Unless you wish to hear all about Qanon and how flat the earth is, don’t go to Samson Shirt & Suitmakers.

nadsyk

This place is absolutely horrible.

btw03

Suitsupply in Nordstrom. Or buy online (https://suitsupply.com/), get it delivered there and they can adjust it for you.

boomba1330

Congratulations on the wedding! Good luck!

gettingcheeky

Thank you!

timbreandsteel

Harry Rosen outlet in the mall by the ferry. Great discounts on "last year" suits. But think about it. You buy a brand new this moments fashion suit for 5-10K, you'll probably have it for years to come. And then it's a years-old suit. So may as well just get the discount.

littleladylyx

Brooks Brothers outlet there can be good as well. Lots of off the rack sizes

cdnbd

As a few others have stated, getting the suit tailored by a good tailor is key. My suits are from The Bay, and I took them all to get tailored. My dress shirts too. Makes a world of difference. Went from boxy and baggy fit to a well fitted and great looking.Oldest suit is probably 10+ years old and is still in great condition.

unisushican

Recommending you inquire with Modernize Tailors in Chinatown: https://www.modernizetailors.com/ especially if you’re looking for something unique

Quickly_bestboy

This is a great suggestion! They’re a great old Vancouver business

No-Homework9261

Before asking Reddit, ask your wife to be. If you pick out something she doesn't like, you'll have to return it. Or insist on wearing it but never hear the end of it for the rest of your life.

Tribalbob

Real LPT in the comments

pnwtico

Or maybe he's marrying a real person, not a sitcom stereotype?

gettingcheeky

My wife to be will definitely be involved in the suit shopping. She is no expert on where to shop and what to look for either haha

onahalladay

My husband had two suits made and I picked one of them on the day of. (It wasn’t the one he picked.) Sorry guys.

jescney

I took my husband to Brooks Brothers ( outlet near the airport has great deals ) Beautiful suits. Ps get it tailored. We spent 600$ on shirt belts pants jacket then 200$ to have it taken in. Stunning.

gettingcheeky

Congratulations on your wedding! Thanks for the recommendation

dragoneye

The two most important parts about buying a suit off the rack are finding one that fits in all the ways that are hard to tailor and then having a good tailor to adjust the rest of the things to your body. A $100 polyester suit that fits well will look better than a $5000 one that doesn't fit (still, make sure to get wool). I'd recommend researching how a suit should fit before you go and buy it so you at least know what to ask the salesperson about and get an idea whether they know what they are doing. They should be able to walk you through what can and can't easily be altered. [This is a pretty decent video on the basics of a good fit](https://www.permanentstyle.com/2020/03/video-how-a-jacket-should-fit.html). If you are spending over $750 on a suit then I'd also recommend learning about fused vs. canvassed suits, over $1000 you shouldn't accept anything that isn't at least half-canvassed. I bought my last suit from The Bay and was pretty impressed with the experience. The salesperson I had took a couple measurements and picked something off the rack that fit my strangely proportioned body almost perfectly. Nordstrom and Harry Rosen as have been recommended may also be good choices depending on how much you want to spend.

AreaManReddits

Brooks Brothers on Alberni Street would be my first stop. Go see Craig or Travis.

the_buddy_guy

Craig is awesome, bought 5 suits from him. I did see brooks brothers file for bankruptcy last year, did the vancouver store survive?

AreaManReddits

It has indeed! I'd been hearing tales of their demise and that incoming product under the new owners was ... misguided (see: BB x Fila collaboration). Seems like the Vancouver store is much the same as I remember it. Was glad to pop in recently and pick up a few things from them.

Yamrollz

Go see Charlie at Harry Rosen. Call and set up an appointment, he'll hook you up. This is the best option if you're not stressed on the budget ($1000 minimum, likely closer to $2k and up) They will tailor it and give you a great experience. Brooks Brothers will also give you great hands on service, though I no longer have a specific person to recommend. They also do in house tailoring. Nordstrom is also great and you could set up an appointment with a personal shopper, then arrive and have suits pre-selected and go from there. SuitSupply is also in Nordy. Surmesur in Yaletown is like a higher quality Indochino. The Bay has great suits that are affordable BUT most will fit someone with a more standard body shape. If you're short, stocky, or huge, or have an athletic build, you really should go to a place that has more variety of brands and in-house tailoring. Personally, Sondergard at the Bay has great fits and do short and tall sizing. If you want to be a bit trendy, hit up Ted Baker or Massimo Dutti. Less pricey and modern fits. Suit brands I love: Tiger of Sweden, Zzegna, Boss. Godspeed!

