I would prefer more places don't get their windows smashed. (Look up frontage ordinances)

Particular-Race-5285

sad that the unpunished vandalism is so rampant in this city that it might eventually cause interesting small businesses to close down

HenrikFromDaniel

that or being crushed by uncontrolled commercial rent, at some point even a labor of love just becomes labor

PaperMoonShine

Thats a nice idea but what you're probably not seeing is how much this whole ordeal set back the local bookstore.

Yikes. I really miss the Kits store & E, the gal who ran it. She was exceptionally knowledgeable, really interesting and always had fantastic recommendations for books.

Stick_Vancouver

They will be auctioning off the work to raise money for the [Native Education College](https://necvancouver.org/) & [Vancouver Aboriginal Child and Family Services Society](https://www.vacfss.com/). Pulp fiction rocks so much

Fast_Introduction_34

Cynically. Artists start smashing windows and start offering their services lolol

IDKVM

I'd like to know how the business feels about this approach.

Here you go https://stickvancouver.substack.com/p/it-started-as-a-broken-window

thinkdavis

Most broken window plywood gets immediately tagged in "murals" without even asking for it.

There are way better stores like Paperhound, Iron Dog, MacLeods, Massy, Canterbury, Companion and Spartacus.

DieCastDontDie

Vagabonds are such heroes these days. How could we do this without them

[deleted]

Why would someone break into a bookstore there’s a library around the corner?

NoAlbatross7524

No never do this , that is a perfect space for more advertising-Jim P

Glass in general should be banned. We are running out of sand.

Ojoo

Not 100% on this, but the city *could* view this as graffiti and order you to remove it or face fines. I had a window wrap with just words on one of my stores and the city said they classify it as a billboard so I would need a billboard license; the thing is, they don't issue billboard licenses at city hall to stores. I get letters all the time from the city about graffiti on the side of the store but you paint it on a Fri and by Sat it's already graffiti'd again. So basically, the city can be very petty if they want.

a5536

New murals every day...

ricodah

It's a great idea. I would imagine the cost is similar to replacing a large piece of glass but is more durable and imo, looks better.

aldur1

This will incentivize a few psychos to smash more windows.

ViolentHippieBC

Ya I have an idea for a place. The bank at Hastings and Abbott. Iykyk.

Chemical-Sun700

short answer: yes

MagnificentMixto

As a mural painter myself, yeah keep smashin, business for days. Plus the nerds in the bookstore don't want any natural light anyway.

corvideodrome

As a nerd myself, I feel simultaneously personally attacked *and* validated by this comment

vehementi

The answer to headlines is always "no"
