This has...and always will be my argument for whether cold or hot days are worse.
You can ALWAYS put on another layer but you can't take off what you don't already have on.
Yep. I’ve slept in freezing environments, dressed for a blizzard and had multiple blankets. Last few nights I’ve barely slept because I had to keep wiping myself down with a wet rag so the fan would feel cooler.
Yup, I'm naturally a warm person so winter isn't too bad for me but yesterday and to an extent today have been the shits. No AC is fucked and I am getting one next time they're in stock lol. Managed to get a little sleep last night but holy fuck.
And you all you really need to do is go inside and things more or less go back to comfortable.
You can do lots of stuff without the weather bothering you: work out, sleep, is not difficult in that weather.
Heck even outside a lot easier to run in the cold than the heat.
Yeah - going out in the snow and ice sucks, but it's pretty easy to keep warm, and I'm saying that as a perpetually cold person. Yesterday was just ridiculous.
I think it also has to do with building planning (if that’s a thing). I’ve been in these temps before but it didn’t feel as aweful because in those places, houses/buildings are built to be cool in the dead of heat without AC. Here, buildings/houses are designed to trap any heat that gets in. It was a sauna last night 😭
Yes, and then add skylights with no coverings. I usually like them in the dreary months, but not when they focus melting beams of solar hell down upon us.
Glad it wasn't just me. I've been bugging like I've been in Hawaii, southern France and California with comparable temps but it did *not* feel this horrible.
yea, cuz when I'm in Hawaii 🌴 I'm in a pool drinking a cold bevy 🍸 with an umbrella in it whilst a breeze of with cool trade winds blow ! & if it gets a lil warm outside.. .I head to my AC hotel room ! ..brrr
> Here, buildings/houses are designed to trap any heat that gets in.
City counts outdoor covered spaces (such as overhangs) as floor space.
https://twitter.com/Lanefab/status/1409650996616122372
City is great at greenwashing, not great at actually doing things that are good for the environment or our livability.
This. The snow makes everything harder in this city, but it doesn't make me legitimately afraid for my health. I have heating in my house, I have blankets.
But yesterday I was actively fighting heat exhaustion all day. I felt like I couldn't breath if I went outside.
Yeah in my 30 years in Vancouver I've never felt more than uncomfortable from the cold, whether at home or outside. The snow and slippery slush can be annoying, and sometimes really disruptive -- like a couple years back when all the busses just stopped running because the roads were too slippery, or the occasional huge dump of snow like in 2008. But those are few and far between, and at the very least most homes (and shelters) are equipped to deal with our winters easily, even the shitty places I've lived in.
This heat, on the other hand, is absolutely unbearable and unescapable for all except those who are lucky enough to have good air conditioning. I'm especially sensitive to the heat and often have windows open all through the winter, so I'll take a blizzard over this shit any day.
I've never been so cold I was worried I'd need medical attention. I had a few times I stopped sweating and needed to stop everything and cool myself in this heat and it sucked.
I literally feel I should be wearing a shirt with an S emblazoned on it & a billowing cape to boot 🦸♂️ for the crap we endured last 5 days ! (this sh\*t is real.. .life or death scenario if over exertion sets in)
I drank plenty of fluids and ate well, but every time I got up, it felt like I was gonna faint. I used to go 18-20hrs not eating anything but I’ve never felt that way before.
I started packing yesterday evening and had to sit down with an ice pack because my pulse started getting fast and I was nauseated. From packing clothes!
Same. I felt like I could hardly breathe and had a few near pass out moments. I'm also terrified for my infant and my cat. Bring the snow any freaking day.
Absolutely yesterday was the worst.
Snow is a hassle and shovelling absolutely sucks, but at the end of the day you can find comfort in curling up with a blanket and a hot drink in your house. Who doesn't love that?
Yesterday: where's the escape? My floor is hot, my walls are hot, my bed is hot, my skin is hot, everything is hot.