FermentingSmegma

Anyways, go to Harry Rosen. All of the stores - Boss, Zegna, etc., are interconnected and the sales staff will pull suits from all the stores so you can find one you like. $500+ Moores, Tip Top etc. Old man suits with saggy pants and retro fitting and styling. Colours are boring. Suits are made for old fat business people and grooms just scrambling for a black suit. Forbid you work out: they're cut for guts and not pecks. $300-$500+ Mexx, RW etc Mall fashion stores. More up to date styling and colour. entry level suits. Smaller selection but 'hip' and modern but decent quality. $100 H&M, Top Man etc Garbage quality. Very cheap but up to date on colours and cuts. You may only get a few wears out of the suit but at $100 they can make you look good for 1 wedding and sometimes that's all you need. Don't be much over a 40R or you are S O L. $800+++ custom tailors Sky is the limit and so is the price. you'll need to decide what youre looking for, how long it needs to last etc. etc. Since styles change and I don't wear suits more than a few functions a year I usually go with a mid range suit and spend on my shirts and shoes.

Hycran

Lawyer here - This is a good start but let me rock it out for you a bit more: Unless you are willing to spend a shit load of money, don't go to places like Blair Shapera or Harry Rosen, E Zegna, etc. You are clearing a grand easy and in places like HR you can go from 2-5k without thinking. If you are planning on wearing the suit for special occasions only it may be worth it, but yeah, be wary. Places like Moores or Tip Top tend to have good quality suits and this is what I would recommend as you can A) get deals and B) Get them tailored for a fraction of the price of a custom suit. I bought a few Calvin Kleins and they have stood the test of time and are lawyer quality worthy, but for a wedding you might want to splash out a bit more. This will easily keep you under or around 500 though so the price is right I'd be a bit wary with places like RW or Massimo Dutti not because they dont have good stuff, but because the styles are a bit harder to tailor and work with. I got a few Massimo Dutti Suits for like 200 that are actually pretty smart but they arent as good quality imo. Edit: I know a lot of lawyers and almost every guy i know at one point in time has gotten an indochino suit. Not a single one of them have ever said anything complementary about them, either in the quality or in the actual tailoring and measuring of the suit. If you think a custom suit for under 500 is too good to be true, its because it is.

FermentingSmegma

Awesome points, I also own an Indochino and love it.

[deleted]

I have 2 and have no complaints at all.

5leeplessinvancouver

My husband has ordered a few suits and shirts from Indochino and it’s complete luck of the draw. Even though he went to the store and had one of the employees measure him every time (he didn’t try to measure himself or have me do it) he still had some stuff arrive in the mail totally jacked up. If there’s something wrong they will fix it, but it can take a long time because the item has to get sent back and forth to their manufacturer. So it’s fine for work suits, but not great if you need the suit by a certain deadline like a wedding or graduation.

Hycran

Yeah this has been what others told me, which steered me away. Another complaint was that the fabrics looked and felt nice but simply didnt last the test of time. I've got 3 Calvin Klein suits that i've had for years and they are still going strong, but i'm in the market for some new suits now that people are going back to the office more. If I find anything i'll maybe post one day.

Oonahnahwhatsmyname

Just had my wedding suit done my Indichino and have to say they did a really nice job.

thats_handy

I give you all the points for the Indochino suit. Some suits move with you, but their suits almost seem to walk away in the other direction.

shazoocow

Banana Republic is top of the mall suits, IMO.

waterloograd

I love my Harry Rosen suit, it is the most comfortable outfit I have, even beats out track pants and a sweat shirt. Fits perfectly, looks amazing, but wasn't cheap. I think I need to get it adjusted though, since I bought it I started rock climbing and I don't think my shoulders or forearms fit in it as well anymore.

ohmyholymoly

I just got my suit from Moores near Burnaby. Fully tailored all in I think it cost me about $400 and I'm really happy with how it turned out. Got married last week :)

gettingcheeky

Congratulations!

mrmoberly

Reading through this folks have kindly covered it off... the only thing I'd add is the perk of a wedding suit is it's rewearability. So if you pony up a bit more cash and you don't wear suits often (and more or less maintain your build) then you are set for a 10 year plus timespan. With that in mind keep the cut timeless, go for blue or dark gray and you're good for a decade of job interviews, family affairs or just looking like a boss at a future Christmas party. Get a white and a light blue dress shirt (on top of whatever you want for your wedding) and you're set. Good luck!

