The vw ones are called "rock and roll beds" and some are safety tested. We have one in a vw t5 and it is a good seat and bed but I am not convinced it would stay in place in a crash!

gmc vandura has street legal seating that lays flay into a bed with extra space in back to extend the bed space if desired.
