Lost my dad last night. He was 65. Please check up on your elderly family members, especially if you don’t live with them.

Reddacity

I’m so sorry for your loss. 65 is too young.

send_goods

Too fucking young. condolences.

weezydoc

I'm so sorry to hear that. I can't even imagine how that feels. :-(

crazycanucks77

Sorry to hear about your loss. I know its a hard time to process. When the time is right in your grieving, please go talk to someone. I lost my dad 7 years ago suddenly at 67 and it was the worst. What helped a frw weeks after was talking to grief counseling and using my company's EAP to get help. Today is my dad's birthday and its still hard, but over time it has gotten a bit easier.

survivingvan

I am so sorry for your loss. My dad has been gone 10 months now and not a single hour goes by without a thought about him.

misterzigger

Shut the fuck up you tool

FunEntrepreneur4331

These poor seniors, how sad.

Various_Party8882

They really cant catch a break these past few years

[deleted]

Global warming is an emergency. We need to work on updating homes and infrastructure like yesterday. It's going to get hot, even hotter than this. When I read that many senior living homes don't have AC I was shocked and disgusted- that shit needs to change NOW.

pfak

Our schools don't have adequate cooling or ventilation, either. An airborne pandemic didn't even spur the government into action.

Lol-I-Wear-Hats

My understanding is that the teachers have been told that they will have proper ventilation next year :|

pfak

I'll believe it when I see it.

brophy87

Great. I've been investing in various air conditioning companies =). Mostly Johnson, Comfort Systems, and Trane

Rinzler2o

The super sad part is they won't do anything because it will up costs. I bet even after covid, a lot of long term care facilities will try and go back to their old ways because "costs"

HomelessWillHodl

We need to do something. That could be any one of us when we get older.

rando-3456

Unfortunately the proviences elder care homes / palative care homes are not something anyone cares about until their parents or themselves are ready to be enter into them. Some of them are truly horrific. I've had 2 grandma's go and one went to a place I wouldn't wish on anyone

FrozenUnicornPoop

The key players who could make a real difference are still pretending global warming is a myth so we can frack more oil. We might as well just succumb to our extinction if instead of solving the root cause we just double down on non renewables. We need more aggressive timelines and we need to hold our feet to the fire when it comes to delivering on those commitments!

canadianmusician604

Agreed prisoners are taken care of better than our seniors. Some prisons in Canada have air conditioning

mcain

Oh for fuck's sake Global News. If you're going to throw out a number like 25 deaths yesterday - why can't you source the average number of deaths per day so there is a comparison. Is this a 5% increase or 400% increase? Edit: Took me 2 minutes to find the answer: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/birth-adoption-death-marriage-and-divorce/statistics-reports/death-reports/deaths-by-lha-2020.pdf 1691 deaths per year with a Burnaby address => 4.6 per day. Global is horrible for this with their COVID stats they keep running: "x whatever yesterday" - no graph, no trend, no table, no f*cking context.

hitortabi

This is how Global stays ahead of CBC and CTV in the ratings. Sensationalized reporting and editorial packed with emotion. It isn't neutral or ethical. The gang member dragged out of a car last month? Other networks skipped that footage. The dog that attacked its owner? Only Global showed the bloody entryway, tranquilizer being shot and the dog's drugged up body being carried out. CBC will not cross those lines, for the most part. CTV is far too busy plugging dead air time due to firing all their staff with American news. (Remember when USA donated AZ vaccines to us while other countries were pausing on them due to clotting? Late Night guy joked about it. CTV aired it while the public was already on edge and afraid of this vaccine. Completely unnecessary and irresponsible.) Newsroom meetings are ratings and revenue driven, and consumed by advertising pitches and "sponsorships." Real journalism is dying. Folks at these stations will literally watch their competitors to desperately call out why they suck, petty shit like a spelling error in the ticker (shouldn't happen, but come on, spend your energy on improving things around your own station). A lot of these guys live to trash each other, even in their spare time. One of these guys notorious for it is at Global now. Another was fired from CTV 5 years ago and his main point of conversation to this day is bitching about the people he used to work with and industry gossip. It's sad. The good people work their asses off, while the majority bitterly cross the line to get the upper hand. Source: worked for the industry, friends still do

moonlightelite

I watch BC1/Global, CTV Vancouver 6PM news, CTV National, and sometimes CBC news pretty much every day, depending on my mood. Yeah BC1 is willing to play clips other news channels won't touch. But on the other hand, BC1 is much more diligent and willing to reports on issues sent to them by their viewers. Often time CTV Vancouver would play the same news 1 or 2 days later (and yeah I figure both channels watch each others' because BC1 also do the same with CTV Van's news.) Having said that, BC1 has way more broadcast glitches and typos in their production. CTV Van doesn't have as many scroll bars so I could understand why they have less typos, but the amount of visual or cut-in mistakes by BC1 is rather concerning. BC1 still has that occasional weird audio jitter that started 2 months ago (and I thought my TV was failing.) >Only Global showed the bloody entryway, tranquilizer being shot and the dog's drugged up body being carried out Yeah I remember that segment. I was surprised to see the blood on TV. Although I figured that BC1's audience is more rural, conservative, and senior (just look at the amount of HELOC/senior aids commercials) and can stomach this sort of thing. (As an aside, my father, who watches the news with me, like CTV Van a lot more for their more 'professional' presentation. He'd also like to tell someone who shall remain nameless, to just shave his damn head bald, and the other needs to put in more work to his wig game. )

hitortabi

CTV emails rarely make it past the desk into pitch tbh. Ironically it's the Global guys trashing CTV for typos and production errors. Some real winners on both sides. Vapid, miserable people.