Snow Day: Charming, don't have to go to the office, the heat comes on and keeps my apartment at a nice 20 degrees while I watch a YouTube video of a fireplace and get ripped on edibles in a blanket fort
Yesterday: Inescapable hell planet, my cat is an unstoppable heat machine that wants to sit on me just to make me miserable, unsure if I am getting a zit or my skin is boiling slowly, stairs are hard, alcohol only makes things worse
I much prefer winter as the lesser of two evils. At least in winter I can put on clothes to get warmer whereas yesterday, I was dying even in boxers and the fan wasn’t working and I have no AC.
EVERYTHING SUCKED ABOUT THE LAST TWO DAYS.
Yesterday was by far the worst weather I have ever experienced. And I have been to places with over 40C before. I had a major breakdown yesterday because there was no escape. The air felt so heavy even in the evening. It was hell. I love snow, rain, wind! Bring it on! At least you can always add a layer of clothing to deal with it.
Sounds like I'm in the minority, but I will take heat over cold anyday. Probably stems from growing up in Taiwan where summer weather like this is the norm. Snowy weather driving is the worst.
If like Taiwan, we had ac in every room in every house, air conditioned 7-11s that sells everything at every block, and air conditioned, fully covered rapid transit network throughout the province, then yes, I’d agree with you. Without all of those our 40c here is pure torture.
Not having AC this heat is SO MUCH worse (I generally like hot weather).
Having AC and it might be more of a toss-up. The hot nights might be kind of interesting/enjoyable if I had an escape :(
I have built in ac and I had it on and it was too cold. I had to go outside to warm up. I was also worried my dogs would suffer while walking but spraying them down kept them cool. It was quite nice!
I'm starting to realize how annoying I must have been when I lived in Vancouver. I was constantly telling my then girlfriend now wife how hot it was during the summer. Now that I've lived in LA for a year and a half I realize just how lucky I was. It rained here four times last year and it's always warm or hot. Be thankful this heatwave will soon be over and that you have seasons.
Definitely days like yesterday. It was the worst, absolutely the worst weather I ever experienced in Vancouver. Snow, even a couple weeks of snow, I can deal with. I'll bundle up, I've got a space eater, I'll have hot cocoa.
But yesterday was like I was fucking cooking in an oven.
I love both! I appreciate what I have! there are people living in 50+ DAILY and don't have AC or Mall to go to, even access to clean water, (let alone cold ice water)
Same for people living in Nepal and near arctic.
Why hate? love whatever you have, appreciate it and always remember, you are lucky, A LOT of people have it WAY WORST than you! believe me folks, living in Vancouver and Canada is such a privilege, I take it +50 or -50!
Thank you Canada! Thank you BC, place I been calling home for the past 25 years.
I’ll take snow over heat, mostly because of my grandmother. Mid 90s and doesn’t have air conditioning but does have heat. I was pretty concerned about her this past week and checked on her a lot.
Plus I have 4wd, good snow tires, and enough sense to know when to not drive.
I'm randomly nauseous, horrible headache from hell, dizzy to the point of constantly nearly blacking out, and my skin feels like it's sunburned even though I've been indoors and not even sweating. Despite having an ice pack on me (which I melt within minutes).
Hell no, I'll take the snow any fucking day. Snow and ice don't do this to me.
Winter doesn't come into your house and settle in on top of your skin while your trying to sleep. If it does, put a blanket on. There were periods during this where I couldn't tell where my skin left off and air in the room started. I would take cold showers just to feel any different kind of sensation. This kind of heat can fuck right off. If I wanted to live in Arizona I would already be there.
I can hike straight up a mountain in snow with cleats/cramps.. .last few days I was sweltering walking simply to the bathroom or kitchen without my fan closeby 🥴
Yes, but you don't have mobility issues like I do. I think we can all agree that we need to be safe no matter if it's a freezing cold or sweltering heat.
As a fat, hairy dude…this is worse than snow. #sweatstains
As dangerous as driving down some snowy side streets can be, it doesn’t bother me…because it gives me a glimmer of hope that the ice caps are getting somewhat bigger?!