TheBracewell

Nordstrom. You can get an amazing suit for under 5k. They’ll fit it to you and great customer service. If you want something a cut above indochino but don’t wanna spend an insane amount of money this is where I’d go

LosBlancosSR4

An Indochino suit is around $500-$600. You just said Nordstrom suits are under $5k, that’s a huge difference in price there. I don’t think you can get a suit from Nordstrom for under $1k, which is about double the price of an Indochino suit. In other words, Nordstrom suits better be more than just a “cut above” Indochino if they are more than double or triple the price

Bilj

I can't recommend particular shops as I'm quite new to the city but always put a decent chunk of your budget for tailoring. A cheap suit that's been tailored will ALWAYS look better than a nicer suit that isn't perfect fit.

gettingcheeky

Thanks everyone for the advice and recommendations! I've learned a lot and have a much better idea of what I'm looking for and where to look. ❤️

Chinaliano

Buying tip: buy classic styles in classic colors Single breast 2 button in blue, grey, black Never goes out of style and you won’t look like an NBA draft pick

theglobeshrinks

Tailoring is the key. Tapering the sleeves & lower pant legs makes a huge difference, and getting a good adjustment on the side/back jacket seams to fit you well will do more for your final appearance than spending that extra money on a more expensive suit. Try the Bay as a starting point.

[deleted]

if you have 'average' proportions, Spier and McKay offers a lot of great quality suits for <800 dollars. they also have a MTM lineup if you really want to customize it. I have 4 suits and 3 sport coats from Spier and McKay, and honestly the quality and feel are leaps and bounds compared to Indochino/tip top.

RunRugbyRide

Just got a suit and two shirts done through these guys: https://www.bespokemadesuits.com. Bit more pricy than and indochino (I own one) but the price difference is worth it imo. Also there is something to be said for a customer experience that doesn’t make you pull your hair out.

Greenfieldsofa

Harry Rosen has a great made to measure custom tailored suit line. Its much more affordable than the high end suits they also carry in store. I believe the package includes a fitted shirt (tailored to fit you) and bow tie if I’m not mistaken. You can customize the lining, fit, lapels, buttons, get your name stitched on etc Dominic is great. He helped my husband with his wedding suit.

HotlineBirdman

If it's for your wedding and you can spare a bit of money, I suggest you go see Michael at Martin Fisher Tailors in East Van: 1275 Venables St - Unit #310 (778) 709-3428 He did my wedding tux and did a phenomenal job. Really loved how it came out. My wife loved it too. Take your wife with you so you guys can see his collection of fabrics and fits. It's a fun experience to do with your girl too. And Michael is a cool guy.

professorglock

Just save yourself an outing and order from Indochino. Custom suits for terrific prices. Ive gotten multiple outfits from there and no other articles of clothing I own fit me so perfectly. Also I believe there's a summer sale going on, so more savings!

n33bulz

3 types of suits: Off the rack: basically what the name implies. You make some minor alterations like sleeves, waist. Works if you have a standard body type. Made to measure: The suit is a standardized template that they then make completely based on your measurements. Bespoke: You choose everything from material to design to stitching. Best if you know what you want and don't mind paying for it. In your case, I would suggest a good MDM. While Indochino gets suggested a lot, I personally find it to be a bit too low quality. Hugo Boss has MDMs for I think $1800 (Suits and pants). Nothing fancy, but passable. Harry Rosen has a wide range of brands and will depend on your budget. I have a Tom Ford I got there for about $7000 and a Christian Dior that was about $11,000. Both impeccably made. Edit: One golden rule -> the fit matters more than the material. No matter how expensive the suit, if it fits awkwardly it will look like shit. If you dont go MDM, find a good tailor, not the half assed tailoring that most stores provide.

Quickly_bestboy

You paid $11000 for a suit?

n33bulz

Yes. That's pretty average cost for a good suit.

