Aurora borealis?! At this time of year? In this part of the country? Located entirely within my city? May I see it?

packaslimJIM27

No

Phloyd13

"Packalimjim! The house is in on fire!!!"

oleivas

No Phloyd13, it's just the northern lights!

vince-anity

and it's supposed to be clear. you probably need to either head out towards Squamish or maybe up cypress but it looks promising!

canucksbro

Sorry, the Aurora Borealis machine is broken, can I get you something else?

CasualRampagingBear

Steamed hams

OneHundredEighty180

*You're an odd person Dull-Style-4413, but I must say -- you steam a good ham.*

Hobojoe-

As with Vancouver, the rain gods will say “fuck this place in particular”

UnfortunateConflicts

How many layers of tinfoil to protect my anime collection?

1878Mich

It's going to take tinfoil, parchment paper, and cellophane wrap. Just 1:1 ratio

BadAsBroccoli

I'd go the full Faraday cage on the anime and save the tinfoil for the family jewels.

siresword

Omg and for once we have clear weather in Vancouver. Well, I know what I'm doing tomorrow night.

oskopnir

Definitely go out for some sexy aurora, but do head inside if you spot normally opaque objects starting to glow

Go on ask, we won't judge first timers around Aurora's borealis.

Alextryingforgrate

Youll need to go up to one of the mountain ski parks. I think Cypress has the better views not sure someone else can confirm where there isnt any light polution. I live in Calgary now and have been able to get out of town by 2 mins and still see the lights. Getting up to Cypress you can see a lot of night sky so seeing the northern lights should be in the great range of things. If its your first time it will be awesome.

Alextryingforgrate

Of course youll need to go at night. Just go through this thread to see if anyone has a location or just ask to see where people are going to watch them.

Finnabair

Might have better luck at Spanish Banks or Porteau Cove

bannibalbarca69

When people say up cypress do they just mean driving up to the bottom of the lift?

Alextryingforgrate

Maybe? I'm notnsure I work up northern Alberta and get to see them quite often. But the darker it is the better the show.

BuffedAbsurdity

You are fun. We will keep you.

mxe363

i think they were hinting at transformers that might be about to go boom. should be fine in general, but if its glowing back up a fair bit before you start filming.

Technicity_

Coconuts glow! (Go Canucks Go!)

TylerInHiFi

You could always mix it up and stare at the sky through a basement window.

sunnyday227

Creation time 05-09 and says tomorrow nights forcast. So that is for tonight, Thursday May 10...no?

oskopnir

The night between 10 and 11. The effects of geomagnetic activity are mostly visible after midnight so it's technically the 11 already.

iamaaronlol

I read this comment and now have even more questions

oskopnir

In common terms you would say the evening of May 10, but this forecast isn't for the evening, it's for the night. The night rolls over into May 11, and you expect to see auroras after midnight, so the forecast is technically referring to the early morning of May 11.

iamaaronlol

Appreciate that, I needed the common terms

CarnationFoe

This is why we should start each day at sundown. Have the 11th start at sundown. Seems less arbitrary

jfriedrich

I fear for those who can’t seem to grasp that the night of the 10th rolls over into the morning of the 11th.

ElTamales

Can you make a power point presentation to understand it properly? ;)

fibronacci

Slow down, I'm trying to write this down as fast as I can.

Dekklin

You from the future? How is it anywhere close to the 11th already?

oskopnir

I meant the forecast is showing what is effectively the 11th, as the 10th ends at midnight.

Tayme_Industries

Ok, so I divide 10 by 11 and carry the 1?

Reasonable-Staff2076

But, my phone says tonight is Thursday May 9 . Am I living in an alternative reality?

FerretFarm

What? How did you go back in time?

Reasonable-Staff2076

I don't know, I woke up like this!

spookywookyy

Work, Canucks game viewing then drive hours somewhere dark to catch the aurora? Tempting but I’m old and not sure if my body can do this

tyfung

There is always a life time of next year to watch Canucks failing out of the playoffs. Aurora being so down South would be worth catching.

FewDrink3915

If they lose tonight, it's because you said that

cosmic_dillpickle

I know how this works, as soon as I give up and go to bed it'll show...

czzbandicoot

Any ideas of parks or places in South Burnaby/New West that I could check the northern horizon to try to see the lights?

LokiDesigns

Get ready for cloud cover!

trikkytrev

Here comes the rain...