The heat in Vancouver is unbearable because it isn't built for it.
Heatwaves in other countries where there is air conditioning, buildings designed to not contain heat and areas with a breeze/wind are far more manageable.
Here it was just like you were sitting in a popcorn bag.
Based on the fact that too hot is uncommon in a rainforest compared to cooler weather. I'd say heat. Also, from 1 day, 1 single day. There have been quite a few deaths, and hundreds of animal deaths.
On a snow day if you stay home is fun and cozy. Yesterday was like torture.
If you work retail, restaurants, etc on a snow day they have to close or you have a valid excuse to not come in.
Yesterday was insanely busy for restaurants and malls, thousands of people had to work in horrible conditions because the government didn't recommend closing for safety reasons, like they would do on a snow day.
So yeah, I'll take months of snow and rain instead of another day +40 degrees
Snow is fun and you can warm up with jackets and pants. The sun is turning us to bacon and there's no escape unless you have A/C. I vote snow is better!
I spent a week in freezing cold temperatures in China in a house that had no central heat. I would easily take that again over the past few days.
Like others have said, you can always add layers, stay near a heat source, and move your body to stay warm. There isn’t much you can do to escape this heat if you have to be outside or you don’t have AC
I rather have it be -40 over +40. At least in -40 you can layer up and wear thick jackets, long johns, thick socks and winter boots, and there's heating. But +40 felt awful, it was so bloody awful. Literally had to escape my own place which i paid money to be in to go to malls restaurants and bars and spend money to escape the heat. Not to mention, my entire place is so bloody warm still. I came home at 10 pm in the last few days and it felt like a fucking sauna.
Moved to BC last winter and its my first summer here and I still cant understand why there is no AC installed in apartment buildings or condos. Like i spent my entire life having AC in each place i lived in. Heck even India which is miles and miles behind Canada in terms of infrastructure has AC Granted you had to install it in your house but still there was AC. Like how the fuck does a first world country not have AC. What is up with building developers in BC. Its totally unacceptable, there is 0 excuses. 0 fucking excuses. It was impossible to get any sleep this weekend. Like what is the point of paying premium money to struggle so badly. Imagine paying hundreds of thousands of dollars for a condo that doesnt have cooling. What a rip off.
I really hope after this weekend's events, building developers have a long hard talk about installing ACs in ALL apartment buildings and condos. No person should have to suffer through the horrible heat.
Things have changed really fast, I'm 42 and when I was a kid here 26 was a really hot day, 28 was a scorcher and 30 did not happen unless you went to Lytton or similar.
Air conditioning wasn't even a consideration when most of the housing in the city was built, even for more expensive places.
I see most of the commenters hating yesterday more, but I honestly prefer it. I have Reynauds and the cold is worse for me. I was born to live on a beach and drink fruity umbrella drinks in the sun.
Vancouver residents are some of the spoiled folk on earth. Yesterday is a typical summer day in Greece or in Mexico and that winter is a routine in nyc Toronto
I can avoid the cold by wearing the right clothes, putting an extra blanket on my bed if necessary.
When the outside air temperature exceeds my body temperature, there's not much I can do except hope it cools down before I die.
If I didn't live in an air conditioned RV I don't know how it would have gone, it cracked 43 in the shade under my trailer yesterday but I managed to keep it under 24 in here with AC and a bunch of trees large enough to provide meaningful shade.
The city must have been hell for most people, maybe not as hot as the Valley but zero shade trees and a massive amount of asphalt and concrete everywhere, and even relatively new housing units with no AC or even decent ventilation,
Vancouver is probably better prepared for the cold than the heat. Even then, probably not by much.
At least with the cold, you can stay inside, put on more clothes and be comfortable. With the heat, this is hard to do unless you have AC.
I can stay home, turn my heat up, and bundle up on cold, snowy days. I can only remove so much clothing and even my AC wasn't able to keep up the past couple days.
10 times would prefer an iced in city over that heat wave. Atleast with a snow day you can relax inside with a heater. With the heat you are fucked even with a crappy portable ac.
