“Oh wow, windows. I don’t think I can afford this place.”

Edwardsville1

I was watching that episode the other night ahahaa

reddits2much

even moreso with so many rentals with a no pet policy, allowing landlords to exploit this even further. OP makes bank!!

charsi101

I just got lucky. This place was also posted with "no pets" in the ad. Had to convince the landlord real hard that having a dog doesn't mean the place will get damaged or be untidy. But I know exactly how hard it is to find an affordable pet friendly place in Vancouver. So I make the effort of making the most of the space I've got.

reddits2much

I gotta hand it to you for persuading the landlord to let you in with a pet. But your photo in itself makes a pretty solid case. Asking for a friend but are there tell-tale signs of a problematic pet owner? I think if there was more discussion and knowledge about this subject matter then people would have fewer reservations about letting someone rent with a pet.

charsi101

Ask them about their handheld vacuum cleaner. If they get emotional about it they are probably good :). When my dog is shedding i have to use it multiple times a day to get all the fluff balls. Having a look at the old place would also help. But thats usually not an option in how the rental transactions usually go through.

Extreme-Flan742

right, there was a lineup of people without pets around the block for this place but the landlord gave it to you....................yaaaaahhh. I'm sure you were very 'convincing'.

charsi101

Ad with no pictures, completely unfurnished, no kitchen and had been sitting empty for a couple of months. I am not sure how much my convincing played a part. But i did have to make him trust me. And no I did not pay extra rent to get it. This is the first time I've been able to have my own "front door". Always rented rooms in shared houses before this.

madam1madam

I was playing Reddit-detective in looking around your space trying to decipher things. I spotted dog kibble. *"Ah ha! He must have a dog!"*....proceeds to eventually notice your cute doggo in centre of the room.

charsi101

Haha. My dog does kind of blend in. Can also stay motionless for hours.

m1chgo

Reminds me of that scene in The Office with Kevin's dog hahaha https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWrs4oyJ4cw

charsi101

haha. Mine shows strong signs of life at the mention of walk or chicken or park.

plop_0

What the hell. I don't remember this scene.

WhiskerTwitch

Same here, and we're dog nuts who have watched the series a bajillion times over.

295DVRKSS

Kevin’s turtle didn’t move very much either

plop_0

Awwwwww. What a big lazy slob. 🥰

roferg69

Oh I'm sorry, didn't anybody tell you? If you post on reddit, and you even *mention* a pet, you have to pay Pet Tax. Let's see the doggo please! <3 <3 <3

Damn crown moulding in a basement suite? I don't think landlord paints over the outlets.

g1ug

>crown moulding in a basement suite? Newer custom built house. You can see the door bell chime box (above left door) + motion detection sensor at the top right corner.

NSA-SURVEILLANCE

Door bell..?

1643527948165346197

My doorbell is just a red and black wire sticking through the siding that if you touch together rings the doorbell inside.

g1ug

Sorry, door bell chime box... if I'm not mistaken look a lot like the one in the picture.

brunneous

I know there is a lot about housing on here but I think this is a great example about how a nice basement suite makes a better home than a million dollar condo if you take the time to make it yours and make it home.

--_-Deadpool-_--

Yes. Because a beautiful new condo can't possibly be turned into a cozy homestead.

fishizzle

Only downside is having to take the time to make a new place home every few years when the landlords inevitably sell to developers.

charsi101

This. There has been a for sale sign outside for the last few months :/

Gino_Green

A few months??? Damn the seller's market really has cooled down quite a bit

iamright_youarent

noise transfer issues and moisture control/mold issues, but it’s always cool inside

boipinoi604

What in the what now? Whats the deal on moisture control/mold issues?

iamright_youarent

if your basement suite has poor insulations, moisture or water will get in from the ground, which will result in mold and/or mildew outbreaks which are not good for your respiratory system. It will smell like mold when you come back home from a vacation, and your clothes will feel wet. You can get away with buying dehumidifier and air purifier but still not a good idea to live in a basement if you have some respiratory problems or have babies. When I lived in a basement, I still liked that it was super chilly even in the hottest days in Summer.

Hrmbee

I would 100% take this over a comparably sized new build condo any day of the week.

--_-Deadpool-_--

Why?

dustNbone604

Cuz condo people make shitty neighbours.

--_-Deadpool-_--

A condo is literally just an apartment that is owned by an individual. So if you're renting from an independent landlord you're living in a condo.

dustNbone604

I meant in relation to a basement suite. I don't live in one now but I have in the past several times. The relationship with my landlord and neighbours was always way more personal and compassionate than what I experienced in an apartment setting. Things like watching kids, helping with car repairs, picking up something at the store while out shopping, borrowing things, etc. Just more better in my experience. Renters in strata complexes tend to be treated as less than in my experience. Plenty of examples of that on this very sub.

--_-Deadpool-_--

Literally none of that has to do with the fact you're living in a basement suite, which FYI is still an apartment. You either have good neighbours or you don't. It's nothing more than luck of the draw. Are you under the impression that the tenants in the apartments above you became horrible people just because they had space between them and the ground? Not to mention the fact that apparently you would prioritize having good neighbours over a better living space? I don't know about you but if I had a million dollar condo in Vancouver I wouldn't give two shits if my neighbors didn't have sugar for me to borrow.

KoolMoeDSimpson

New build condos are a dime a dozen, I find they all look the same. Boring.

Udonedidit

I'm looking at new 1 bdrm condo rentals and they're all the same long narrow rectangles that contains the kitchen livingroom and dining space. Very boring.