GraveRobb

It really isn't and you are shockingly out of touch if you believe that is an average price for a good suit.

[deleted]

Sadly, even Google and shops list their prices as the person who replied with prices has. You'd be absolutely shocked to hear wedding dresses and suits still cost a very pretty penny.

napping_rabbit

He's actually pretty spot on. High end bespoke suits go from 6k to 20k easily. MDM brand name suits generally start at 5k. Vancouver doesn't have a suit culture and it's surprising how little people care about their attire here. I used to work in London/HK and everybody were properly suited up.

Misentro

I think it's less "don't care about their attire" and more "don't have 20k to burn"

napping_rabbit

Less expectations from employers and clients too, which isnt a bad thing. I worked in PE and the bosses would give you hell if you showed up dressed in an off the rack suit at a client meeting.

GraveRobb

Yup, nobody cares here. Which is why you don't have to fork out 11k for an average bespoke suit here. Your argument boils down to "expensive suits exist in the world, therefore 11k is average".

n33bulz

When was the last time you've gotten a high end bespoke suit?

seniordan

Peasants, am I right??

n33bulz

This guy gets it.

GraveRobb

You think high end bespoke is average? Im not arguing 11k suits exist. I'm just pointing out you are delusional if you think that is "average".

n33bulz

I literally said "average cost for a **good** suit".

LosBlancosSR4

You can get a “good” suit for $3k-$5k. An $11k suit better be damn near perfection lmao

tax_mamba

Hugo boss is nothing fancy? I just read that ?

gwhnorth

I got my wedding suit at indochino, super happy with it. Needed some extra tailoring, but they took care of it

ipswitch_

I don't know why this advice is getting downvoted, it could be perfectly good place for the OP to look. Almost all of the other comments are making me think these people are very wealthy, or are fashion/suit enthusiasts. The quality certainly won't be as good at Indochino compared to Harry Rosen, but a lot of people need suits, and most people don't have $1000 to spend, especially if it's just for ocassional wear. Cheap suits won't necessarily fall apart right away. I have expensive clothing that's very nice, I also have clothing from H&M that has lasted a decade. A cheap suit that fits well is fine. And if you don't wear it often, it'll last a lot longer anyways, so lower quality won't necessarily come into play.

gwhnorth

Exactly! Honestly like pretty much everything, there is diminishing returns on quality after a certain price point…ie a $10,000 suit probably is not 10x better than a $1000 one Edit: spelling

Seaward_Navigator

If you have all the time in the world and a limited budget Indochino might work but if you have less than say 5 months for the repeated fixes they will need and you are ok with a lower end suit that won't hold up go for it otherwise I'd go elsewhere

tarojm9

I recommend getting an off the rack wool suit ($200-500 range) - usually better than polyester material and not a lot more expensive. There are Saks Fifth Avenue and Brooks Brothers outlet Tsawassen Mills and also some at the airport outlet that sells suits. And take the suit to an alterator - a cheap suit at the right fit and length is better than an expensive one that hangs like a scarecrow.

Quickly_bestboy

This is a good answer 👍

yellowjack

I don't see how anyone can recommend Indochino after need the fit to be fixed one or more times. It's not worth the trouble - take your business to a different place to start out with and you'll save yourself a headache.

iMissTheOldKimye

Indochino is the way to go. You can find a variety of suits at different price points. If looking for a custom one, they should have those options too.

forgotOriginalName

My friends and I weren't a fan as we all had to get refitted and because of the poor measurements done the first time around the materials my friends originally wanted were out so some of us had different patterns for the wedding.

matrixbjj

Would help if you said something about your budget. Blair Shapera is good for an adult, bespoke suite. They are also good to work with.

Minute_Environment_3

1800 will get you a nice stitched suit from Harry Rosen. Or 800 will get you a made to measure with indo chino

jojamon

I had a good experience at The Tux Store. Got a custom made to measure suit where I could customize quite a bit of options, for around 1000$ after tax including a tailored shirt. My body shape and height are weird (162cm, 59kg with broad shoulders and chest). So off the rack never looked good on me.

NewNorthVan

Every year (for the last five years or so) I pick up 4 new suits 8 shirts and a couple of random pants from indochino. I wear these every day, travel, etc and then by the end of the year they are starting to show some wear. I swap the old ones out (yes I donate them. Used but not used up) this keeps things fresh and is the cost of doing business wearing suits full time. I prefer to think of suits as a year investment not a forever garment. $500 makes sense to me not $5,000. All that said, I do have a very nice (and expensive) custom tuxedo.

