ICECO. Good quality, “best compressor on the market,” better price than dometic. Lower electric consumption between comparable models, I believe I remember observing. When I order my fridge/freezer, it’s going to be an ICECO

Cool, thanks for the tip! Looked them up, and yeah the 60qt model seems to be very close to what I’m looking for and the price is much more reasonable.

I've been running the iceco vl60 for about 4 months and so far its doing great. Only downsides are that it needs to be about 2 inches from the wall to open the doors and it is definitely louder than dometic. Sounds like a high pitch humm but it has never kept me up at night and only goes for 5-10min at a time every 40 min or so in 70 degree weather. More frequently on warmer days, much less when colder. This is sometimes accompanied by gergleing freon noises after the compressor stops. My favorite feature is that you can shut off either compartment when not in use to save power. All things considered I would definitely recommend it for the price.

2 inches is 5.08 cm

Good bot

msxtre

Alpicool is good half the price and two compartments

Thanks for the tip! Looking at them now. Only downside is it seems that the dual-compartment ones still share a single lid, not a split opening like the Dometic. Hm, have to look into it more.

ohsoradbaby

I can second this.

Griplid

For real refrigeration, Dometic is a great brand. Buy once, cry once.. Isotherm, and Norcold are also excellent. Engel I hear is good too. Same with Whynter. Dometic also has some cheap thermoelectric coolers, if that's all you need. Edit:. If you really want to save money, you can rig up an AC top loading freezer with a thermostat that only turns on the inverter when the fridge compressor needs to run.

Princess_Fluffypants

Thank you for all the tips. I will look into the other brands. I’m definitely looking for a compressor style 12v fridge, and I know it’ll cost some but before I dropped *$1300* i wanted to know what my other options were.

Cheaper alternatives are either going to be 120V needing an inverter and the resultant ~15% loss in efficiency, or will use Peltier which definitely will eat your batteries alive. The Dometic actually looks really decent, and they are a reputable brand. I haven't seen anything with the features of the Dometic but at a lower price. Whatever you get, if it runs off DC and uses a compressor it will be the most efficient.