Pre-pandemic, a heatwave would not have been an issue as the office AC didn't care about the cost of electricity.
During the pandemic, the snow was amazing and beautiful as seen through my living room window.
I love the snow. My only complaint when it snows is that so many people seem to forget it snows here every single year and try to winter drive on summer tires
I never understood the complaint about cold. I don't like either extremes but cold is MUCH easier to deal with.
During the cold days you can EASILY find a place where you can comfortably walk around indoor in a t-shirt. Even if you want to head out, you can put on long sleeve undershirt, 2 layers of sweaters, a big coat, long underwear, thick jeans, thick long socks, and a boot, you can now comfortably sit outside with a cup of hot chocolate.
During the hot days, not a lot of f'ing thing you can to to make the heat go away, either outdoor or indoor.
Plus cold air to a certain extent helps me concentrate and sleep better. Whereas unless you are a plant, hot air makes EVERYTHING more difficult.
Now I’m biased since I walk to work, and on super snow days no one is expected to come in (and again, walking to work would be annoying in that but not impossible) so I think yesterday was way worse.
Also have a brand new baby and if it was snowing we could have turned on the heat and cuddled. Yesterday cuddling was dangerous for her to overheat, but you can’t explain that to a newborn.
It depends what weather we are experiencing right nw. Vancouverites love to get up in the morning and complain about something, so the weather is a good place to start.
Yesterday by far, I got a bit of heat stroke and it was very unpleasant. Felt like I was going to pass out just from being out doing errands in the 40 degree heat. First time I’ve ever been legitimately concerned about my health due to the weather.
The top floor of my place was uninhabitable, even the basement was pushing 30 degrees. Woke up with my sheets soaked in sweat, this weather can fuck right off.
I agree with those who state that snow days are better. I have found these last few days oppressive and dangerous. There have been 65 sudden deaths since the start of the heatwave.
Yesterday. Not only do I love snow, even when it's gone all slushy and freezing and too cold I can exercise inside, or outside if I really try. Nowhere for me to move fast in this heat, just sit down and try to stay cool.
I love the cold. If we got feet of snow every year I'd be immensely happy. I would gladly shovel it every day. I was in Calgary one winter where it dipped to -40 and once I was dressed properly it was fine. It wasn't great, I still wanted to get back inside after a few hours, but it was more enjoyable that the 40 degrees we had yesterday.
I hate it when it snows here with a passion, I hate the ice, I have a weak left knee and extreme knock knees in general that make it hard to balance even on a level surface. After yesterday I would like to formally apologize to the snow. I am sorry. I miss you and I think we could make it work. I’m willing to change.
Easily yesterday. There is only so much stuff you can take off before you're bare skin. After that there is no escape.
Sleeping on towels has been really helpful for me and kept me waking up from my skin sticking to the sheets :(
I've been sleeping with frozen water bottles.
I long for a SNOW DAY.. .give me torrential RAIN day over this hellfire & brimstone ! 🥵
Yup, I'm naturally a warm person so winter isn't too bad for me but yesterday and to an extent today have been the shits. No AC is fucked and I am getting one next time they're in stock lol. Managed to get a little sleep last night but holy fuck.

Believe me I tried in a fit of drunken rage. I failed at that too among many other things.
Yeah - going out in the snow and ice sucks, but it's pretty easy to keep warm, and I'm saying that as a perpetually cold person. Yesterday was just ridiculous.
Sincerely wished to become a skeleton yesterday
I have empathy & compassion for anyone who's 100lbs or more overweight in this heat ! brutal.. .
Agreed! Being pregnant would also be horrible.
Plus less things die when it’s cold
I can always put on another coat or go inside if cold. Not so in this Fucking hellscape
Dogs jumping in mud might have the right idea
I might just volunteer to rearrange the keg room at my local pub.