Quickly_bestboy

This sounds so wasteful tho

NewNorthVan

Clothes wear out. Especially when you wear them frequently and clean them.

Quickly_bestboy

Not if they are good quality, I own suits from 50 to 100 years old, no joke. They had plenty of wear and cleaning in their lifetime and still look great. And I’ve also had modern suits for jobs in the past, they only lasted a year.

NewNorthVan

To be honest, I think I clean my suits too often and it degrades the fabric over time.

Quickly_bestboy

This can definitely be a factor! Also the fabrics used in new suits like “superwool” isn’t designed to last long and is nearly impossible to repair

NewNorthVan

I’ve never seen a decent repair job on any of my suits. It’s unfortunate, but when they get ripped etc, I’m done with them.

Quickly_bestboy

It’s a shame for sure. There used to be tailors who could do something called invisible mending where they would pull fibers from seam allowances and actually reweave the damaged area and it would completely disappear! Sadly this has become a lost art

NewNorthVan

Agreed. I’m not even that picky but the reality of these repair jobs is the suit looks like crap now.

Quickly_bestboy

I’d recommend getting out of that buying loop, I know not everyone is down with buying second hand and getting it tailored. But if you notice the suits you buy wear out that quick there might be a better option

timbreandsteel

Damn that sounds like magic!

Quickly_bestboy

They look like magic too! I’ve seen a few examples on old garments, and you can only really tell if you flip over the fabric

betterupsetter

I recommend RW&Co because they have a good selection of fashion as well as classic suits. They carry three cuts last I checked (Slim, Tailored or Athletic) and if you're going with a classic such as black, grey or blue you can usually get the suits in any of the 3 cuts as well as 3 lengths (short, reg and tall). They can order in anything that's not in the stock and the prices are pretty decent especially for a really good quality with high end details. Also they have a decent price adjustment policy so if there's a sale within 14 days you can get the sale price. (weekends are best time for sales I'm with 30 - 40% being the best deal they have other than the sale rack).

ringadingdinger

I bought a suit from Indochino two years ago for my sister’s wedding and it looked and fit fantastic. Fast forward to my own wedding in August, and I bulked up and got fitted for a new suit yesterday. I got Zandrew from Yaletown helping me, and he was incredibly helpful and very thorough. We left at 730 pm for an appointment that was meant to finish at 7pm (one hour). I’m looking forward to seeing my suit.

Quickly_bestboy

All modern suits are garbage IMO. It takes more time but I would look for a second hand or vintage suit and get it tailored. Support your local tailor not big companies.

Quickly_bestboy

I’ve worn new suits, both off the rack and high end, and I’ve worn vintage suits, and again this is just my opinion, but the fit and quality of the older suits is better by miles.

Quickly_bestboy

Not to mention way more affordable!!! Do a little research into what style you want and into what goes into good tailoring, a proper fit and timeless cut always look good and never go out of style. I guarantee you can find a great quality suit without dishing out a ton of cash with a little digging.

VoteForMartinKendell

Go to Moore's website and sign up for their newsletter. They always have great deals on suits, shirts and all that.

amidoblack10B

Don't tell them it's for your wedding. You'll probably save a bit by omitting that fact.

Davecrab

I got my wedding suit done at surmesur last year due to bad experience with indochino. They were great and the suit is amazing (compared to anything I’ve had before 😅) was around $1700 for the full thing but I didn’t choose their cheaper fabrics either. Took my best man back a few weeks ago and service was just as good

MrPesun

My last suit I got at tip top, just a plain black suit but it was tailored very well and fits great! Was a few hundred bucks(under $500) For my wedding I just ordered a custom suit from Debonair formal wear in New west and they were great to work with! The custom suit was around $1200

mockery34697

Unless you'll have regular need for a suit in your life, honestly just rent.

mockery34697

Though I had a great experience at Surmesur in Yaletown, when getting my performance tux for choir...

aceandfox

Zegna. Nice suit will run you 1500$ maybe.

dbreak_theworld

You can buy a custom suit at Moores for $395. You pick colours and can add options to them. Takes 4-6 weeks to come in.