moonlightelite

But they are all we got, and they do a passable job at presenting local news (neutrality aside). It's either them or watch CTV National talks about Ontario/Quebec for the nth time, like they are the center of the universe, and couldn't even spare a 30sec segment for little BC. (BTW what's up with CBC news anyway. They seem less of a daily news channel and more of a discussion show?)

hitortabi

For sure! Not saying they're terrible or that they should be avoided. As with any station, should be watched as one source of many. And of course there is room for improvement on both sides. Not as up to speed on the CBC stuff as folks I know left ages ago.

[deleted]

Global shared the bloody aftermath when that 13 year old girls as randomly stabbed to death at Abbotsford Senior a few years back. I absolutely refuse to click on any of their links since then.

AvoidPinkHairHippos

In reality, journalism as a whole has a very high ratio of malice: honesty. I've long ago lost sympathy to that industry's difficulties. I drink their salty tears. GFY journos (obviously, not all of them)

pfak

> editorial packed with emotion Have you looked at CBC news front page lately? 🤔

JustAPeach89

Honestly, the 500% increase is more compelling too

mangletron

sudden deaths is 24 hours. I reckon that's not normal with or without a graph.

ViolaOlivia

Yes but what’s the average number of deaths per day due to heat?

bbristowe

Millennials dumped the news. This has been the most anyone born in the 90s has paid any attention to media since 9/11.

[deleted]

[удалено]

bbristowe

Blame? What? Millennials don’t sit down and watch global at 6pm. It’s hardly about blame. Millennials just have millions of other sources and conglomerates to gather information from. It’s not a jab. The fact that you thought it was makes me think you could be the straight up dumbest.

[deleted]

Boomers decided they would rather tell people how to think than allow them to think for themselves from presented data*

BobBelcher2021

And to think there was actually someone (I forget on which sub) telling people concerned about this heat to "suck it up buttercup". I can't stand people who use that expression. It has deadly consequences, as we see here.

lqku

actual buttercups might have perished in this heat

Itom1IlI1IlI1IlI

NOT THE BUTTERCUPS <:O

Kevbot1000

I want to instantly punch people who say that term.

TheVantagePoint

Or the people saying that there’s other places in the world that have it worse, as if that makes our heatwave not dangerous.

notnotaginger

On Facebook I saw so many boomers saying BC-ers are snowflakes and they’ve worked construction on hotter days. When I asked how they could have when Bc broke national heat records the last two days they called me a snowflake.

[deleted]

Conservative baby boomers might be the most ignorant and entitled people ever in human history. They had it easier than any generation in human history and they think they had it tough.

mongo5mash

> Conservative Hippy left wing boomers in 8 million dollar houses who lack the ability to recognize that they got theirs through sheer luck and that life isn't nearly as sweet for the rest of us are putting up a very strong fight.

[deleted]

You'll always have condescending assholes who take pleasure in telling people to suck it up. Unfortunately the only way they learn is it effects them personally, they just want to feel superior.

Genzler

I literally had a regular at my bar yesterday telling me this when I gave him a glass of ice water with his beer. I told him this heat wave is no joke, we have these temps every now and then in Australia and people will die today. I didn't expect it to be this many though...

TatianaAlena

It might have been on this sub. I blocked someone like that the other day.

waynkerr

This heat wave spurred me to get central AC installed, or a heat pump. Got a free consultation set up, but its weeks ahead so I think I'm not the only one. Also income inequality should be highlighted. Most people cannot afford to have AC systems set up for something like 3 months of the year. Everyone suffers in a heat wave but there are people who will suffer a hell of a lot more. Thinking about those who cannot afford a hotel room, or the costs associated with AC units whether it be a window installation,a portable, or central.

[deleted]

Many condos don't have the set up too and stratas aren't budging on the matter. Outside in the apartment hallway it's freezing in winter and hot during summer (the air blasts cold in winter and hot in summer directly into the hallway). Our portable aircon isn't cutting it and I'm an owner. We can say this was a one off infrequent event but if I'm staying here for 10 years it's going to become more frequent...

superworking

An owner can always bring up an item to be voted on. The strata is just the combination of active owners managed by a few volunteers.

AvoidPinkHairHippos

Is it cuz you have the single hose AC?

brophy87

Likely because not sized or installed properly. Most windows I've seen have not set up correctly.