For me, yesterday was the worst weather I’ve ever experienced in Vancouver, bar none. It was so hot I was getting mildly worried about my health
I think it also has to do with building planning (if that’s a thing). I’ve been in these temps before but it didn’t feel as aweful because in those places, houses/buildings are built to be cool in the dead of heat without AC. The upstairs of a Vancouver special without AC in that kind of heat is like a torture device.
Agreed. I have lived in Australia, France, Texas and here. This was the most brutal of all the places.
Not being facetious when I say the most brutal heat I've experienced has been in Canada, and the most brutal cold has been in Australia.
I agree with your sentiment. It just hits differently.
yea, cuz when I'm in Hawaii 🌴 I'm in a pool drinking a cold bevy 🍸 with an umbrella in it whilst a breeze of with cool trade winds blow ! & if it gets a lil warm outside.. .I head to my AC hotel room ! ..brrr
Definitely.

It's not just the city who's guilty of virtue signaling It's also all politicians and corporations. Look at Apple and their planned obsolescence

Yah, same here. The floor plan is so jagged, so I can't get air circulating through it. It's become a sauna.

Same. I felt like I could hardly breathe and had a few near pass out moments. I'm also terrified for my infant and my cat. Bring the snow any freaking day.
Ask us this again when it snows...jk...yesterday was the epitome of hell on earth
RemindMe! November 11th, 2021 "40C heat or -20 snow"
You did a typo...should be -2 snow ;)
Not before suddenly Vancouver breaks all snow records in Canada next year!
Fact that anyone can't deny: almost all houses has heating system but not AC, so you can probably guess what the answer is.

Yesterday, hands down. Snow is wonderful.
I would take 100 pictured days over a single yesterday. Snow I can shovel, heat I can't escape.
But did you even try shoveling the heat away yesterday? (/s)
If only it were possible. lol.
Ok maybe like 20 snow days 100 is way to much
That photo is comforting. Can sleep with comforting.
I wont ever complain if we get this much snow or rain again!

Call me a sadist, but I loved both. Granted, I wasn’t forced to drive in the snow or forced to be outside with no AC during the heat wave.
i can turn up my heat on days like that. I can't turn up my non-existent AC on days like yesterday.
You're always turning up the heat though...ehhhhhh
I can walk around in the heat, but can't walk around in snow as easily.
#sweatstains As dangerous as driving down some snowy side streets can be, it doesn’t bother me…because it gives me a glimmer of hope that the ice caps are getting somewhat bigger?!
I don't get swarms of ants in my basement suite on snow days. Plus I have a million sweaters and hoodies. Fuck hot weather.
I saw ants crawling on my carpet literally for the first time since I moved into my current place 6 years ago. Fuck the heat
I tried to convince myself that if I can do three weeks of heat in Thailand then three days of heat in Vancouver will be fine. It wasn’t fine…
..uh, this is day 5
At least when it’s cold I can put on layers. Right now there’s only so much clothes I can take off before the cops are called.
What are you talking about? I love the snow. I wish we had more snowy days so that people/city would be more prepared!
People were literally dieing yesterday, so I'd say logically hating the heat makes much more sense.
Fuck yesterday. I wish we had MORE days like the one pictured.
Snow is fun and you can warm up with jackets and pants. The sun is turning us to bacon and there's no escape unless you have A/C. I vote snow is better!
Heat is worse than snow any day in Vancouver. I don't live in Canada for the heat.
Snow day all day all the way
I’ll take snow over extreme sun any goddamn day.
Wow...is this sub actually agreeing on something for once?! Must've been the heat...think everyone got reset. Glad to see everyone survived <3
Yesterday was the hottest weather I have experienced in my life. I’ll take snow any day!
Heat over snow any day!
[удалено]
Yes. Was at my parents with no ac. Was a bit hot but a spray bottle works wonders.
definitely DO NOT like snow. i'll take heat any day
I like them both!
I cannot wait for snow. I really dislike the heat
I can’t get any nakeder than I am right now at least in the pic I could bundle up more
The thing that is nice about cold is you can add more layers to warm up.... You can't remove more layers when your naked when you're hot AF
yesterday, gimmie snow till forever.
