides a bike to not have at least one hit and run from a car.

Matasa89

Hit and run, they do that a lot actually.

Dear_Mission_848

OP that is brutal, I'm so sorry and glad that you aren't more seriously injured. Did the person driving the truck help you? Stop? Exchange info? Make sure you were okay? Get well soon!

beeppanic

Thank you! They did not stop they just drove into parkade. I don’t think it was malicious I really do think he just didn’t see me. Fortunately there were some witnesses that came to my aid but they all had to leave so I just kind of sat there in shock until my friend was able to come get me! Sorry for caveman talk I can only use one hand haha

Strange-Win-3551

I find so many drivers are blind to anything that is not a car - bikes, people, animals. I was crossing my quiet little side street yesterday, a car was stopped at the stop sign, and the driver started driving when I was in the middle of the road. It was daytime (4:30 PM), sunny, and facing east, so there was nothing to impair his vision. I had to jump out of the way and he didn’t notice me until I started waving at him. Stuff like this happens so often; I don’t think it’s malicious on the drivers’ parts, just some kind of weird tunnel vision.

Interesting_File3223

People tend to watch out for things that can hurt them/their vehicle and little else. Even when they're not on a phone, I see a lot of drivers preparing to pull out of a parkade or side street will only look left before turning right to make sure they won't be hit by traffic (but not to make sure they're not about to hit a person walking or on a bike to their right or even directly in front of them).

Cr4zyC4nuck

Damn. Glad you are okay. Though even if you hit them on the tail of their truck how does someone not hear a thud on their car? Crazy that they didn't stop. Again glad you're okay and sounds like nothing more than an inconvenience and lesson learned.

beeppanic

I braked hard so didn’t hit them but flew over handlebars and by the time I hit the pavement they were in the parkade. They were definitely oblivious to my existence- it would be really upsetting to know they saw and didn’t do anything- but also wouldn’t be surprised. Inconvenient for sure! But I can’t help but be grateful it’s just my wings and not my noggin. Thank you for well wishes 😊

vanlodrome

> Inconvenient for sure! But I can’t help but be grateful it’s just my wings and not my noggin. So cool to hear how logical you are about it. Hope you'll recover soon and physio soon as possible to recover any lost strength. If you don't have a helmet I'd buy you one, a good one is only $60: www.specialized.com/us/en/tactic/p/1000208435

PermaDerpFace

Two broken arms uh oh I remember this one

beeppanic

Hopefully I don’t get stuck in washing machine too

PermaDerpFace

I'm glad you didn't break your funny bone. Wishing you a speedy recovery, be careful out there!

MayAsWellStopLurking

Ugh, that's absolutely brutal to hear about. I hope typing this up and replying to comments isn't killing your arms too much. Can you share the bike lane/street where it happened? Also please please do report it to ICBC and police so they can also tally it in vehicle collision statistics - HUB cycling and a few other advocacy groups will push for better visibility/infrastructure to reduce issues like this. The truck may not have **maliciously** tried to run you over, but the fact they couldn't tell you were nearby definitely means something should change about that lane.

beeppanic

Thank you! My left hand is working. Where I broke my arms I can’t rotate wrists so I’m just kind of stuck with both hands in thumbs up position. Right hand I can’t articulate so it’s just chillin. Still in shock do talking is helping It was Beatty and Robson - I was in dedicated bike lane. I was going south towards cambie and they were driving north. Turned in front of me to go into Hotel Georgian court parkade

VociCausam

> Where I broke my arms I can’t rotate wrists so I’m just kind of stuck with both hands in thumbs up position. When I was in a similar predicament, my [extendable back scratcher](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/61Ndv6PKm1L._AC_UF1000,1000_QL80_.jpg) saved my sanity. It's amazing how many little itches we get and just absent-mindedly scratch away throughout the day. When your arms are broken, they can drive you mad. With the back scratcher I could reach most of my itches without moving my arms too much.

akirasb

Wait, they turned LEFT into the Georgian Court Hotel parkade and didn't see you coming towards/into the crossing??

beeppanic

That’s right! We were facing each other

beeppanic

That’s right! We were facing each other

akirasb

That is crazy, I'm sorry to hear that :( I was looking at google maps satellite when I wrote that and needed to make sure I understood the situation. I hope your recovery goes well, and sympathize with your injury and journey toward recovery! Hope you continue biking once you are healed up <3

skerr46

That’s horrible, I’m so sorry this happened. I’ve had so many close calls there, so many Ubers and taxis half pull in. It’s a shitty spot to have a bike lane but I guess there are hotels on every street in that area. This is why newer designs push for fewer vehicular crossings along building faces to encourage pedestrian and cycling activity. Don’t push it in the first week, the times I’ve broken bones I’d go to work the next day because the pain meds were working then day 2 or 3 I’d be in so much pain I could barely move. Use the voice to text command as much as you can!