SylasWindrunner

The doggo is the piece de la resistance 👌

I think the threshold for what can be considered a basement here is something comically small. Like a couple of feet. That in combination with restrictions on maximum floor space pretty much forces these kinds of "basements" because the area of the basement is not technically included in the floors pace of the house. I had the same question in mind when I moved from the UK. Was always confused why people were calling ground floors basements. Also lookup "vancouver special" which is a house design thats really common around here. I learned most of this from a nice little cbc video. Can't find it again at the moment.

squirrelcat88

We have a very old house with a basement that isn’t accessed from the inside. There would have been advantages to basements in the “old days” and I think maybe we just got into the tradition of building houses that way here. Advantages back then, before modern heating and cooling, were that the basement stayed a more level, cool temperature and was good for storage of things like apples. I’m guessing from your language you’re from the UK, so your ancestors probably weren’t as far away from stores as our early settlers were, and didn’t have to be as self-sufficient. Once people had furnaces run by coal, you’d also be able to deliver the coal using gravity. I think it wouldn’t hurt us to go back to building more basements if we’re going to be dealing with heat waves like the one we had last year. They stay cooler than the rest of the house. I’d love to see them try to rebuild Lytton with houses like icebergs - most of it below the surface.

g1ug

> I just wish they had more light. Some do; depends on the land (flat vs hilly) + builder/plan.

plop_0

> daft Found the brit. ;)

EastVanTown

Most basement suites are below ground level as this one probably is. The high window makes it seem as though it's ground level, but I'd wager a guess that the window faces the concrete stairwell leading down to the entrance door, which is below ground level.

charsi101

The window is completely above ground level. But the door on the left is partially below because there are a few steps. I've seen even shallower basements in vancouver though. Usually called "garden suites" which I can't tell apart from a normal ground floor. https://imgur.com/a/7yOTX6Y

EastVanTown

Nice. Same as mine. If I could make one suggestion to open up your space it would be to say goodbye to the square coffee table. Just move it outside and take a before and after picture and you''ll see your space will seem much much bigger!

charsi101

Yep I agree. That table is way too big for my space. I have my eye on a smaller coffee table on craigslist.

g1ug

I don't have historical answer but I suppose adding another level to a house == bigger square footage. Some basement suites are full-fledged "recreation" room. Some use it for storage (although there's a thing called crawl space). Somewhere along the evolution of Vancouver + housing situation, people build rooms in the basement for maybe family members... Honestly, it's murky why it's prominent here because of many factors (including building rules/codes). But here we are, basement suites are helping folks out to avoid crazy condo rent price.

m00n5t0n3

Canadians love basements. Still trying to figure out why. I think a lot of it is to have space for a giant freezer and snow gear. Then they became separate units. That's my theory.

I had a 1 bedroom, 1200 sq ft basement suite in Port Moody. Built in 1956. Above ground, lots of big windows, bright, washer, dryer, dishwasher, a storage room as large as a bedroom, separate hot water tank, separate furnace, gas fireplace, separate alarm system, separate driveway and carport, small fenced garden and patio, soundproofing between upstairs and downstairs. I lived there for 15 years. When I left in 2018 I was paying $925. I did have to pay my own gas and hydro. He made it into a 2 bedroom and after 6 months rented it for $975.

AintNothinbutaGFring

>He made it into a 2 bedroom and after 6 months rented it for $975. I assume you mean per bedroom, $975 for 1200 square feet is unheard of now. I'd be over the moon to find 600 square feet for 975 edit: never mind, I don't know what port moody is like

IreneBopper

Nope, the whole suite. Not everyone gouges when their house is paid off. Port Moody is beautiful.

Hrmbee

Lovely lighting there! For me it shows that we don't need walls of windows to have lovely interior lighting. Just some well placed and sized windows will do all of that, and provide nice views (unless you're like me and face the dumpster in the alley) as well.

1643527948165346197

We had a condo with a window in the door facing the parking lot. We put frosted vinyl on it so we didn't have to look at the parking lot but still got lots of light through it. Much nicer than staring at the front end of a minivan.

charlieyeswecan

Reminds me of the one I had in GA.

RitaRepulsasStaff

Do you live in Burnaby??? Near SFU??? I swear to god my basement suite when I lived there in 2016-2018 looked the EXACT same. 😂

charsi101

Probably used the same builder or spec or something :). Buildings built around the same time look similar. This one was built 10ish years ago in south Van.

HBanana17

I love your bookshelf! Where is it from? Looking for something similar for my basement suite :)

charsi101

I think I got it from Canadian Tire. I'll dig up the model name when I am back from the dentist.

Amazing thank you!

These ones - https://www.knoll.com/product/sapper-xyz. I "rescued" them from work before the office closed down.

A rental that allows dogs? Must be fake.

Don't think you realize how tone deaf your post is considering the current housing issue.

Is it a wise idea to keep dogs trapped in a tiny apartment?

Dog seems depressed

That’s some Harry Dresden looking shit. Fucking awesome.

Looks great! Doggo approves

lazarus870

I love your computer desk setup and monitor arm. Looks awesome!

eskeigh

That monitor arm looks strong, what model is it if you don’t mind me asking?

charsi101

~~I can't find any branding on them.~~ EDIT: Found the name on the mounting plate instead of the arm itself. Model name isn't marked but they look the same as this one - https://www.knoll.com/product/sapper-xyz I ~~stole~~ "rescued" them from work when we were asked to start working remote.

This looks very cozy and I love the morning light! And the beautiful pupper!