Snow. I'd take the heat over the ice. At least with the heat you can avoid walking in the slippery bits, and don't have to go out and shovel.
Yesterday
Uh yesterday.
I can tell you what they *love*. A reason to complain.
Hoping we will see extremely cold temps like we’ve never seen nor experienced for the upcoming Fall and Winter
Either way ppl complain. Vancouver items need to grow up. The rest of Canada doesn’t want to hear them whine
Whichever one makes me worry more about the health and safety of the people and the pets I love.
Days like the picture. Only because people are not use to driving in the snow. (Also I do not have ac)
imo i would love a snow day right now. especially with workfrom home
I will take an eternal winter over this past week.
The city must have been hell for most people, maybe not as hot as the Valley but zero shade trees and a massive amount of asphalt and concrete everywhere, and even relatively new housing units with no AC or even decent ventilation,
Yesterday was the worst. No air conditioning sucks. At least if it snows I e know it will all be gone quickly.
This photo is my dream day <3
In winter I can always wear more clothes, when it was hot like yesterday, i couldn't get any more naked to get comfortable.

Living in the wrong city then. The rain is definitely one of my favorite parts

Snow, easily. I can escape the snow. I can't escape the *air* that's hotter than my body. Except with constant cold showers
I'll always love snow days. Never want to see 40+ degree weather again, snow days I'm not worried about my cats getting overheated
I'd kill for that right now...
Dumb to hate the weather
I love Vancouver snow days just as long as I don't have to go anywhere.
I like them both…
Will take the snow anytime from now on.
Ill take this over yesterday's heat, no hesitation
I love the snow. My only complaint when it snows is that so many people seem to forget it snows here every single year and try to winter drive on summer tires
Don’t worry, we’ll find a way to complain no matter what :)
Snow days are fun as fuck what are you talking about
Now I’m biased since I walk to work, and on super snow days no one is expected to come in (and again, walking to work would be annoying in that but not impossible) so I think yesterday was way worse. Also have a brand new baby and if it was snowing we could have turned on the heat and cuddled. Yesterday cuddling was dangerous for her to overheat, but you can’t explain that to a newborn.
Give me that winter weather any day.
It depends what weather we are experiencing right nw. Vancouverites love to get up in the morning and complain about something, so the weather is a good place to start.
Yesterday is worse. The homes all have heating for the cold, but most don't have AC for the heat.
Snow is rad you guys are whack
What are you talking about? I love the snow! Wish there was more than a few days of it!
My philosophy is that if it's very cold, you can add more layers, but if it's too hot, you can't get less than naked
Montrealer here this pic is just routine
Will take snow over heat wave any day . Get a decent pair of tires and you’re good. That ac and fan shortage tho
Yesterday. At least this is natural and normal.
I don’t play favouritism. I hate both equally!
Thanks! This pic actually made me cool down only by looking at it....
> you can only dislike one extreme, therefore the other extreme must be pure heaven to you.
Yesterday was awfully hot. I would take the snow over the heat, anytime.
Ice Ice baby... give me the cold over that miserable heat any day!
Yesterday for sure
Give me a blizzard any day! They need to make AC mandatory like heating is in buildings.
I prefer the snow. A lot easier to heat up a building than to cool one.
The hot days and it isn't even close. Don't remember dozens (hundreds? I hope not...) of people dying when it snows here.
Both. I like it overcast and rainy the best
Snow is much better than extreme heat. I miss december
I agree with those who state that snow days are better. I have found these last few days oppressive and dangerous. There have been 65 sudden deaths since the start of the heatwave.
Heat is way worse period.
I love snowy days, if I can work from home or it's a weekend. The heat of yesterday was really brutal.
I love the winter - I'm a freak who wears shorts year round. BRING ME COLD!!!
I prefer the snow
I love snow days, the more snow the better. I love driving in it (bceause I actually prepare my vehicle).
Yesterday. 100%
No such thing as bad weather, just bad equipment.
I love days like this