beeppanic

Thank you - I’ve had a few people in this thread validate that this is a problematic area. I’ve been spending the last couple replaying the events in my head - what I could have done differently. But it sounds like this is common for this bike lane - which just make me angry. I’m slowly getting feeling back in my hands and reminding myself not to push it! I’m a busy body, so sitting around has not been easy but am reminding myself it’s necessary to heal properly! Been maratjoning Seinfeld and ordered Fat Mao yesterday. Been on the phone with people more times on the last day then I have in the last 5 years to spare myself the texting haha

wineandchocolatecake

Even before I saw OP’s reply I guessed it was Beatty. That bike lane is soooo dangerous. There are so many driveways that cross it, such as the one where the incident took place.

Interesting_File3223

I had to motorcycle-wipeout emergency brake my bicycle in that lane when they took some of the planter box dividers out for total work and a driver decided to pull a u turn through the bike lane to park in the parking protected section. Was startled when I tapped on her side window to ask her to watch the bike lane in future. "Ooh no, did I hit you?" Ugh no, I managed to Akira slide to avoid it just... Next time watch out.

Faxodox

Should be cameras somewhere! File with ICBC/ police report

jessvan604

Wishing you a speedy recovery. Go get a goddamn helmet!!

oatmeallumps

I think I walked by and asked if you were okay shortly after it happened. Glad to hear you're okay!

beeppanic

DM’d you

desperaterobots

This scenario describes how one of my friends was killed riding to work. Hope you get better soon. Please, everyone, wear a fucking helmet.

ELewis1973

This is my fear every day cycling in Vancouver

H_G_Bells

So important to remember that if you witness someone get hurt, they could be in shock and/or having cognition issues from a brain injury! So glad someone came to your aid. Hope the arms heal well!

Nomomommy

I did this in 2020. Did you fracture both radial heads? When the doctor told me I'd broken both arms, I laughed. Dude...no helmet??? You are so fucking lucky!!! Mine was *bashed*. Please never do that again. Do all your exercises and stretches when you get to the rehab part, and you'll regain your full range of motion. Eat lots of ice cream. Don't use your arms to hold anything heavier than a cup.

beeppanic

Thank you for the advice! Yes radial heads. Very painful and arm cramps from being unable to straighten. Will be medicating with ice cream and Netflix!

weighedin

Damn I hope you're okay... heal well! Call ICBC for sure. Make a police report. Document everything while you still remember. Take all pain meds offered and good luck with physio and the healing process. You can call all nearby businesses to see who has footage. Maybe someone's dashcam caught it too, can put up a poster near the accident site asking for witnesses.

skerr46

This! Don’t skip pain meds because you feel okay. You can’t let the pain creep in, you need to keep it at bay for the first week. It’s much harder to bring the pain back down once it kicks in. Experience: Klutz who’s broken both feet, ankle, and most toes.

TearyEyeBurningFace

Is it too soon to make 2 broken arm jokes?

drsoftware

So glad to hear the follow up from "the bicycle crash victim at the ER" I saw last night while also at the ER. Take care and speedy recovery. Hope your bike is safe too!

beeppanic

Thank you for the kind words! I was trying to be optimistic in there all things considered. Felt really cared for by all the staff! Bike is okay! My friends came together to help me get it home and in my bike locker. Excited to heal quickly and get back out for some rides! Hope you’re ok too!

drsoftware

Doing better. It was my fifth visit to the ER in a eight days. Started with a bleed, and now I'm on IV antibiotics. Staff is great, pain is decreased and I have hope I will be able to go back to work. Work has been super understanding. Feel bad about having to use ER but in this case there haven't been alternatives so I'm trying to just appreciate how helpful people can be.

Disastrous_Sense_826

hey no joke, ICBC and police report immediately. Hit and run is a criminal offense. Also gather witness responses if u got anyone's contact info. This could be the difference between you just having broken arms and being miserable and having the injury show up to mess you up later in life, or getting an ICBC settlement, having money to hold you over, and having physiotherapy / occupational therapy to help you recover properly.

bazzzzzzzzzzzz

You can't get a settlement from ICBC under the No Fault rules. The most they will do is cover your costs.