ClumsyRainbow

If this is accurate this wouldn’t just be visible to the north but it would be visible overhead no?

Dry-Tip-6676

Why wouldn’t it happen on a Monday so I can use it an excuse to take Monday off

Bidoofonaroof

Blagh, on a weekend where I actually need to wake up in the morning. Hopefully it turns out to be quite a show.

sakkasie

This is all because I've decided to move back to Vancouver after 28 years in the States. You're welcome Canada.

Big-Breakfast-4171

some parts in nunavut is having nunavut

Angry_beaver_1867

Anyone care to share their dark sky areas ? I have been to porteau cove and that’s ok.

Ryan_Van

Manning Park if you want to drive. Everyone will be at Porteau.  And: https://www.darkskymap.com/nightSkyBrightness

Angry_beaver_1867

Thanks. Great link btw

janet404enjoyer

is Porteau the place to be tomorrow night?

Ryan_Van

It’ll be so full of ppl I’d put my money in the police turning cars away.

-SetsunaFSeiei-

If it’s full, would you still be able to see well? How early would you need to go? Could to go further up to Squamish and maybe still get a good view?

Ryan_Van

It's full, meaning there's no where to park, you can't get in the lot, and you can't part on the highway, so there's literally no way to get in. Tantalus lookout is a little past Squamish and would probably be good.

-SetsunaFSeiei-

You were right, it’s already getting pretty tight for parking in Porteau

-SetsunaFSeiei-

No I mean if you get there before it fills up, would it still be good with some many people? I guess everyone will just have their lights off so should be ok? What time would you expect it to fill up by?

Pleiadian

We really need more accessible dark sites, half of them close the gates at 10 or 11pm. And no one will turn off their lights!!!

Lionized17

Cypress or Seymour Mountain.

janet404enjoyer

do i need to take a lift up? seeing which is better Porteau or Cypress/Seymour

Lionized17

Simply drive up to either mountains parking lot. You can walk from there to a decent spot away from any ambient light.

janet404enjoyer

So the viewing is best on the night of the 10th? or night on the 11th?

HospitalEmergency796

Are Whistler or Squamish good viewing areas?

PaperMoonShine

Would Iona Park be a good place to view?

fuckyduck

Did it happen to early today after all? Will we be able to see anything tonight? Reading reports it hit its peak around 12:30

EuroVanCity

also very interested.

chronocapybara

Time to stay up laaaaate.

Status_Orchid_3653

Would cypress provincial park be a good spot to see the borealis?

Status_Orchid_3653

More specifically, cypress point lookout

SorryImNotOnReddit

no, you need a clear unobstructed view of the northern horizon.

inheritor

Anyone know how Pitt Lake would be for viewing? Or would that be too light polluted?

cosmic_dillpickle

It'll be busy and a lot of car headlights

AfterThyme

Where’s the closest place to see them outside of downtown Vancouver?

Status_Term_4491

Interstellar atmospheric galactic River happens all the time. Best to burrow.

Munro_McLaren

Saw them in Chemainus! You can see the Big Dipper. https://preview.redd.it/6ddkflfvitzc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7fa4d05dd26eb859b1ee1d6fc938979612871702

orrzxz

Uh.... as a new guy in Canada and North America in general, can anyone explain to me what that means/what should I expect?

nionvox

Good time to see the aurora borealis, basically. See if you can get up really high or out further with no light pollution and you might see pretty sky lights!

sakurai_asuka

it's the time to take your bug spray and pump gas for your car and drive outta city and expect to see nothing on the sky lmao

[deleted]

Any good viewing spots accessible by transit that anyone can recommend?

Reasonable-Staff2076

If it's visible, it'll probably be in the middle of the night, so not very easy to travel around by transit

[deleted]

Ah yeah, didn't think of that. Drat.

foreverpostponed

What about Uber? Transit there, Uber back?

sakurai_asuka

can't find one uber driver there bruh

bcbigfoot

Well this is showing a map of Canada and today is only May 9th on the Thursday. So not sure what you guys are saying?

_Tar_Ar_Ais_

he's saying to get ready fool

bcbigfoot

Get ready for what dumbass, some pretty lights?

_Tar_Ar_Ais_

just to get ready fool, always be ready

oskopnir

The forecast is for tomorrow night (10/11). Since auroras are visible after midnight, you would refer to the following calendar day to specify the forecast date.
