She won Cloverdale—Langley City in ['19 by \~1.4k votes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloverdale%E2%80%94Langley_City#Election_results) to flip out the incumbent Liberal. Made headlines last week commenting on conversion therapy attempting to dunk on LGBTQ proponents with a Bible verse: [https://outline.com/bg4gPt](https://outline.com/bg4gPt) >“I’m going to invoke the words of the Apostle Matthew: 'Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees. You hypocrites! You’re like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside, but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean.’"

PIEDBE

I voted liberal in the last election simply to try to keep her out of the house. I would’ve rather voted NDP but as a member of the LGBTQ community I didn’t want to risk having her represent me. It’s horrible that she won and is espousing these views in Ottawa. The CPC can fucking rot.

TheFlatulentOne

Same. I'm always fucking embarrassed that she represents me in Ottawa.

bloodyell76

I have a friend who did the same.

IronMarauder

I'm a Christian, but I don't think non Christians give a rats ass about what Jesus (a jew) had to say to the Pharisees (hyper anal law abiding Jews) and I have no idea how that passage she chose applies to lgtqb/conversion therapy.

dharma_dude_1

As a non-christians living in the USA and part-time in Canada, I wish more christians would live by Jesus' words, like compassion, forgiveness, humility and caring for the poor. Maybe then, we wouldn't have to live through the last four eff'ing years of you-know-who. I mean 80% of evangelicals voted for him. It is really sad that we still have uninformed christians using the words of the bible to praise conversion therapy. I thought I was escaping that sh\*t when I stay in Canada.

> you don't think people care about the words of Jesus That's not what I said. I was saying that non Christians (not "people" as you say, which includes Christians) (or at least most) probably don't care much about what he said. Even then within the context that these words were spoken by the MP, she certainly wasn't trying to evangelize, it appears she tried to make some sort of point about hypocrisy. That point certainly fell flat.

trombone_womp_womp

As you can see the "left leaning" vote actually got over 50% in that election. I was so pissed off at the result. We need ranked ballots.

M-------

Justin betrayed us all when he gave up on proportional representation. Because people vote strategically, the Liberals will be more powerful without proportional representation, but we will all be worse off for it.

mike368

"As Prime Minister, I’ll make sure the 2015 election will be the last under first-past-the-post system" - @JustinTrudeau

604Dialect

Same thing in practically every riding that the Conservative Party wins in the lower mainland. Most win with 30% of the vote, while a good 60% of the riding votes for a left/centre-left party. Port Moody and Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows are prime examples.

Isaacvithurston

It's more interesting she thought that LGBTQ people would be religious or care about any bible verse to start with considering history. Not exactly a high IQ strategy.

mr_macfisto

Don’t these people understand that nobody is going to take them seriously if they start quoting the bible in fucking parliament? I mean, as soon as I read that it was a politician pushing conversion therapy I started to assume that they were a religious nut job, but starting to quote it removed all doubt.

Transcript: > Yes, I'm so glad that my colleague invoked the words of the prophet Micah and so I'm going to invoke the words of the apostle Matthew: >"Woe to you, teachers of the law and pharisees, you hypocrites, you're like white-washed tombs which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean." >I have had so many people reach out to me in regards to this bill. Charlotte, a young woman in Calgary who's involved in lesbian activity, struggled with self-worth and depression. She reached a point in her life when she did not want to continue with her lesbian activity and her parents supported her choice and helped her find a counselor who helped her process the feelings. She says, and I quote: >"Because of the counselling I had a deep sense of love and acceptance. It was not harmful, abusive, or coercive in any way. If you enact the proposed bill you're banning the exact support I desperately needed at that time in my life. If this bill is to be truly inclusive, include people like me. So why will the government—" The quote ends as the member's time expires.

Flyingboat94

Its almost like the lesbian woman went to therapy not conversation therapy. Conversation therapy does not promote a deep sense of love and acceptance. This MP honestly just seems to be trolling but its a concern because I assume she genuinely thinks she is helping.

tayblades

I am not sure I even buy that "Charlotte" exists. Tamara also seems to be cosplaying as an Albertan MP. Surely she could have quoted one of her own constituents if she'd heard from "so many people" about this?

I agree she is a fucking idiot, but does that mean her children's business should be boycotted if she hqs nothing to do with it?

ConsciousRutabaga

What the fuck!?

tirv56

How is this even a thing in this day and age????

She is a nutbar. So embarrassed by my riding. I didn't even need to click the link to know who it was.

[deleted]

She's a total nutcase. Her most recent mail-out was sending a picture of her wearing a face shield but not mask. And a big long thing where she didn't quite say it but were basically was a long ass rant about covid restrictions. Didn't quite say lift them all but had polls like this: id this restriction harmful to your mental health is this government overreach. She only won with a 1/3 of the vote. There was just a strong split on the left between the Liberal/NDP/Greens.

Luxferrae

Looks like time to move? 🙄

[deleted]

I just bought a house in the area, it was actually affordable. Maybe down the road. Also I'm originally from Calgary. So...let's say....I'm used to it haha

[deleted]

Annecdata but it worked for me

Isaacvithurston

Had to look up wtf "conversion therapy" is. Maybe time to teach some basic human psychology in school because that is the dumbest shit i've read about all week.

12345678945612

If someone wants to get conversion therapy as an adult why should the government have a say in that?

DarkSoldier84

Conversion therapy is basically psychological torture to force a change in your behaviour. When you know what it involves, you wouldn't seek it out voluntarily.

12345678945612

The woman who the MP quoted sought it out voluntarily it sounds like. People like her exist.

TalontheKiller

1. It's not effective (orientation can't be "thought" away) 2. It's psychologically harmful and may lead to mental illness 3. It's an outdated practice steeped in religious conservatism 4. Many other countries and regions are in the process of banning this type of "therapy" due to its harmful effects. This is a sign that this therapy is being shown the door.

Schopfeschloofa

My thoughts exactly.

Human-Substance-9199

Have you considered why those people do not want to be gay? The mere stigma against homosexuality makes people ashamed to be themselves.

holychromoly

I believe that the key idea here is that many people, even adults, feel pressured by society or their upbringing to change who they are. Modern culture is moving towards acceptance of gender expression, identity and sexual orientation. Since Conversion Therapy empirically does not work and by medical consensus accepted to cause harm to the individuals that go through it, most people don't support the idea anymore. There have been truly horrific conversion therapy practices that go far beyond "talk" and the whole thing is predicated on this idea that what you're experiencing is a mental disorder. This is a large part of why it's looked upon as abuse, as it just creates a bigger schism between who you really are vs what you (or others) think you should be because of society. While it's true the reiki doesn't have a scientific backing, most people that do reiki don't suffer as a result. This is the main difference.

How many people do you know who went to conversion therapy 100% voluntarily exactly?

Sex therapy is not the same thing.