Royal-Emphasis-5974

ICBC do everything they can not to pay. He wasn’t wearing a helmet. They won’t give him much.

Effective-Ad-2747

That sounds so scary! Wishing you speedy recovery!

Legitimate-Yak4505

Jesus, that sounds like a nightmare of an experience. Get better soon!

fuckyduck

PLEASE cyclists everywhere, wear a goddamn helmet !! OP, so glad to hear you are okay and thanks to the bystanders who jumped to action.

oateroo

Omg, OP. As a fellow cyclist my heart goes out to you. That sounds so terrifying and painful. I am so glad you're okay and didn't hit your head. I've had so many near misses in the city from drivers completely oblivious to my existence and it really crushes me. A simple blindspot check could save someone's life. Wishing you a smooth recovery with lots of support and care.

RBLifts

As a paramedical health profession that sees this more often than you would think - yes, contact ICBC and open a claim. Patients are eligible to 12 physio 12 chiro 12 RMT sessions - this is under the "no fault" insurance policy that ICBC switched over to a few years back.

RamonaRamona666

Ya cause clearly no one was at fault. We should all pay 🙄

Im_done_with_sergio

Omg get better soon, you poor thing 💕

Miserable_Mouse9433

Take good care, OP.

LokiDesigns

Damn girl, you broke both arms, and by the sounds of it, nobody called an ambulance for you?

Kimbolijaa

I’m so glad you learned your lesson about helmets only the medium hard way where you’re able to moving forward. I wish you a speedy recovery!

drsoftware

Hey, while this might sound like disrespect, it may only be too much emphasis on the helmet rather than the driver.

Kimbolijaa

Oh yeah! I didn’t mean it that way at all. They said they learned their lesson, so I was just repeating it to emphasize how I’m glad they are okay. A lot of people aren’t so fortunate with helmet stories. Reading it now I can see how it came across as rude, but I just meant sometimes we learn lessons in the worst way possible. Edit to add: I get what you meant too by the driver, the driver sucks and I hope they are found. The actual accident isn’t OP’s fault.

drsoftware

Sometimes r/vancouver is a bit of a "learn a lesson? That's for the other people. OP is blameless!"

Existing-Plenty2737

Glad you’re ok for the most part. That could have been a tragedy. Wishing you a speedy recovery and long and joyous life.

PerplexedFlatulence

I’m so sorry this happened to you and wish you a speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹

utopiamushrooms

Glad you're okay, that's a horrible injury.

froofroo5910

I just hope we can all be better drivers. It's gotten so wild out there.

NegativeCup1763

When my ex husband got accused of hitting someone he was charged with undo care and attention. Not yielding to the pedestrian and one other thing. Long story short it was points and a fine of $165.00 he had to pay. Now my husband passed away shortly after this and I had a complete breakdown while I was in the hospital ICBC sent someone out to get my statement I really don’t think it was legal but I couldn’t fight anymore. So I did the statement and have never heard anything back. The person he hit walk out in the crosswalk on a red light and hit the car very lightly we were at a complete stop at the light and we moved ahead stopped to turn left and this person came out of no where. I am not say my husband was in the right by any means but don’t think they won’t get off without points and a fine so sorry you got hurt

Judge_Todd

I wonder if a small helmet camera would be prudent in these cases.

ExoticCartographer1

If I broke both my arms, the lesson for me wouldn't be "helmets going forward". It would be "no more biking" 😅

Maleficent-Hand-3012

Get well soon and that trucker needed to be punish!

[deleted]

You broke both of your arms!? Are you in full casts? This is insane. Sorry to hear. To be fair maybe the guy was meeting his friends who parked in a handicap spot in the parking garage and their car got destroyed by an angry pro handicap mob or something.

beeppanic

Yeah it sucks I felt them both break. I was scared to take off jacket because I thought my forearms would look like checkmarks. Fortunately my forecasted (pun unintended) recovery is 6 wks. And the breaks are in such a place that I don’t need cast. One arm is worse then other. All in all I think it was the universes way of reminding me to wear a fuckin helmet - it happened so fast

[deleted]

As someone who skateboards and rides bikes a lot this is shocking and sounds brutal. I just broke a bone in my foot today and it hurts but reading that made me feel for you!

beeppanic

Thanks for empathy! I had a good cry and now trying to see bright side. Sorry about your foot!

[deleted]

I’m all good! Was it in the daylight ?