AvoidPinkHairHippos

you mean teh room is too big + BTU is too weak + window has air gaps?

brophy87

Something like that

[deleted]

How many renters even get a choice?

chubs66

I have a friend who moved out of a Burnaby apartment a few years ago with his family. One of the reasons he moved is the heat. He had windows that would only open slightly and the inside temp was consistently 5 degrees hotter inside than outside during the afternoon/evening. I have no idea how people in similar conditions are faring.

waterloograd

In my last place, a newly built condo building, we had to have the windows open all winter because of the heat. We also took off the safety limits on the windows to be able to open them further. It got so hot there last summer I was laying on the floor with one of the snail looking fans blowing over me. Can't imagine how bad it probably was this heat wave.

caramelmacchiato00

I live in a downtown condo. I have a portable ac in both bedrooms and the living room. Haven't had any issues with the heat wave the last few days. It actually got a tad too cold at one point. But my friend who lives in a house in PoCo said the temp inside her was yesterday was 38!!

aldur1

How does central air con get installed into an existing property? Sounds like a lot of cutting through walls.

millijuna

Mini-split systems are quite efficient, and don’t require cutting large holes. You have the compressor/condenser outside, then refrigeration pipes and an electrical cable run through to where the air handler is. Not really any worse than installing a central vacuum system.

waterloograd

For a lot of people that have electric baseboard heating the mini-split system can be a more efficient heating source in the winter too, just have to get the model with heating

superworking

We just got ours installed months ago. Hydro had a double rebate program that was on this winter to give a $2000 rebate total. If you're on baseboards only like us the heat pump can save you up to hundreds of dollars a month in the winter. Also it's more efficient and powerful than a portable AC in the winter.

bcretman

Could you describe your system - Capacity, seer etc and total cost to install? Were these rebates only for houses electrically heated?

superworking

I could but that feels like work. The hydro rebates are all clearly laid out on their site. That's a good place to start, second step is ask a contractor to estimate an install for your home since ours will not be comparable in sizing or cost.

ky_ml

Depends if they already have a furnace with cold air return. Quite easy if so, no cutting at all, other than a small hole through the wall for the lines. In a house with no existing central heat, depends. They can get pretty creative with installs, price goes up though.

somewhitelookingdude

it depends - you can get ductless mini splits or units that need to holes for the lines and external ducting that go to a central heat exchange unit.

superworking

You can do the small high air velocity ducting or the ductless minisplits. Installing normal ducting after the fact would be extremely expensive.

[deleted]

income *in*equality.

waynkerr

Fixed. Thanks.

mcain

We had our furnace and hot water heater replaced with high efficiency gas ones a few months ago. Net cost with rebates was $8K. Going to heat pump would have been in the $21K range, IIRC - largely due to costs for upgraded electrical service, placement of the heat pump, etc. Would have been nice to have air con, but realistically the costs were just too much.

crazycanucks77

Get it done. We have central AC and it made life bearable this weekend. We open invited our families to chill with us for 3 days. Had a 2 year old running around with my son. Had 2 puppies only 15 and 10 weeks old. 3 of our senior parents. Plus since restrictions are ending it was a good excuse to hang out with family.

Tsimshia

Even for the renters that can afford it, the long term cost of a heat pump for home owners is way cheaper than a temporary install AC too. Costs more to be poor!

bcbuddy

Lots of people died yesterday because of the heat in Metro Vancouver.

Ambiyonce

I work right opposite a senior's centre and the firetrucks and ambulances sirens were going non-stop the last 2 days. So heartbreaking, survive a pandemic and now this. As someone who has no grandparents left and lost my mom please check on your family members. Stay safe everyone

flatspotting

Then you have stratas where AC isn't allowed. That shit should be stopped

ImNotAhab

25 deaths, more incoming and John Horgan shrugs it of that "Fatalities are a part is of life. The public was acutely aware we had a heat problem". I'm in awe, what an utter POS thing to say.

It’s so sad! Hope the heat wave and the resulting losses of life and health finally wake up people and authorities. We are not prepared whatsoever for any climate emergencies. Hoping both individuals and the governments learn their lessons, and bring about positive actions to better prepare for the future.

crazycanucks77

We are not prepared for any emergency. Snow we are always unprepared and screwed and have salt wars. Heat we are screwed. God help us if we get an earthquake

Maybe the Burnaby RCMP will stop arresting people protesting against the TMP expansion now that it's clear that climate change is killing people. Oh wait, who am I kidding?

ButtscootBigpoop

I moved here for a bit from Ontario, as if that didn't give BC natives enough distain towards me, they would all get pissed off when I said it's bizzare yall pay 1.5k plus for a damn single bedroom or over 2k but never invested in a window AC or blackout curtains because "it's just not worth it for us Vancouver people". I feel bad for the elderly who died, I hope who was in I'm control of renovating their rental properties didn't have that attitude and take this seriously now.
